Maybe she is trying to wash off his dirt she feels after a visit to the world of living. A clothing - because the rate of this anime can not without it.

I believe its for purification purposes.

In Shintoism, there is a ritual called Misogi where one purifies themselves by letting water fall on themselves. This is what we usually see in anime with the guy meditating under the waterfall. Rather than doing this naked, men wear loincloths and women wear kimono. It would make sense also that the robe is white, since white is a 'pure' color.

Water purification is actually pretty common in lots of cultures: Baptism in Christianity, types of ritual washing in Judaism, people washing before prayer in the Islamic culture, and the list goes on.
