TOKYO (AFP) – A Japanese research team has revealed it had created a technology that could eventually display on a computer screen what people have on their minds, such as dreams.

Researchers at the ATR Computational Neuroscience Laboratories succeeded in processing and displaying images directly from the human brain, they said in a study unveiled ahead of publication in the US magazine Neuron.

While the team for now has managed to reproduce only simple images from the brain, they said the technology could eventually be used to figure out dreams and other secrets inside people's minds.

Ok, so maybe not quite yet, but still, this is some awesome shit if it's not a hoax.

Discuss.

100% worth it if it means we get virtual reality. The ultimate form of escapism is almost here. It will be the greatest thing since the invention of alcohol.

Damn, that's awesome...yet scary at the same times. Won't be nice living in a world were thoughtcrime can actually be proven.

ChäoS;HEAd gives a similar view on the world and "reality" like I thought about in the recent years. The world we know is just a view on things our brain received from our senses. Those information is transmited by electrical impulses and such things (ît's a pity I don't have a clue about biology), so if it was possible to manipulate these from the outside (in a way the brain still can work with), you could live in any "world".
The only problem with that is the energy source for the brain, your body which is physically still in the "reality" as we call it, and if it ends functioning your brain won't be able to live anywhere.
