THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
So, Miyata wins in the first 5 or so minutes, and then we waste the rest of the episode on a terribly written post-bout encounter between the Austrailian and Ichiro. Then we are treated to long flashbacks of fights that happened in the first series just to fill the time. Nothing else to say really.

BUT........ we found out about Ippo and the world champ sparring match wouldn't that be considered something good...
Never say you love,If you dont really care Never talk about feelings,That aren't even there
Never hold my hand,If your gonna break my heart Never say your going too,If you dont plan to start
Never look into my eyes,If all you'll tell are lie Never say,If you really meant good bye
If you really meant forever then say you'll try Never say forever because forever makes me cry

I was really impressed with this episode, especially by their incorporation of fitting music. Maybe this season will surpass season 1 in terms of enjoyment.

Still, I'm looking forward to it. Despite it being a "sparring match," you know Ippo is going to go all out. Should be a good test of his ability. Makes me want to go and read the manga.

to be honest i was very dissapointed by this ep...and the music in my opinion simply didnt belong here...maybe in the pirates of the caribbean but not hajime no ippo. The flashback was just a real annyance (already a flashback that took up the rest of the Run time...!) w/e ITS still HAJIME NO IPPO

I'm with the general consensus on this one - felt like 80% of this episode was wasted space.

I'm looking forward to seeing Date fight, though. He was my favorite character from the first season.

Unnecessary with the flashback, but I still enjoyed it.

The music in the start felt like a disney movie or a pirates of the caribbeans movie:-/

not every minute has to be filled with action, if you remember last season, there was even more dialogue and build up, this season is extremely fast paced imo.

I thought the eppy was kinda boring with the flashbacks.

What's with the season only having 25 episodes? That sucks. =/

Entertaining episode...but the flashback was really unneeded.

Side-Note: When was New Challenger confirmed to be 25 episodes long?

Well I just think that they thought it was necessary to add the flash backs as a reminder to the fans who might have forgotten what happend in the first season, the last anime was made in 2002 so I dont see what the problem is with only 15 minutes of flashbacks, the thing is it wasn't as bad as most of the other animes that take a whole episode of just flashback's, anyways its gonna be awesome seeing how ippo fare's against the mexican champ, and I still think ichiro won by a cheap shot.

If this series is only 25 episodes, then that's fucking bullshit. That's hoping if Nishimura comes back after Trigun and he directs again.

Anyway, I suppose if you don't have any access to the previous episodes, I guess the flashback does help. But I don't think it was necessary. Especially in the manga when:

Yeah, 25 episodes is bullshit. The first is 76, yet we anticipate the continuation only to have it be 25 episodes? Not cool.

This episode was alright. It did what it was supposed to do. I haven't read the Manga in a long time, so I can't recall exactly how this part went down. Anyway, I can't wait for the Date vs Ricardo match. I know that one was awesome.

This episode was a bit slow and blank (I mean, what the hell with the recaps?) and I'm not too impressed by this second season overall. Interesting thing that Ippo will be facing the world champ, even only for practice.

Pirates of the Caribbean music has no place in this anime. And what's with the animation? It looks worse than the original, despite having 8 years worth of more advanced animation technology. I hope it gets better, so I can get back to enjoying what should be a great show.

Got to disagree with you on the scene after the fight. Ichiro flashing back to his talks with Ippo and then underplaying it with the word "stubbornness" instead of going on a long spiel about his past seems like good writing to me. The flashback to the fight between Ippo and Date was unnecessary though. Also, the manager for Ichiro's opponent seemed way to generically evil to me.

I think Ippo sh*t himself when he heard who he'd be fighting next. I would too. The man has a record of 62-0 w/ 58 KO's. THAT'S INSANE! I'm loving this show right now. It's really kicked it up a notch even from the outstanding finale of the first series.

Oh, & congrats to Miyata for being a champ himself. Looks like the stage is perfectly set for Ippo to climb his way onto the world stage, once he's defended his belt a few times of course.

Woah! Congrats to Miyata! Looks like everyone is becoming a champion! hehe I'm guessing having the OPBF title is a step higher then the Japanese title.. Miyata actually took I think the longer and harder path to surpass Ippo..
Also, after beating the 2nd rank in the world.. looks like Takamura might get a title shot soon!!
LOL @ at Ippo not noticing who the World Champ wants to spar.. but 62 wins is monstrous!

i wish they showed all of takamura's fights in depth, as well as explaining what the fuck he's actually doing. i have no idea what world league he's challenging, let alone how many there actually are and what they each mean.
watching takamura demolish his opponents is a nice break from the constant struggle of other matches we're treated to

Looks like Miyata is now the OPBF Champ, and he's waiting for Ippo to challenge him, I hope he keeps that belt before then. Also, when you're marathoning this, you really don't want to see flashbacks, so that flashback of Ippo's and Date's fight felt unnecessary to me, and the music that plays every second is bothering me, I can see a lot of differences between this season and the first. But it looks like Ippo will be sparring with Martinez, so I'm excited about it.

Kinda annoying how miyata wins, i know he HAD to win for plot progression and all, but come on with that crappy weight control and those two bloody crosses and all that punishment, how is one punch going to finish arnie? I know HnI is far-fetched but that just irked me.

Agree with everyone that the flashback was just a waste of time. Seriously, did they expect people to forget who Date was or something?

Other than that, this ep was more build up than anything. Looking forward to seeing Ippo spar with the world champ. Pretty sure the Date fight is gonna be the best fight in the series also

It's better when recap episodes are stand-alone, so we can just skip them. And they can be kept off the DVDs/Blu-rays altogether. Actually it's better when they don't exist.
