THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
I'll admit I'm not upset that they Kamogawa and Nekota arc was omitted, I think it deserves it's own OAV or TV special with Nishimura's direction and Imahori's compositions. But I enjoyed the introduction of Itagaki's family, I had a hard time making out the credits who plays who, but I thought the seiyuu selection was dead on. I was also surprised they got into Itagaki's come back that quickly as well.

I was expecting they were going to do the "I'm going to take a potato chip and eait it" animation with Takamura's victory speech like they did with Hawk's conquest speech at the press conference, but I was ok with it.

Looks loike in the next episode, Miyata will confront Ippo on why they are not fighting, but kind of weird they are making it the last episode, especially when that scene easily and effectively sets up his fight with Sean Sherk......er I mean Shimabukuro. I'm guessing this season finale will set up the next season which should be titled either Third Strike or Championship Edition.

Another poorly done episode, i was almost afraid they where going to cut out the taka v itagaki dad dick-off, but glad they never so points for that! However the pacing in this episode and ammount of material which was cut out was beyond bad, it just jumped around so much from one thing to the next and was just poorly done overall.

I am however glad that this director and composer didn't get their hands on kamogawa and neko backstory arc, can't imagine how badly they would have tarnished it, i hope to god that gets released as an OVA under as ParaParaJMo said the direction of nishimura and the composing of imahori. If however kamogawa and neko never sees the light of day in anime form, then this is one of the worst decisions i have came across.

It seems going off the preview that they have jumped all the way to pre-shima-most tounge twisting name ever, i guess this is what new challenger refers to.

Overall was going to score this episode 2/5, but the itagaki dinner and dick-off which surprisingly was handled well IMO, saved it to 3/5.

I laughed a fair bit this episode, it served as a good comedy interlude. The dick-off was a big winner with me. I was surprised at the way they skipped over the Kamogawa backstory, but I'm glad they did. Better leave it for an OVA for all the obvious reasons.

Seems from the episode trailer that this season is going to leave off at a weird point.

well, koyama rikiya did say they are going to make some new episodes in the future. but the trailer does feel awkward where it's going to end. i wonder if kamogawa is going to give ippo that he's a cheese champion speech

I was fine with most things after Takamura's victory speech, and at least the series hasn't lost touch with the comedic side of things...

I did think that the transition to Itagaki's fight and the dinner should have been done better, or that a transition should at least exist, maybe sandwiched in between the statue conversation. Otherwise I liked it.

I do have one major complaint though, shouldn't the championship be delicious?
It's as if they decided to systematically reduce the epicness of Takamura v. Hawk.

I hadn't gotten that far in the manga yet so the going home to have dinner, and bad jokes, were all new to me, and completely out of place. I wanted the background story. At the very least I wanted Ippo to go get Aoki. He just magically showed up in the second half of the episode. Completely out of place.

Also, the subs sucked so I have to wait until someone good does it, and then force myself to watch this again. Ugh.

^^ This is why this was out of place. And yeah, wait for the good subs, the puns need to be explained/shown.

Good comic relief after all these dramatic episodes. I liked it a lot, even if the humour was intentionnally, well... not funny. That's a quality in itself I guess. And we get to know more about Itagaki, one of the most interesting characters of the season, so that's good. Next, Miyata.

In every age, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same.

Nice and funny episode, which is a quarter of the reason why I love this series. The Itagaki family was great being all pun-o-licious and all. And now I know that man to man challenges made on the street are to be conducted while firmly grasping one's genitalia.

I also would like to see the kamogawa/nekota arc, but like someone said, a stand alone OVA would be better. i also would have liked to see ippo fight more....i feel like for a new season, they picked a weak arc. i mean, yes, it was the arc that takamura take world belt but, isnt the show about ippo? anyway, i liked it but only cause i like anything ippo. hopefully next is better. his next fight in manga should be good.

^^ I thought that was why they named it new challenger? Anyway it couldn't be helped, because ippo didn't have a lot of fights this time.

Maybe because the show has only 2 episodes and it wouldn´t be enough for this arc? There is also the chance that the start the new series with this arc.

Well, I was too aghast at the way Itagaki's dad looked to laugh at anything, but honestly...this wasn't nearly as bad as other episodes, so it was just ok for me. I just don't see the point in talking about Itagaki and the Rookie tournament on the penultimate episode. I think they should have just kept it about Takamura.

lmao this is why Hajime no Ippo is one of my fav shows. The comedy is awesome.

Takamura copying Hawk with the sperm speech hahaaaa

Then Itagaki's dad and him hahaha

Oh and his classic line

My Punch is dynamite and Aoki shitting himself loool
Do you know of ‘The Magnificent Steiner’ ? The main character was normally a weak, sickly man. When he was in an emergency, someone would come and help him. A secret friend. But, the main character never realised...... that his secret friend....Was himself.

It's not that Takamura copies Hawk, it's just that Takamura is just a "Japanese" version of him. It was already discussed earlier in the series if the fight took place in America, Takamura would tell people he came just to get himself some blondes.

Takamura had to be Takamura and wrecked his mic performance! haha :-)) LOL at the statue also.. I'm afraid Takamura might be a Bryan Hawk in the making haha
The Itagaki family scene was kinda awkward.. and broke the mood for me.. I agree with Aoki in saying "This is so stupid, I want to cry." LOL :-))

You know a lot of people seem to bitch about how they cut out pieces from the manga, which does have relevance, but almost NO context to the episode itself in terms of making it awkward or choppy, which is pretty stupid of people.

The house visit was a bit awkward and unfunny, but it was obvious that's what they were going for, so it should be commended for it. Overall, another good episode.

Itagaki's family are very punny, seeing what I did there? But in all seriousness, this was an ok episode, that post-match speech that Takamura gave was vulgar, saying that he'll give all his sperm to every women in Japan xD
But that scene when Takamura had a pun challenge with Itagaki's dad was hilarious, especially when they both grabbed their groins, this was a pretty funny episode, and now there's one more left for this season, judging from the preview, it looks like an episode that'll build up to a fight.
