After aimlessly wandering the desert in search for a good character driven josei series since the end of Chihayafuru Season 1, I have finally come across the oasis.

Watched Ep 1 and 2 today, and they were amazing. I have not read the manga, but it feels like Watanabe is doing an excellent job keeping the pacing afloat, with Kanno doing an amazing job with the music as usual. Oh yeah, I shouted in joy when I heard Endo's voice. Being Sen's love-at-first-sight, I hope Yurika is a major character.

PS: Kaoru's cousin

Definitely one of my favourite shows of the season and I won't be surprised if it becomes my favourite one in the end.

Fantastic episode. So far it has not disappointed and exceeded my expectations!
Art is great, loved the jam session they had, rooted for Sentarou in the fights and laughed at Kaoru's swimming. Plus it ended on a great note with Sentarou saving a girl from a bunch of no good thugs and possibly has his first "love at first sight" moment!
Can't wait for next week!

I was feeling the session that occurred halfway through the episode (since I play jazz as well, albeit not as good). Totally feeling it. I hope at the end the two male protags (and getting their respective females) become true bros. Because bros and music mixed together is paradise.

The only series this season that I can hardly stand waiting for new episodes of. If every episode is as good as the first two have been, it's definitely the anime of the season for me. The fact that it has some of the best uses of music I've heard in an anime doesn't hurt eiither.

Religion in Japan:

I liked how the session included key elements of Jazz like improvisation. On that note I didn't get the feeling that Kaoru earned the right to be in the basement playing Jazz with Sentarou and Junichi yet. His progression just hasn't incorporated anything meaningful yet as to point toward him learning how to let go and feel that 'swing'. He's developing too quickly. I can completely agree with all the praise in the forum based on this anime so far being much better than the usual fodder. However the death of the Triangle, the use of the cliche Bullies, and the introduction of the Hime-sama character at the end just really disappointed me. I was hoping for a meaningful psychological case study into our main characters. Maybe I'm missing the point. Perhaps the series wants to be improvisational like Jazz itself and continually move in different directions, adding new characters without effectively developing the main characters first. The 12 episode factor seems to be a ticking time bomb for me now. I was hoping the series wouldn't feel rushed, and I haven't read the manga's next chapters yet, but I'm afraid it just might be.The comedic elements were also extremely slapstick vs. subtle and well thought out. This episode just really felt all over the place to me, I'm curious about the manga now and am going to go read the next few chapters to see where it's going and if I should expect more or less from this story.

Personally, I think it would be nice to see a religious message in this. So long as it isn't "preachy". Just having a character learn about and perhaps convert to the religion would be enough. But if they go for shoving it down the viewers throats... Nah, that won't happen.

As a Christian I would no be completely crazy about this anime being used for conversion. I think seeing Ri and Sen as Christians throws in a little something different into this series and gives a little bit different perspective about who these characters are. Being just two episodes into the series doesn't show how much their Christianity influences them or how much it will influence the series. I'm sure those who read the manga can give more insight to this aspect.

As for the jazz and 12 episodes, do you think this might reflect the 12-bar jazz blues progression?
What if the Hokey Pokey is what it is all about?

The tone of this is so perfect. Nostalgic and beautiful.

I just hope it doesn't become "CONVERT TO CHRISTIANITY!"

I trust it not to get preachy.

This is about how I feel for it. I love the show, but the religion thing hit my like a truck. I hope it's not going to be a thing, but it probably will, considering the focus it's getting. I've had my deal of discrimination (as a Hindu in middle school), and it left a bad taste about religion and advocation of any in general.

I just want this show to be about jazz and friendship =\
(even if the Kaoru likes Ritsuko; at least there's not triangle. Hopefully, it's not all a long one-sided chain either...)
AHHH, I hope this stays good and doesn't become a pain. The vibe of this show is so good -_-

Didn't you guys hear him say "Mukae" when grabbing Nishimi's hand in ep 1??? He was waiting for her, he thought Nishimi was Mukae, that finally she came to get him for class! Reading subs is fine, but when it's Japanese Audio, you most often hear the names in quite a lot of dialogues.

No, you're wrong about that. Sen said: "Yatto mukae ni kitekudasatta to desu ka?" - "mukae ni kuru" means 'to come for someone' and this sentence sounds very polite so it wasn't addressed to Ritsuko. Besides, Sen calls Ritsuko by "Rikko", not "Mukae". ^^

Oh..! Ok.. :) Arigato! Haha.. Thanks for that! :P
Well then, he was either just dreaming, or as the scene carries on, he was waiting to catch the Key thief. :) Whoever comes to the roof will most probably have to have had the key. The gayness was only in the way Watanabe directed that scene with all those soft shimmering lights meant for first the time character meet, haha..

___

And as for the whole idea of this show having the tendency to get "preachy"... I really don't get it. It may end up being a possibility, but the probability of that happening, as I see it, is 0.01%. Why can't the subject of Christianity just be a basis of the theme of friendship over religion? I see no pointers in this show indicating Ri'ko or Sen might go all Jesus on Kaoru. LOL. Perhaps it's more of an awareness oriented thing, or even just about the atmosphere of the Jazz era setting of this anime, 1966.

___

The OP is stuck in my head. :P
Despite the fact that I haven't liked YUKI's other op or ed songs for other shows, this is.. pure bliss. :) The music is just amazing, soothing... reverberating. :)

I find funny that people are concerned about 2 character being christian... Don't we often see in anime (buddhist/shintoist) priests, and people that pray at temple? This is religion too ;)

Religion can be an important part of people, and faith is something really interesting that I haven't see adressed in anime (with serious/realistic tone).

And I'm not a christian, I'm an agnostic, and I really dislike proselytism.

(But I can understand why you're concerned if you're american... there is some serious problems here with integrist)

Other than that, it was a wonderfull episode

Some people have to get over about wondering why there is Christianity (Roman Catholic, Protestant, Methodist, etc.) in Japan, and they should be doing their homework first.

Otherwise, another perfect episode. I laugh at those who voted "dislike"... and those who don't like jazz (these creatures have to wake up and realize there's more to music than what one is getting on the radio).
I play, the haters lose.

After finishing the first two episodes I have to say: It's fantastic as expected considering the talent behind the series. This actually gave me a somewhat similar indescribable feeling to Honey and Clover, one of my all time favorite anime series.

The characters were likable, the music was solid, some solid directing (such as the scene in this episode where the three of them are swimming and you can just FEEL the fun they are having, topped with Kaoru's "I wish I could just take you further away from here" monologue).

This and Fate/zero are definitely my favorites of this season.

I think it’s awesome that they made the characters Catholic. Japan has a very poor understanding of Christianity and it’s understandable with only around 1% of their population being Christian. The problem is that the way they portray Christianity can lead to negative stereotypes. Christianity is either presented as something that is bad or completely different than what it is. Prime examples would be school girls being nuns (which stems from them equating a nun to a temple priestess) or the church is a power hungry entity only concerned with gaining more money and power. Even Madoka Magica presented Christianity in a negative light. I’m glad to finally see an anime that is treating Christianity with respect and honesty, though I don’t think it is necessary or prudent for them to proselytize it.

It is a big deal that the girl he has a crush on is Catholic. He just realized that if he pursues a relationship with her then he will most likely have to become Catholic which is something I doubt he has ever considered. That would be a major life change and he has to come to terms with that and his desires.

I understand that there are people who would disagree with me but I would like to finish by saying that Japan’s understanding of Christianity is more from ignorance than from a serious inquire into the faith.

The live session was amazing making me like Jazz.

Ri-chan X Richie... although it seems like Sentaro is blocking Richie hahaha poor Richie his trying to get Ri-chan give him a break haha, although i dont think its on purpose. Oh Sentero is a boxer guys and Richie a briefs guy XD. *Going in circles going in circles*

Love to see both of the dudes find their girls, that at least assures me that this isn't what I had originally thought it was. I don't know why I love this anime so much, but like everyone else, I do. Two episodes in and I'm blown away. Great characters and great development - it all feels very real, and I can't wait to see how this whole romance situation works out. I don't think Ri-chan likes Richie in that way, though. Hopefully, Sentaro fares better. So glad I have 2 more episodes ready to watch.
