Why are UK mags better than US ones?

To the group mind. Why are UK hobby mags better than US magazines that cover similar genres? Examples that are not anime: 1) "SFX" and "SciFi Now", really make the house magazine of the US based cable network "SciFi" look puny and pathetic, 2) over many years I've been involved in the Shortwave Listening (SWL) hobby and the UK magazines that deal with that hobby really outshine their US counterparts. Ideas, anyone?
