I am a native Japanese (which does not mean I am always right- Japanese students can score bad marks on Japanese Language tests).

As you know, Azumanga Daio's "Daio" is taken from Dengeki Daio. It seems to add a funny hyperbole by claiming the manga to be a "Great King" when it's essentially a slice of life manga.

"Dayo" and "Daioh" are probably not related, as in Japanese the two can't be conflated. Daioh is pronounced as Dai-oh (die-o) with a distinct separation in between.

Btw I like Azumaga - it's a classic manga. I also like Nichijou but Azumanga deserves to be the original classic which started the genre.
