What was the point of Aiko?

I've always wondered...What was Aiko's place in the story or what role she played to be in the OP with the other two girls .Okay..so she does play some sort of adviser to Shin but after 8 episodes or so she completely disappears and even before that she didn't appear so much and she didn't have anything interesting going on around her.We didn't even get a past history between her and Shin. It seems to me like She was more of a plot device to move the story .

So my question is why was she there at all ?

She has her own storyline. You watch, how sad she is, because Shinichiro doesnt love her back and how she has to put up with it. This anime is not only about Shinichiro.
