Synopsis

Yating was working in a recording company until she was fired by her boss (a famous movie actress with a spoiled temperament). Discouraged and jobless, Yating decided to work in a pub where a famous group called "Gangster" regularly played. Along the way, she gets to meet this guy who has the most divine voice. Yating's luck then began to change when her uncle decides to retire and set up his own record company. He asks her to join in his ambition to create the most famous rock group in Taiwan. This is the story of how Yating, being the new manager, tried to create the ultimate rock band!

Since this story is completed in translations now, I wanted to write a review since it is one of the manhuas I enjoy the most.
It is complete at 14 volumes so it is a mid length manga - not too long to drag on and not too short to be fullfilling.
Actually, I started reading this a few years ago from reading the author's Nicky Lee's other work "The One". If you are a fan of that series, please consider reading her other stories such as Youth Gone Wild and Paradise City ( an earlier work ... ) and I think you will enjoy them.
Or, If you like stories like "Skip Beat" where there is a person working on their career with and there is a blend of humor, romance and serious stuff give it a try too. It is also a story about the work of celebrities.

The story is about a young woman agent who loses a music contract of a famous singer and instead of giving up, decides to create a top band that will have the type of sound and music she likes, namely a metal rock band.
So she goes out to search for the best guitarist, bass etc. Then she recruits a guy she met by accident to be the singer. Each guy has a distinct personality and each of the characters is given their own "screen time" over the course of the story, although it does concentrate more on a couple of the characters.

The guys also have separate romance stories incorporated into the main story. So instead of this being one romance it is three at least.
Instead of it being one story it is the story of each of it's members and how they come together to work together.
The romance of the main two characters, the agent and the lead singer is the "main" one but it develops slowly. Each romance is distinct and has a different tone because the guys and girls all have distinct personalities so each relationship has a very different tone, so it makes it a lot of fun. The guys sometimes being jerks and the girls talking about them together behind the scenes amongst themselves while the guys are practicing is so real.

I think this manga does the best job of covering how a real band works from any other music mangas I have read. You will see the behind the scenes practices, the conflicts between the egos of the band members, the coming together of different people to make the sound, the way that contracts and the music business works behind the scenes.

If you have read The One and how it goes behind the scenes in modeling you will understand that this does the same sort of thing for the music world.

The story and band draw inspiration from real world bands like Guns N Roses, SkidRow and Metallica. You can find lyrics and references to real bands scattered throughout the story.

Overall I give this one a 9 although it is one of my very favorite mangas to read, it is not at the masterpiece level of say Death Note but in many ways it is MORE enjoyable than some "masterpieces".

The author clearly loves music and good looking guys and that comes through in her story. She has a lot of fun with the story and injects humor and sometimes draws them being silly like chibies to show that. That doesn't make it less of a masterpiece, I think it's great that at sometimes this story is silly and other times it's very serious. The art is good, the guys are hot, the characters grow and change and develop, so does the way the band works. If you read Skip Beat you will notice some similarities in the way they are sometimes hot and sometimes chibies.

If you like mature shoujo or josei or you love music please give this manhua a read and please read a few chapters before you decide you don't like it because the story evolves along with the characters. My husband is in the music industry / a musician so I have seen a lot of these things behind the scene in the real world.
Obviously I am a fan of this story!

For my personal opinion, this was a really enjoyable manhua; I had fun reading it.
It starts out kinda slow and it shoots off into the air as it progresses. The story has a significant plot to it. It can show how starting a dream doesn't go on smoothly to the top. That there will be a lot of roadblocks and bumpy roads to the finish line. Falling in love won't be easy either. This manhua has slice of life, humor, and romance all jumbled up together to make one great story. Sometimes there will be cliffhangers that leave you hanging until the next volume.

Mixed Feelings

Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to read Youth Gone Wild after The One, since YGW is one of Nicky Lee's earlier works and it's easy to find flaws especially if you compare it with The One. But here we go.

Story
In terms of story, YGW is catchy if you enjoy romantic stories that involve music and a lot of drama. I was really impressed with Nana and I thought I've just discovered something similar, but it wasn't the case. The story is simple and really convenient almost all the time. "I want to be the manager of a band". Done! "Do you wanna be ... a part of this band?" Done. "Each member of the band needs a romantic interest no matter what!" Done. But what about the story itself? There was no progress, in my opinion. Maybe some background progress, but that's actually cheap, because the focus shifts way too easily from romance to music and it's hard to keep track of what really matters in this manga. The only saving grace is that the story, however shallow it might be, stays entertaining and creative until the very end, despite all those cliches involved.

Art
Let's just say it was good, although it might be a stretch. Many panels at times, overflowing with text and distorted faces that it's hard to keep up with who's who. But it really does compensates with the main design of the characters, their unique style which reminded me of popular bands from the 80s.

Characters
The characters suffer from lack of development, no matter how hard the author tries to make them relatable or justify their actions. The protagonist YaTing is bland, has no actual depth apart from being the manager of the band and Wang Xiang's love interest. And she stays the same until the very end, this is the problem. She's funny in her antics with Wang Xiang, but that's all. Same for Wang Xiang, whose reasons to be a musician are shallow and his development feels forced. As for the other characters who often shadow the two above mentioned, they are extremes of some other cliches and it simply doesn't work. Also, the treatment of women is a little bit frustrating. Only alpha males and women who can trust and forgive everything, as if they don't have a personality of their own. But then again, the manhwa is funny at times and their silliness might be overlooked if you wanna see what's next.

Enjoyment
As I've already said, YGW is enjoyable only because it is about music as well and because it has a fast pace and good jokes from time to time. Apart from this, it's questionable whether it's worth wasting time with it or not.
