One thing that always bothered me too is that Mizuki is probably 16/17 and Kuze is a lot older, like mid 30's right?

The gravestone for Yuuko said she was born in 1982, I think, and the anime aired 2007. So Kuze being approximately the same age would put him at about 25 years old.

Yuuko was born 1982 and died 1998 - so she was ~16 depending on her birthday. Since she seems to be a freshman in school and the others are Senpais to her probably more like ~15 (15 is the age you usually get in to high school, but still depending on your birthday a lot). So the others are at least one year older, like ~16 or ~17 if they are in their third year already. Fast forward to 2009 (Kuze's calendar) and they should be ~27-28.

Regarding Mizuki, she was a junior at school in "memories" so again ~15, roughly one year has passed, meaning in "melodies" she should be around ~16 years old.

The ending was nice, but I didn't really get it. The episode didn't make much sense for me. I didn't get how Yuuko could still talk to Yuu, accept the flowers, talk to Hiro and Miya etc, when she was already dead. This series has left me rather confused.

Hey - I am a bot confused about the origins of the two KEYS. I know one of the keys originated from YUKO while she was in school in Japan. Where did the other come from? Additionally, I know they grew up in Japan - How did Himura, Kuze and Chihuro end up in Austrailia?

And it episode 1 - Who was Kuze referring to as "The princess"

For some reason i didn't like that season as i liked the first one. I didn't really feel sorry for Kuze, i felt like it was to much drama with all his thoughts and everything. However, i did feel a little sorry for Yuuko and her story, especially in the 11th episode when she died. ;3;
7/10.

If you'd have played the VN you would have felt even less sorry for Kuze.

...then that happened.

I hoped that the disappointment of the first season would be redeemed in the second one, but it looks like Minori has a completely different view on storytelling than I do, so we are absolutely incompatible. A pity, SHAFT really put in a lot of effort and I could bear through it thanks to that, well done, that was the best you could make of the source material. The art and the music was exceptional, no doubt about that.

6/10.

This is so sad! I mean I'm glad that Yuuko and Yuu gets to see each other in the end but why can't she just stay with him? Well I suppose that tragedies are suppose to be tragic so that's not gonna happen. I cried half a dozen times during the twenty minutes of the time I finished the anime. Seriously, I don't care about what happens to Mizuki or the other couples in the story, i guess I'm really devoted to Yuu and Yuuko. I watched it for a couple of times and every time i end up sobbing on the laptop, i usually never cries, whether it is reading a book or watching anime. But this story is just way too sad! That the reason i don't really like tragedies, especially when it's an anime, 'cause you can actually see one of the protagonist die, not just read it on text. Despite that, i still watch them a lot, i don't know why but most tragedies are more romantic than comedies. Before i watch this anime, i liked the sort that the main character got some superpowers and kill bad guys and in the end he goes yelling "AHHHHH!!!!!" and the enemies does the same and a white light covered the screen and somehow they ended up with their backs facing each other and the bad guy collapses as blood gush out of a wound somewhere on his body. I'm really starting to hate them now, they are absolutely horrible in comparison with Ef! Oh, and i'm considering about writing an fanfic about this thing, i usually do that when i'm not satisfied with an anime or manga. Anyways, i'm just saying that this anime rocks! I wonder if there are any other anime that could make me as hysterical as this one?

Best part and most memorable of the episode for me was the part when Himura was parting with yuuko. He blinks as he tells her that he won't be lonely, which means he was lying if you remembered the earlier episodes. Yuuko notices that and tears up.

I thought that was very well done. The studio didn't beat you over the head with it, its slightly subtle and has a strong impact on me.

I like yuu x yuuko the most out of all the pairings, so the ending wasn't really good for me. The author let her die as a easy way to create drama, and i kind of resent being cheated out of a happy ending.

too sad......................................

Honestly, Yuuko dying just pissed me off....

A sad ending isn't necessarily a good one. Overall the Anime was pretty good, but how they concluded everything was a huge let down.

I mean really, Yuuko and Hiruma have been through SO MUCH crap....they deserved a happy ending.

Good god, so much syrupy sentimentality it's like a Key VN times a hundred...and Kyoto Animation managed to refine Kanon into a pretty good series. Did Shaft do nothing but fool around with visual gimmicks? They were decent and sometimes even quite effective but when this much puffed-up nonsense is underneath it, no amount of animating ingenuity will rescue it.

ef - a tale of memories.
ef - a tale of melodies.

I can't find words worth expressing how much those two shows moved my heart. Simply beautiful in so many ways.

the ending was so sad for yuu and yuuko.
after yuuko told yuu that he didnt "love" her but instead "loved" her was so heartwrenching.... ;_;

those two were meant to be together forever, but i love this bittersweet ending

and im happy for everybody else finding happiness.
i never really bought into the kuze and mizuki love story throughout the whole series, it just didnt seem natural, and they didnt get too much time to connect and develop their romance.
nevertheless, i also enjoyed how their story ended happily, in order to make up for the sadness of yuu and yuuko's ending

yuu and yuuko's story alone is enough to give this series a 10/10

Mizuki and Kuze was such a shitty and unbelievable pairing, there was seriously no source or reason for their attraction, let alone "love" If anything Mizuki should have been in love with Yuuko. Yuu and Yuuko deserved the happier ending but it's obvious that they wouldn't seeing as the first season pretty much established that Yuuko is all sorts of dead.

Overall, It was more of the same but kind of less enjoyable since the couples in the first season were better (well aside from Yuu/Yuuko which are easily the best pair in the entire series).

Overall this series was a gigantic disappointment compared to Memories but still fine. Then again, it's almost unfair to compare anything to the masterpiece that was Renji and Chihiro's story. Exceptional use of misdirection and masterful drama.

The Mizuki and Kuze story lacked a significant amount of depth for me. The whole thing about choosing your battles and masks was pretty shallow in the grand scheme of things.

Yuuko and Yuu probably had the most disappointing story of the major 4 because of the lack of emotional impact it had. Very well fleshed out but nothing about their relationship I really deemed beautiful or unique until the very last scene, which was admittedly pretty powerful. Could have been done better though.

Miyako's story weighed down Memories for me but it wasn't enough to offset the brilliance that was Chihiro's character.

Damn ! I don't know what to say to describe this anime.
This, this a very awesome anime !

Anime filled with love, affection, emotion, sadness, happiness, everything !
Every scene is great. Especially in the last episode. Where Yuuko met Yuu-kun and talking on the roof of the school. This wonderfull and the most sad moment when Yuuko said, 'This is precious feelings but please keep looking forward'.

I think this anime will provide valuable lessons for anyone who watched

A perfect final episode, this anime was so great both first and the second season had such a nice story! Bind together with the future and the past to make an epic story for the viewer to watch and care for!

The whole story of this second season really had something special just like the first season though I've got to say the story of the first season had just that bit more effect! Still a great story where I smiled and cried for the great moments presented in this Anime!

The whole story is a masterpiece on it's own! 9/10

This series was so so so damn good that its way in competition with clannad. If only people knew and stopped watching silly animes like naruto (which sucks now), Ef - a tale of melodies would probably be in the top ten.

Overall my rating 11/10 :p

This was amazing, I really think that this season is just a bit better than the first season, and that is enough for me to rate if 10/10. It might decide to re-rate the first season though, it's around the 9,5 in my head and I can't decide.
Although this ending doesn't really make a lot of sense because "miracles don't exist" according to the key characters, it still fits the show really well for some reason.
Also the happy ending opening was great, truly a thing that fits Shaft.
This will be something I won't forget anytime soon.

damn, I fell so ashamed that I didn't notice that, and I even watched all the episodes in one day, anyway, ef a tale of melodies was great indeed, but I liked more ef a tale of memories, probably because the story was more touching/emotional for me, and I also liked more the characters from Memories.

Both of the series are amazing, although I liked more ef a tale of memories.

I liked Memories better overall. But Melodies had the perfect ending for this series. The whole last half of this episode hit me a lot harder than I was expecting. I had to keep myself from crying just so I could keep watching what was happening without tears blocking my vision. I loved the uplifting message at the end. It fit this series perfectly. I thought it had it's ups and downs throughout it's 12 episodes, but it had a great ending.

I really didn't like Himura in Memories, but I slowly started to like him more and him as the flashbacks progressed. I was much more interested in his and Yuuko's story than anything else. I now understand his attitude and lines from Memories a lot more now. He actually may be my favorite from this series. Either him, Renji, or Chihiro.

Final Thoughts:
+Great Ending
+Pretty good characters that were all well developed
+Unique art and animation
-Kind of slow, at points
-Wasn't a huge fan of the Kuze X Mizuki relationship (kind of a big age difference)
Overall: 8/10

So I'll say straight away that I really enjoyed both series and this one I liked much better. It had a darker and more psychological feel to it and I felt the YukoxHimura arc was the strongest. There were also nice moments of romance and drama that I just gobbled up.

Now I can't say I'm disappointed, because I'm not. It's just that the story (I'll refer to the story as both memories and melodies from now on) is very cliched and shallow. I felt they could have done so much more with the HironoxMiyako and KuzexMizuki arcs. They were good but there was nothing deep or special about them. Just drama that kind of plays out in an expected way. These two arcs are disproportionately weaker than the other ones in their respective parts. I think this is what weakens it a bit.

I have to mention that I really liked the OST for the story and I'll probably be listening to it a lot over the coming weeks. Animation was of course also beautiful. I'll play the VN at some point as well. So all in all it was a nice series. The romance scenes especially were well done.
-Nothing can stay unchanged. Even so, can you still keep on loving this place?

-Be still my soul; when change and tears are past, all safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

I liked the overall darker atmosphere (more than the 1st season), those church scenes with organ music in the background were awesome. And I'm not a believer in the traditional sense.
I really enjoyed the philosophical discussions, they somehow felt meaningful and worth to be remembered. I wish I had more such conversations in life.
Also, I like Yuuko a lot, and her gloves only add to that by conveying (even more) sophistication and purity, at least to me. Even if she died, everything that she represents -- her personality, beliefs, etc. -- can live on.

What's the point of all this? // There's no point. I'm doing it because I can. That's all there is to it. // What will be left behind after this? // Nothing at all. She'll die and I'll burn out. The end. That's all. (Requiem for the Phantom)

Also, not sure if anyone noticed, as i didn't read every post for every episode, but the first 6 episodes spell out "erutuf", so future backwards. If you take the "re" away (and the "for" from the last episode") the later six episodes spell out "future".

This anime was amazing. There was so much depth and emotion that every episode was incredibly fun to watch and really impacted you emotionally. The scene in this episode where Amamiya and Himura were on the roof was so touching, but so sad at the same time. The story for this anime confused me a little at times, but it was still amazing and I give it a 9/10. I will definitely be watching memories soon, but its going to have to be really good to top this season.

Good ending. In the end every single character in the series got the closure they needed, no complaints from me. No season 3 necessary.

This season was such a dark watch compared to the first one, glad it had a happy ending.

Episode: 5/5
Series: 9/10

You know what my favorite thing about this episode is? If Yuko is an angel, then Heaven exists. And if Heaven exists, then Hell exists. And if Hell exists... well let's just say that Amamiya isn't going to have a good eternity =)

Great ending!!! I LOVE the message this series gave us towards the end!!! VERY encouraging! The Ef series (Mostly Melodies) is my #1 FAVORITE anime of ALL TIME!!!

For those who are upset that only Himura and Yuuko had a sad ending and not Kuze and Mizuki:
Well Kuze and Mizuki's story isn't 100% a happy ending either.
Kuze is still dying. The surgery prolonged his life. That doesn't mean he's going to have a normal life span. He will still die early. He won't get to live as long as Himura or Nagi. And he may still have heart attacks. Didn't they say that his chances of living past 3 years is VERY LOW. I think lower than his chance of surviving the surgery. Kuze and Mizuki's relationship won't last as long as the others. And when the time comes; it'll be hard to let each other go. It's ALWAYS HARD to let go of the person you love. :(

Even if they live each day full of laughter and happiness; there will still be a bit of sadness inside their heart.

By the way:
Have you guys noticed that all the characters in this series have artistic skills???
Hiro Hirono draws manga and Nagi Hirono does painting.
Kyosuke does films/videos and camera work.
Chihiro and Renji write stories/books.
Yuu draws and does architecture, paints, and plays violin.
Yuuko may play the piano? Or at least in the prolouge.
Kuze is a professional violinist.
Mizuki sings.
The only two that don't have artistic skills are Miyako and Kei.
Though I could be wrong???

I just thought that was interesting. :)
