I love Katsura's art, hoping for a dark story but it's probably going to be a shounen... can't expect Toriyama to have anything too seinen

Dragon Ball's writing is very inconsistent, either ranging from absolutely brilliant (the Freeza arc) to mediocre or just downright bad (the Boo arc). Asspulls, retcons, plot holes, contradictions, non-foreshadowed shifts in protagonists, over-usage of tropes, introducing new characters over fleshing out older characters, out of character moments and much more are not new to Dragon Ball. Which is to be expected from such a long series, and even if it works for Shounen and even if worked for its time, it still doesn't excuse bad writing.

DB is good but to me I was never a huge fan of it. I personally liked Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin more. To me bringing back dead characters is very cheapening. However what DB is so good is the creativity and really first great battle fantasy shounen and the father of the battle shounen with new concepts like the usage of gravity training, hyperbolic time chamber and power ups with different power levels. And also DB had Goku who is a very awesome character and ideal hero type of character that people like. Its the exact same reason people like characters such as Luffy and Naruto.

Yeah I don't know why people complain so much about the plot in DBZ. It's not groundbreaking but each arc was pretty exciting. I still think the Android/Cell Saga is one of the greatest Shonen arcs ever written. It was exciting from beginning to end.

His writing is only effective for young kids (which it should be since it's a shonen) but compared to other things in terms of writing it's not that good.

His writing is a lot better than some of the Shonen that have come after. Just because the manga is aimed at young adults/kids doesn't mean it can't be enjoyed by an older audience. Not everything has to be '2deep4me' to be considered 'good writing.'

Say what you will about Toriyama but Dragon Ball is one of the few mangas that is universally known around the world. You can go to pretty much any country and find someone that at least recognizes some of the characters. The fact that he managed to write something that could appeal not only to a Japanese audience but the world says quite a bit at how 'effective' his writing is. Even if it wasn't intentional, he created one of the most beloved universes in fiction.

Who's trying to see Toriyama plot something that's not DBZ? Let him do the art and someone else handle plotting.

i bet it will be another short manga series again

I feel like Toriyama's story-telling is very good for its time. Even now, I still think that Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z (the series still has its fair share of flaws) hold up today but when he lost his motivation for drawing during the Buu saga, I would agree with you; his story went downhill. That is just my opinion, and I may be a bit biased since I love Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z.

I'd prefer if it were Toriyama's art and Katsura handled the story. Toriyama has never been good at story-telling.
