Does anyone know if a Blu-ray release of Akira is coming? I'm dying to see this in HD. I managed to grab a HDTV rip on the net somewhere but it's full of ugly compression artifacts and I really want this on an official disc!
If they ever do get around to make one, I really hope it'll get a proper transfer unlike some other older anime like Ghost in the shell... yuck!

It should be out on Feburary 4, or so the Blu-Ray website says.

Tokyo Metro Explorers is also avaliable in the Blu-Ray format.

Well I just saw it, a truly amazing experience. There's a new audio mix that just blows everything else out of the water. If there's one film you want to test out your surround setup with, it's this one. I've never heard the rear speakers so active before.
Highly recommended!
