Nagoya TV pointed out an inappropriate expression in the episode 8 of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 2 aired on May 27th. They probably meant one of Kyon's lines "(The park is a) Mecca of odd fellows". The line was left uncensored to respect the original work.

Translation of the annotation: This work contains an inappropriate expression, but we aired as it is to respect the original work.

And to those who think that it's only the Muslims who react this way don't know much. Anyone else notice Viz's altering of Greed's "crucifixion" scene in the FMA manga? We take plenty of offense to Japanese media too.

That drives me crazy. Crucifixion was not invented just for Christ, it was a common form of punishment back in the day. The way some Christians overreact any time there is a cross in anything is just fucking ridiculous.

I can't believe I missed this thread until now. This is absolutely hilarious. Its just people getting offended for no reason again.

ROTFL
In polish phrase "mekka of sth/sb" is quite popular - attractive place for people because of sth, like "Paris is a mekka for painters".
As to Jews/Christians. Well, Poland is mostly Catholic place, unfotrunately we have quite a bunch of crazy "cathols", some of them were in Parlament (some are still). Their great idea was to set up Jesus as the King of Poland (to be honest, Virgin Mary is the Queen of Poland since XVII century, but that's another topic, Virgin Mary movement in Poland is very strong, irrelevant in this discussion). What is more, many artist and "artists" make instalations or paintings with Christ or Mary in some crazy poses and situations. "Cathol's" reaction is very fast - public condemnation and sometimes denunciation to prosecutor...
Similar situation was when ex-communist spokesman Urban in his newspaper had published an article in which in some gross words suggested that pope John Paul II should resign because of his age, sickness and inability to be a head of the church. Epilogu of that article was in court...

Wow, bad on their part, but come on.... Racism and prejudice is huge in media. Racism against African American people is obviously unacceptable a bit, but people lash out at different kinds of people and different races because of that. Those weird catholics, those crazy Indian people, those stupid Scandinavians, those rich Jewish people. (No offense to anyone in that group). That racist crap is even on the Disney channel, with those "weird" foreigners. Why? People still think it's funny. Is it right? No. Is there something we can do about it? Probably not. But, in terms of Japan and that racist comment, they probably didn't realize the big mistake they made. Japan is a highly xenophobic country. Now they'll learn what they did wrong. It's a learning experience.

Oh woe is me! I am politically incorrect! This is the end! Shoot me!

You people can just take your douchebaggy phrases and shove it in, hell you could just say 'religiously offending phrases' instead of a douchebaggy 'politically incorrect'. Wtf it's just a word.

And people who say they should search Mecca up first, then do you mean to say that you tell them to search up EVERY fancy word they come up with? Hell the least they'll do is probably go get a dictionary and look it up.

Also, F the over-sensitive people of religion, I mean seriously, of course I don't hate my religion but some people in it are so close-minded. Being a Christian and all. Anyways some people can't even tolerate name-calling, games like Devil May Cry (Oh boo hoo, DEVILS, ;_;) and stuff like that and now THIS. These things are some of the things that make people view religion in a negative manner. Facepalm.

Look what Christians and Jews did, they religions bashed even worse than Islam but I never see they make demonstrations about it.

hahahahaha, that's a good one

If you'd actually pay attention, just last year Christians in Hyderabad went apeshit over a business owner who posted a picture of Jesus holding a beer and cigarette. Then there is this perpetual shitfest that some Catholics are throwing over people stealing the Eucharist (a piece of bread), since they think it trans-substantiates into the literal body of Christ. Of course these are only two examples, but the media tends to--rather conveniently--forget to mention or else never bring up again instances of Christians bitching about blasphemy.

Why is it that any little thing to do with Muslims is considered offense but no one gives a f**k about other religions?

I'm a Pagan and I acknowledge the double standard as well.

Also, insulting religion is a beautiful thing. If people think it shouldn't be done, all the more reason to do it. And to me someone saying something bad about me being a Pagan is something I'm well expecant of, after all, it includes Shinto, and if I had a dollar for everytime I've been called a weeaboo, well...

What I'm saying, is that I enjoy Black Metal with constant blasphemy against Abrahamic religion in general. But I don't think that they can't do the same to me. I'm not some fascist church burner(they're one of my favorite things about Christianity). And I think they can do the same to me. For God's sake hypersensitivity about religion is lame. Oh goodness, did I offend someone for saying God's sake?

As an anime watcher, who just so happens to be studying to be an Islamic Scholar,
All I have to say this thread is: HA.

Haruhi said she wants to celebrate the prophet's(PBUH) birthday in the novel so its all goood~.

(wonders when 'mecca of' ever became offensive, we don't even spell it like that anymore :P)

Mecca of oddballs
I don't quite get it, no native speaker.

Can you compare it to Akiba. 'Akiba of appliance nerds' or 'Akiba of otakus' which one sounds more like Mecca of odd fellow? Does it sounds negative?

Haruhi already offended a lot of people when the show revealed her to be "God". Not everyone believes in the existence of God, and for the ones who do, most of them do not consider God to be some rambunctious anime schoolgirl.

Haruhi is an anime full of religious insults indeed.
i don't really know what to say to this, so i'm just going to go lkdsjjjjjjaferu8t4394.

It was sarcasm. I love the series; I just think people overreact to everything nowadays.
