Let me start off by saying that I love FLCL, I think its a true work of art that mimics a great piece of literature.
However, looking at many anime lists the ratings differed, from 2's to 10's.
I recently talked to somebody who absolutley hated FLCL (of course she watched the english dubs, which i later watched on youtube and part of me died)

I'm guessing that the results will vary, as the plot was kind of abstract in a way.

I enjoyed the craziness and the music enough to give it an 8. I should rewatch it soon, I'll probably end up updating my score to a 9. We'll see. Outstanding for sure, I'm a fan of mindfucks.

I said masterpiece because they seemed to get exactly what they wanted. Two more eps left, but I'm very happy with it. 8 or 9, definitely.

I'm not usually very into comedy, preferring my anime black tragic drama srs business, but this is great.

Also, would any kind gearhead here mind telling me what model vespa Haruko rides? Because, well, do want.

I avoid "comedy" centered anime like the plague, but FLCL was a big exception(along with a few others). FLCL is a very moving coming of age tale with fast paced visuals and eccentric comedy style. And even though I am not a fan of straight up rock, the show is coated with remarkable music. It was also one of the first "real" anime shows I watched.

It's one of my favorites and up there with what I consider essential anime/classics.

Personaly I think it's one of the best animes of all time and is a must watch. people who don't like it either are hating it just to try to be cool or to dense to understand it. altough it's comedy it's still very deep and insperational.
It doesn't think, it doesn't feel, it doesn't laugh or cry..... All it does from dusk till dawn is make the soldiers die.

MASTERPIECE.

Symbolism, directing, artwork, characterization, originality, music, voice-acting, themes, all is well with the world.

I was totally agreeing with you until you said that. I enjoyed FLCL initially just the same as everybody else does, hyped up on caffiene and enjoying it purely for its spontaneous nature and top-notch animation, but after viewing it multiple times over the years since it aired, I've found it to be one of the best tales of simply growing up that anime's ever produced. The plot within plots and excellent use of flashbacks/flashforwards aren't often seen in anime, and are very refreshing after wading through other mediocre series. Also, it's one of the only anime to use music as well as it did (and awesome music at that.)

Wonderful show. Didn't really appreciate when I 1st watched it 'cause I was trying to understand it too much. Once you relax and enjoy the ride you really see how good it is. Some of Gainax's best work.

I liked it too, sheer randomness really.

All a growing boy needs.

I really really liked the Pillows though.

I actually downloaded the whole soundtrack, which is suprisingly long for a 6 epsiode anime

Harhar, I actually enjoyed it more when I finally could relax and attempt to decipher what it meant (as opposed to what happened, which took a second viewing to get down completely). It's as multifarious as its animation is, masterfully crafted both in a cool and detached way and in that feverish, frantic style one is immediately met by.

To be perfectly honest, when I first saw FLCL, I didn't think it was that great. I found it weird and a little creepy. Of course, I was like 12, and had only so many anime influences at the time, so by comparison, it was pretty out there. After a few years passed I saw it again, and this time it caught my interest. Sure, it was still crazy, but the comedy got me interested. After seeing more, I realized it was more deep and had a lot more going than I saw right away. Now, every time I watch it, it seems I find things I missed the first couple of times, which makes it like a newer experience.

I always heard good comments about this series, but I just finished watching it and I don't see the greatness on it. The animation and music were very nice, but the story was just confusing.

Haruko was just interested in her thing, as they said, the school girl also had her trauma.

I liked the animation, but that's about it. I think part of that's due to having listened to the directors' commentary.

I don't remember who was talking, but they were saying how they actually only wanted to use one song from The Pillows, but when they talked to them, the band said to use all of the music. So the director or whoever stuffed as much of their music in as possible. He goes on to say that he designed the scenes to fit the music, instead ofthe other way around. The same thing with how they created Canti. The TV screen for a head was just a spur of the moment thing. Same with adding in mecha.

It has been awhile since I watched the anime or listened to the commentary, so I'm not sure if that's completely correct, but it's probably close. The end result of what the anime became is probably not what they originally had in mind when they first started.

I absolutely LOVED this series. Granted, I don't think it's a 10, but I did give it a 9. It's one of my top favorites and no matter how many times I watch, I don't get tired of it. The animation is fluid and crisp, the music is amazing throughout the entire show(that's a rare thing I think), and the way they portrayed a story about growing up was amazing. Not only that, but it gets what it wants without dragging out the story for hundreds of episodes. And the randomness of using a TV for a character, I see nothing wrong with random acts to create something. It's better that and to be overly contrived on creating something.

Series itself aside, I honestly liked the dub job on this series. To me, it's one of the few that actually did well in trying to pretty much match the original(I thought Haruko sounded a lot like the original voice actress).

Yeah I agree that the dub was good... the OP needs to look past the whole silly sub vs dub debate to be able to enjoy the dubs that ARE good.

Anyway I thought it was great... its a bit embarrassing to hear negative reviews and comments on it just because they didn't understand it... as if its the anime's fault that they are dense. Its refreshing to watch something that requires a little thinking and a lot of suspension of disbelief every once and a while.

Fooly Cooly (FLCL) is perfect in every way. I first saw it on [adult swim] and thought, WTF is this. I had no idea what was going on at the time. After a while I gave it another shot and watched it through. Best idea ever! The animation, music and characters all put the show perfectly together. Even the dub was good. Every year I come back to this anime to relive it, being a short 6 ep series makes it easy to rewatch over and over again. The cool part is everytime I go through the series I find small things I never noticed before or didn't understand at the time. Highly recommended, a very enjoyable series.

In my opinion, in terms of mindfucks very little beats FLCL at 3 am in the original Japanese and watching all 6 episodes back to back while trying to actually understand the plot. That's fun. Very fun. My brother and I decided that the closest analogy for it would be bashing your brain in with a flaming duck.

FLCL has been my favorite anime since it premiered on Adult Swim, when I was only a wee lad (Well, I think like 3 or MAYBE 4th grade... Perhaps 2nd :P). Of course, I never understood it back then, but I loved its craziness. Now that I understand it actually, I love it even more! I've seen every episode too many times to count...

I think that when people say they hate it, is because they're just lame and they don't understand it completely...

I gave it a 5/10, with 7.5/10 being my average score. I found it really hard to rate after I watched the last episode. The ending was pretty good, it wrapped things up nicely and that's probably why I have such a tough time with the score. It took me a while to watch the whole thing because episode 3 or 4 was absolutely dreadful and I barely made it through. I appreciate the fact that people love it for it's random and unique style, but I guess I'm not one of those people. At points I thought the show was just being random for no reason whatsoever and it was kinda lazy and it definitely tried my patience in that regard. It's so crazy that it fell into the love it or hate it category.
So, to answer the question... I didn't really like FLCL(Although KAA did an amazing job subbing it).

It's true a lot of people DO love it for its craziness, but I love how much depth it has, even though it's only six episodes. And it was probably episode 3 that was dreadful, because that's really the least to the point episode there is... Episode 4 actually has a lot of stuff to do with the show, actually, so I really love it. And the ending of that episode is great!

I seriously don't get why people like FLCL. It's like why do people hate Justin Bieber. Why do people like Harry Potter or Twilight.

This anime is just weird and gets even more weird. And people say that like it for it's weirdness but it's not even weird like youtube poop and funny.

For me it was a crappy boring anime. The only reason I watched all of them was because it's a short anime, I had nothing better to do and most of all, I'm a shotacon.
And Naota was beyond cute. =] I watched it for his cuteness and when he weared
his cute animal costume I had masturbate...NOT!! LOL

I vote for LEGENDARY MASTERPIECE
Wins my #1 favourite spot. So far seen it more than 5 times.
Loved it cause of the top-notch animation and art style. Can't explain how much of a fresh anime it is. The narration and story is brilliant. Excellent pacing. Very good character developement. Has one of the best anime soundtracks. All packed into 6 PERFECT episodes. It felt like a casual anime; doesn't try to be better than other animes but to me it was. I think I can understand why people didn't like it as much as me. FLCL felt really personal to me and it was pretty much everything I can ask for in an anime.

FLCL was the first real anime I watched, so I'm probably more than a little biased. I can't see anything ever replacing FLCL in my favourites and, compared to everything else I've seen, I believe it's earned it's 10/10 (although I do hand out perfect scores like candy...)

The first time I saw it I had no idea what was going on, I even missed about half of episode 3 since I was watching it on youtube and nobody had actually uploaded the whole thing. I just kind of went along for the ride assuming all anime was like this, still thoroughly enjoying myself. Afterwards I read a short article someone had written explaining what happened and rewatched it all over again, everything made a lot more sense.

I've since re-watched the series a good six or seven times, some episodes more than others, and every time I do I notice more stuff. I think the thing that really helps is watching it in good quality, there are a lot of things that are integral to the plot that I couldn't even see streaming. Overall I'd say that, while the weirdness is an integral part of FLCL it's not really why I love it. It's the combination of the numerous art-switches, the amazing music, the fluid animation, the little things the animators hid for people (if you pay close attention when all the doves fly out of the T.V. and everything's exploding you'll see one of them simply spinning in midair before launching into the sky,) and the stories. Not the overall story about Atomsk and Mechannica, which felt like it was just there to give some form of direction, but the little stories which played out episode to episode.

Words can not describe how much I dislike this unfunny, forced, plotless and wannabe "hidden message" trainwreck of an anime.

6 episodes of junk I wasted my time on that I will never get back. Even though it's been quite a while since I watched FLCL, I just rage even more every time I see it sitting on my list.
