Really, thorny arc is not that good if compared to benizakura, kyuubei, yoshiwara, and 4 divas arc.
The fight and the joke was so-so.

The only good thing about this arc is the ending when hijikata send an blank paper to his death brother

3/5 an OK episode

I waited for a month so I could marathon this arc, and boy it was worth the wait. SO EPIC. I was in tears... I would've loved to see more of Sougo vs that kickass girl tho... he was also pretty badass. So thrilled to have Shinsengumi arc after so long :)

I just got trolled with the empty letter xDD.

But yeah, it was an OKAY arc. I honestly didn't enjoy it much I have to say.
I found it kind of slow and uninteresting, however the fights and Hijikata's past were nice.

Oh, and Slumdog Millionaire parody next episode!! It'll be hilarious :)

I loved the episode, I hoped for some more Gintoki action but yeah, it's Hijikata's arc so it's understandable :)

So now they know about Gintoki's past... I'm curious if they'll do something with that in the future. And of course Takasugi had to turn up at the end, I'm waiting for the full out fight between him and Gintoki.

Am I the only one who is kinda glad that Shinpachi and Kagura weren't in this arc? I mean I like both of them but it would've been strange and kinda awkward if they turned up, they're not related to the whole incident at all. And it's kind of like they're not "mature/twisted" enough to fit in, okay Kagura has some messed up background but it isn't like she herself is as "lost/thorny" as Hijikata and Gintoki are... Just a random thought... :)

Anyway this arc made me love Gintama' even more, nothing but respect for being able to write such a funny yet epic and touching manga/anime.

Finally caught up with this arc and I agree with this.

It's a shame, since Hijikata and the Shinsengumi are my favorites but all of their arcs so far (Kuybei, Itou, this one) have been pretty underwhelming compared to the other serious arcs.

I guess Gintama just really sets a pretty high standard with its better stories.

Still there were some cool and touching moments in this one such as the empty letters and the fight scenes.

UWOOOH. Sougo 2 cool 4 me

So-so arc. The only thing I liked a lot were Hijikata & Gin interactions. That part where Gin kicks Tetsu off the building was hilarious. I'm glad they foreshadowed that Sasaki and the assassin girl were going to appear again, because otherwise I would've thought that their characters were executed poorly this arc.

This arc was meh-ish at best.

There have been some great serious arcs out there (semi-serious are usually great), so it's not a matter of the story being too dramatic or action-packed for the series (4 Devas, Okita Mitsuba and in a lesser way Yoshiwara did hit chords with me). But this sounded unbearably edgy, affected and cool for the sake of being cool. Maybe because Isaburo was a bland character with no charismatic, relatable or imposing qualities as either a villain or somebody emotionally related to the main conflict, not to mention his attempts at comedy. Maybe because Nobume felt like the cheap instigator to Sougo's cool sadism that is starting to get old, and totally personality-less. Or because Tetsunosuke always feels like a complete strange in the storyline trying desperately to fit in both the comedy or the drama, despite he's the main and everything in this arc passes through his experience.

I appreciate Hijikata's coolness from time to time, but this is not really the image of the character I'm most fond of, nor the reason why I always enjoy his antics. I felt that this arc didn't add anything to the emotional core of the character that I didn't get in Okita Mitsuba or in the episode where he joined Kondo's dojo. It did add some more drama to his past, but not in a very successful way. I only barely got sad at the letter in the end of this episode, which was a great move. I guess having Tetsunosuke as the catalyst of these reveals was more of a con than a pro.

Hey, now that I think about it, the arc began the same way, with Tetsu throwing a letter in the river. But unlike the beginning, he's now in peace with himself.

Hijitaka was so epic. Him and Gintoki form one hell of a duo.

Isaburo will obviously come back later. He seem to have an important role in Takasugi commando.

That next episode look freaking hilarious. A Slumdog Millionaire parody, I didn't thought I would see that in Gintama xD

I think this is my favourite arc, I'm not sure though. We got to learn more about one of my favourite characters, Hijikata, there were amazing action scenes and it was hilarious. The batting scene was funny and it got even funnier when Yamazaki started throwing the anpans and Kondo was humping the pole xD
The next episode is going to be a parody of Slumdog Millionaire, I'm going to watch it right now!

So Hijikita and the others from Shinsengumi didn't know that Gin-san was Shiroyasha? that's news to me. I thought everyone knew that.

Fine finish for a really solid arc, I wished there was more details and screentime towards Hijikata's past tho. I feel like it could have been much better and more impactful.

Next episode is going to be a comedy gold, I can already feel it.

Loved the arc overall - I always enjoy the Shinsengumi.
This ep was so full of win - from SM batting, to anpan factory, to umm.. pole humping? Then mayo grenade & “model citizen” face Gin, lol.
I admit I also got a bit teary-eyed at the gravesite scene. Wahh - I wanna hug Toshi!!
Then .. squeee - Takasugi! Plus fishing for ninjas with donuts - definitely something you’ll only find in Gintama!

Before this, I hadn't really thought about the fact that the Sgumi didn't know about Gintoki's past. Uhm.

I loved the serious tone this arc had. Imo the comedy kill it for me: the whole scene with the Check gang trying to escape was dumb.

A fantastic ending to what quickly became one of my favorite "serious" arcs. The rap recap was excellent, the action was just as great as I have come to expect from Gintama (although it didn't top Hijikata cutting a fucking bullet in half) and the comedy was just as good as some of the non-serious arcs or episodes (Gintoki getting arrested is officially one of my favorite moments from all of Gintama).
