Is there any difference between plotwise between the two? Or are they generally the same thing?

There are a few differences between them, but all in all, the anime follows the light novels pretty closely. There are a few scenes and events that are moved around in the anime and the novels have a few minor arcs and characters that weren't in the anime, but weren't too significant to the overall story. The novels do however go into far more detail about certain things and a few of the "missing" arcs do expand on certain characters or events. (for example, the anime skipped the part about Kyousuke's past and why he is the way he is now). I loved the anime and though it's pretty faithful to the novels, I highly recommend reading the novels as it helps understand the story and characters.
