A short story dedicated to most distance lovers, which are being more and more common every year, thanks to the internet.

Mm, I think I expected more from this. The love story was nice, yes, but other things kind of bugged me. The sci-fi element with visiting other planets and fighting aliens was cool, but the science was kinda weird. Or at least that's what I thought, but it appears I was wrong after quickly looking things up. The whole age thing was interesting and reminded me of my physics class, relativity and all that ... ;P
Ehm, the music was nice and I liked the animation (except for the characters ... they looked weird lol) but I think I was a bit let down. Would you really wait 8 years for one text? :S I mean, it feels kinda weird. I thought he woulda moved on and gotten married or something lol. Did she die at the end? o_O Well, it was nice how it ended, but ... I dunno, I didn't think it was super special or anything. 7/10

I was waiting for the moment, the big drop. It never came. It was still nice at times and the story overall was pretty good, but it suffered from the short run time.

Watched it again.

It was a hell of a lot better the first time. First time I cried like a newborn, this time, not a tear was shed.

:l I am saddened, but not in the way I wanted to be.

So sad....hope the actual ending will be that, Mikako didn't die. It would be far depressing if she dies in that alien hunting. Being selected by no choice is far worse and unfair, compare to joining the battle by having her volunteer herself. This shows how the real world is unfair when you're forced to do something you don't want to do.

Incredible OVA! Despite being a bit short, it managed to pull off some great emotional effects. Definitely worth the 25 minutes of my time.

Well this is biased, but I only thought it was okay. I didn't like it because the art is so different and old (I care about art a lot and prefer today's style), because I was watching in horrible quality (couldn't find a download w/ Eng. subs- sounded like a phone's video camera quality of picture and sound), and because there was action. I already explained the first two. As for action, I think it doesn't fit the movie. They should have just made it that for some reason she was forced to leave and they got separated. I think the fighting ruined the romance of it for me.
With that said, the one thing that really amazed me is the concept- that it could take months, years, or nearly decades for a simple message to get to the other. I'm amazed he had the same phone the whole time. Anyway, I might have even liked that concept better than 5 cm per second.
3/5.

The art isn't the way it is due to age - it's because the movie was made pretty literally entirely by one man with basic programs most people have on their computers (mostly typical Adobe products like Photoshop and Premiere). It was basically an amazingly low budget deal.

I don't remember how many times I rewatched this OVA it's so good. I enjoyed this short OVA alot more than 5 centimeter and The place promised in our early days. I feel like for a 20min OVA the content far surpassed the time it aired, this is the reason why i watched this OVA at least 5+ times and every single time still discover something i didn't realize/understand.

It was ok, but not nearly as heartbreaking as 5cm/s
The character animation was kind of bad, but the landscapes were truly beautiful, it's all a bit rushed, all in all it was ok .

5cm is still better, but of course comparing this OVA with something like 5cm isn't really fair..

i give this 8/10, for a 25 minutes OVA, Shinkai did a very good job.

I quite liked it. The character designs were a bit awkward (which I can forgive considering this was a one man project) but the story and the way it unfolds is very poignant and heart wrenching. I was surprised how much of an effect it had on me. Definitely recommended.

I like it, but it doesn't make that much sense (in terms of the technology and plot holes). Why would the US Space Army pick a fourteen year old girl in the first place? How do text messages go through such a long distance? Anyway, swaying between a 6/10 and 7... It was kind of boring, especially the action scenes.

Art is pretty nice, but character designs are hard to look at. Music is nice.

then said:
To be honest I didn't really understand how the ship can traverse light years with ease, yet the messages don't. Also if it can go one way so fast why can't it come back just as fast?

People who compare this to 5cm... just no.

It's really well made if it's done by one man. Character design were off putting but the backgrounds, lightning, coloring and special effect make up for it.

Dear lord... call me superficial, but no story in the world could make up for such horrifying character designs O_O If only Shinkai's skills were reversed; backgrounds can be less beautiful and be fine, but the story is about the people, you really have to not mess them up.

I'm glad he has improved since then! ^_^

The story was really interesting.

I don't know much about space but, with really advance mechanisms like that, shouldn't mail actually be received just as fast??? (their newspapers even had the Harry Potter effect of moving pictures) idk
The cellphone design also looks out of place xD, well it was made in 2002

The boy looks like he has no connection to the people near him at all.
The girl, do they eat something there or go to the bathroom.
I would've wanted to see other people, or maybe it actually needed more people, but since the story is like about them not caring for the world and just wants to be with each other, okay.

The scenery is as brilliant as always, Makoto Shinkai trademark.
But the character design though...... wut is that, looks like somebody just farted it in.

Dat cell phone bill though....I hope cellphone companies don't fuck people over in the future with cross planetary text expenditures...

But really, I thought the story was cute, but the sci fi aspect was kinda...meh...
6/10...it's a good thing that within the last 12 years Shinkai has improved quite well

Aside from the logic that somehow her cellphone managed to send messages from space...good story (that had potential) but bad execution.

Honestly if I was the boy I would have just thrown the phone away instead of endlessly waiting for the next message.

Also really another childhood love that the boy can't get over and no happy ending, thanks Makoto Shinkai.5/10.

Captivating story, the background was well done, but I can't say the same about the characters. It's difficult to understand what was the end of the story, but it probably was made intentionally.

You'd think that the friends and family of those sent would have formed a support group of some kind.

Why was she always wearing her middle school uniform? Why did she never leave her Tracer? Why were middle schoolers on the front lines and not veteran fighter pilots?

I don't really get how this has such a high rating, especially with an ending that is inconclusive at best.

Well, I feel like I just watched 5cm/second with less symbolism/depth, lower-quality art (I know this is 2002, but c'mon, that 3D CG was butt ugly), and more logic problems. I have no idea why some are rating this so highly. -.-

Oh well. At least I didn't waste more than half an hour. 2/10.

With lower-quality art... That's because this movie was generally made by one person - Makoto Shinkai, but not by any studio ^^

"Voices of a Distant Star was written, directed and produced by Makoto Shinkai on his Power Mac G4 using LightWave, Adobe Photoshop 5.0, Adobe After Effects 4.1 and Commotion 3.1 DV software.[1][3] Around June 2000, Shinkai drew the first picture for Voices—of a girl holding a mobile telephone in a cockpit." - Wiki

After reading this entire topic, I realized that I don't care at all about plotholes/plot inconsistencies/other bullshit, as long as:
1) The characters act believably and consistently during the story;
2) The show still manages to express its themes well.

This is why I love Voices of a Distant Star, and other controversial stuff like Angel Beats.

So many people disliked this OVA because of its shaky sci-fi elements, but I hardly even paid attention to them.

It was EPIC!!~
I notice the character isn't look very good, but Im not judging something by its cover..
Too bad if only this one has the same duration like 5cm, it might touch my feel more~

Promising concept but seen it before. Bland characters and their mopey monologues aren't enough to make a touching story out of that premise by themselves.
