Thanks all :)) Fifteenth that looks interesting, I might give it a go myself :O MeNaK too! I've added to my very long planned list T_T Selphie64 counted your vote, however it's the first. It needs 5 votes to be added so 4 more to go ;) Here's the list of manga that are 1 vote short of making membership! Can you endorse them? :D

I second Lena and Saver manwha. Just finished reading it a few days ago and I think it pretty much embodies what this club is about. :) Also quick question, are you adding anime or novels to the relations? Because if yes then I nominate Juuni Kokuki and its heroine Youko Nakajima. It's in the same vein as Saver, but I think Youko is an even better character because she is more developed and uses not only her strength, but her smarts too. Also, there is a subtle romance, but because it's so subtle, none of the stupidly annoying romance tropes show up~ I am forever sad that the novels are out of print in English and never did finish the releases. ; w ; |

PinkShippuden (post # 138) tiffanyhng (post # 139) japanda (post # 142) also upvoted Saiunkoku *and being in the nitpicking department....* tiffanyhng also put a vote no. 3 in for Akatsuki no Yona >_< (Sorry, these are among my utmost favorite manga, so I notice when others read them too... for recommendation purposes, 'natch) :) |

Thanks soaring_wings, I counted your vote for Saver :)) No I don't add animes but I do add novels though. However I can't seem to find it on MAL, can you link it? Selphie64 you have to forgive me, I'm old and my eyesight isn't what it used to be xD And you should see what this thread looks like in NotePad (HELL!!) hehehe Wow thank you for hunting those down!! So Nominated by PinkShippuden + 3 votes are now counted! Turns out I had completly skipped tiffanyhng's post 139 (or didn't save properly maybe...) Her votes made Ao Haru Ride and Akagami no Shirayuki Hime pass! \^o^/ A few new nominees have joined the ranks as well :) |

-BlackRabbit- said: Oh I heard about 12 kingdoms! Never read it though :) However, it doesn't have a shojo nor josei tag :/ Sorry, this club is for romantic stories without a stereotyped heroine... they're so rare they deserve a club! ;) It doesn't because it's a regular novel and hence never ran in any of the manga magazine that define demographics for a given series. But I would argue it's aimed at girls since it features many varied and interesting female characters. And the main character is very easy to relate to given her personality and circumstances at the beginning of the story. (And it was written by a lady, although I know that is hardly by itself a valid argument). But I do understand if you feel circumstantial evidence isn't enough to call it shoujo/"for girls". :) |

I'm flexible (not literally, unfortunately). :) I'm willing to make an exception for it, then answer me this : is the love story prominent? Does it occupy the center stage of the story or at least is it sufficiently developped to be considered one of the central theme? If so, I'll add it :) Thanks xx |

Again no, the love story is very much a small thing and depending on how you see it, you could also argue that it's just friendship. Character growth and world building take up the biggest parts of the novels. I think I misunderstood. I assumed all shoujo was welcome regardless of genre. ^^;; |

Can I nominate Hong Sul from Cheese in the Trap, she's not particularly strong physically but mentally she's extremely clever doesn't instantly fall for the guy, doesn't go around weeping and is generally quite funny. She's no damsel in distress, does find love but doesn't turn sappy for it, she's not particularly great at cooking but she's a little sensitive bout her hair, but she's funny for it. Can i vote for Nobara Sumiyoshi from Beniiro Hero, Tachibana, Meru from Fly High, Suzuki, Hana from Gokuraku Seishun Hockey Club, Ida "Choi Yodah" Choi from He dedicated to Roses, Kyouko Hori from Horimiya, Nakaba from Remei no Arcana I don't know which of these have already been initiated or rejected but hope this helps and hope Hong Sul gets in! |

Thanks, votes counted and Hong Sul added. FYI, the refused ones are un der the "Refused List" tag (bottom of the post). I don't understand why people are so hesitant as to how this works... Are the instructions not clear? Maybe there's too much text and you read diagonally? What confused you? I want this process to as simple as possible so all input is appreciated :) Merci! |

I saw your plea for help in the club comments and of the manga listed under nominations, I've read: 1. Hana Yori Dango - Tsukushi Makino {YES} 1.be a damsel in distress Yes, unfortunately Tsukushi does play damsel in distress. She has her own moments where she shines and saves herself as well, so I'm not sure how strict the rules are for adding characters. 2.be too naive Nope, Tsukushi is very much a realist. Although she has rich guys "falling" for her, she doesn't rely on her marrying them to get her out of her family's financial situation. She even refuses to take a trip with the F4 group without earning the money herself. She also immediately realizes that she's being bullied; and that Rui likes Shizuka. Etc. Etc. 3.think cooking is the only point of her existence She makes Tsukasa a bento ONCE, and only because he was in critical condition and she thought he may die. The manga also does not make a big deal out of this. And cooking is never made into something special about Tsukushi. 4.fall in love with a guy just because he can protect her Nope~ She falls for Rui at first because of his kindness and then spends a lot of the manga trying to get away from Tsukasa, eventually falling for him through all the up and downs they face together. Although you could make a case that Tsukasa only shows him better side to Tsukushi when he rescues her and that does in part make her fall for him. So this one is both yes and no. 5.turn helpless and gooey if the guy simply talks to her Nope. She yells, punches, and kicks Tsukasa all the time. She's gentler with Rui but she still acts relatively normal. Her "love" is not exaggerated at all imo. 6.feel angsty about her outer appearance _all_the_time_ Nope. Outer appearance is never something that Tsukushi cares about. Only times it comes up is when Tsukasa is trying to dress her up with money and she rejects that. 7.cry for the smallest things Nope. She cries when people get beat up/critically hurt because of her, but that's about it. 8.gets kidnapped/abused/used easily She does get kidnapped once, but I would not call that easily. Also when she does get tricked by the evil trio early on, she retaliates rather than letting them use her easily. Pretty much only Number 1 and maybe Number 4 depending on how you look at it. Everything else is fine though. I vote for adding her to the relations, personally, but I'll leave the final decision to you. :) 2. He Dedicated to Roses - Ida Choi {YES} 1.be a damsel in distress Ida is kind of hard to place since her situation is kind of unique. Basically her parents go bankrupt and a "family friend" saves them by making them work for his household, Ida included, to cover the debt. So Ida has to put up with A LOT of shit from Mimi. She gets help from Mimi's cousin, for one, because he knows that Mimi's parents were the ones that caused the bankruptcy in the first place and uses that to backmail Mimi into being less mean to Ida. Then in the finale, Ida and her two guy friends get jumped by a group of thugs under Mimi's orders and do get saved by Naru. BUT outside that, Ida takes care of herself. 2.be too naive Nope. Ida as a child realizes her situation and develops a coping mechanism where she dresses like a guy (so nobody can recognize her and tell Mimi about it) and goes out to beat the crap out of street thugs. She also realizes pretty quick that she can't do anything against Mimi or else her parents will get thrown out and that Mimi is evil. 3.think cooking is the only point of her existence I don't think Ida ever cooks in the manhwa, but I could be wrong. The fact that I don't remember means that cooking is not important. 4.fall in love with a guy just because he can protect her Ida falls for Naru because of how deeply he cares for her. The only time he ever "protects" her is in the finale and she already confessed her love for him by then. 5.turn helpless and gooey if the guy simply talks to her She doesn't turn helpless or gooey, but she gets very emotional whenever Naru talks to her. Often nobody notices because she hides it, but the readers are informed about this, so again hard call. 6.feel angsty about her outer appearance _all_the_time_ When she's in "girl mode" she feels very angsty because Naru does not recognize her AT ALL. I would count this as against her, but the manga had a nice message at the end where Ida finally confronts Mimi and accepts both her "feminine" and "masculine" persona as one and all her anxiety and turmoil about her outer appearance goes away. So again, this is a tough call. 7.cry for the smallest things She does cry quite a bit, but her situation is pretty crappy, so again tough call. 8.gets kidnapped/abused/used easily Like I mentioned before, due to her circumstances, Ida cannot oppose Mimi at all, which results in Mimi easily abusing her. When she is in "guy mode" and at the end when she confronts Mimi as the "true Ida" (both her girl and guy persona as one), she does not take crap from no one. Ida is really hard to place. She does quite a few of the things that this club doesn't want, but only because she often cannot help it. I don't know if the fact that she does finally confront everything at the end and grows out of her "Maid Ida" Mode make things better? I thought the end message was rather nice, so I vote for her, but I fully admit she is very hard to place. 3. Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne - Maron Kusakabe {REFRAIN} 1.be a damsel in distress Okay, just letting you know, it's been awhile since I read this, so my memory is a bit fuzzy. Jeanne is a mahou shoujo, so for the most part, she is never the damsel. There is one part where I recall her getting captured by Noin, but I think she talked him into setting her free: mainly because Noin was in love with Maron's past self: Jeanne. 2.be too naive She is a bit too trusting in my opinion, but that's about it. 3.think cooking is the only point of her existence I don't remember cooking ever being mentioned. 4.fall in love with a guy just because he can protect her Honestly I don't remember why she falls for Chiaki. I do know he became Sinbad to protect her though. Make of that what you will. 5.turn helpless and gooey if the guy simply talks to her I don't ever recall her acting extra silly because of her love for Chiaki. 6.feel angsty about her outer appearance _all_the_time_ Not about her outer appearance but she is super angsty about her parents not calling her. If memory serves, they work overseas or something? Anyway, this aspect of her really annoyed me, but I fully admit this is just my opinion. 7.cry for the smallest things She doesn't cry for the smallest thing, but she does cry alone in her room because she thinks her parents hate her. 8.gets kidnapped/abused/used easily This one is debatable. She gets used by Fin pretty thoroughly, BUT I don't think Maron could have realized she was getting used IMO. I ultimately say no. I'm kind of biased since Maron rubbed me the wrong way, so I will refrain from voting. I don't know if being super angsty about things other than appearance counts against her? Outside that, she's pretty much clear of all the other tropes. 4. Kamisama Hajimemashita - Nanami Momozono {NO} 1.be a damsel in distress Yeah, she gets damselled A LOT. She's pretty weak as a "god" so Tomoe does all the heavy lifting, unfortunately. 2.be too naive She's really simple minded and trusting, so I would say yes. 3.think cooking is the only point of her existence I think only Tomoe ever cooks? I could be wrong. I've also only read about 60 chapters so far. 4.fall in love with a guy just because he can protect her It's not explicit, but Nanami does warm up to Tomoe because he protects her and takes care of her (i.e. makes her food, keeps the temple looking nice, etc). So both yes and no. 5.turn helpless and gooey if the guy simply talks to her Not to the extreme as some shoujo, but there is an element of her becoming "too shy" around Tomoe when she starts to realize her feelings. She gets over it eventually though. Although later she becomes rather depressed about Tomoe possibly still being in love with Yukiji. 6.feel angsty about her outer appearance _all_the_time_ Nope. But she is angsty about Tomoe having a human lover and acting like he never had one. 7.cry for the smallest things Nope. 8.gets kidnapped/abused/used easily Yeah, she gets kidnapped pretty easily. :/ I do like Nanami but I have to say she doesn't fit this club. She is more traditional in terms of depictions of female characters than not. So I vote against her. 5. Red Lion - Eisul Kim {YES} 1.be a damsel in distress Ahahaha, nope. She's a legend as a fighter~ 2.be too naive Nope. I don't recall her ever being overly trusting or taking things on the surface value. 3.think cooking is the only point of her existence No cooking happen as far as I can recall. 4.fall in love with a guy just because he can protect her Nope. Eisul and the canon guy don't get along at first, but they slowly become friends when he takes her home after she accidentally gets drunk on some alcoholic chocolate. They bond through his bunny mostly. And she falls for him more because she discovers he's a good person and great to talk to. 5.turn helpless and gooey if the guy simply talks to her Nope, they start out hating each other, then friends, then lover. 6.feel angsty about her outer appearance _all_the_time_ Nope. 7.cry for the smallest things I don't think she ever cried in the manga. 8.gets kidnapped/abused/used easily People try to beat her up or kidnap her, but Eisul always kicks their butts~ Totally deserves to be on this club!! >:3 Okay, more later. I need to eat now. XD |

I'd like to place a vote for Yuki Machida from Namaikizakari I saw the nomination for the manga but I didn't see the main character's name is all and my reasons and under the spoilers.
1)Be a damsel in distress If by damsel you mean "Having Sempai help her carry some heavy boxes) then yes. Other than that, no. 2)Be too naive Far from it actually. Didn't scream when Naruse grabs her boob by accident (via someone accidently pushing him), gave back the porno magazine that he intentionally dropped in her head, and doesn't flinch when he kissed her. Why? Because she knew that the dude was just doing it to get a rise out of her (He thinks it'd be interesting if she smiled or made other expressions) She does get flustered when the sempai she's crushing on gets a bit too close (like peering over her shoulder to look at a list she has) or when Naruse straight up hugged her and confessed but I think that 3)Think cooking is the only point of her existence No idea if she can cook but she's an extremely capable basketball manager and party planner (She even went as far as to confirm which resturaunts allowed outside food to be brought during the Christmas party.) 4)Falls in love with a guy just because he can protect her Nope. Does end up in love due to persistancy. 5)Turns helpless and gooey if the guy simply talks to her Nope. Talks to them normally (If anything she just sounds stern and even has a underclassman dreaming of her dominating him) 6)Feels angsty about her outer appearance _all_the_time_ Only one time and it was comparing herself to Sempai's girlfriend. 7)Cries for the smallest things Only cried after Sempai got a girlfriend and it's understandable but hasn't cried over something frivolous since. 8)Gets kidnapped/abused/used easily Hasn't happened but I think she wouldn't go down so easily. |

I'd like to nominate both Moe and Eiko from TOMODACHI NO HANASHI. Read it if you don't believe me (It's short), but I really think that both of them are the leads because the story is about their friendship and learning how to let a boyfriend into their dynamic. 1. Neither of them ever felt damsel in distress-y to me 2. Eiko's a little dense, but definitely less os than some of the gals you already have on the list. 3. No cooking. 4. LOL no. 5. Nope. They're both pretty upfront and demanding with the guys. 6. There's a bit of this from Moe, but it's more of a "I hate being so pretty that people don't care about ME" than anything else. Eiko's the "plain" one but she doesn't seem to care. 7. Didn't feel that way at all. 8. Nope |

To balance adding another entry to the long list above, I'll go through the ones I know. I don't really have time to do a detailed analysis right now. 1. Shirayuki from Atkasuki no Yona Yes, the story is her overcoming her naive princess self and becoming a good leader and ruler. 2. Suzume Yosano from Hirunaka no Ryuusei From what I remember, she probably fits the bill, but I'm too mad at her sensei right now to write a lot about this one, or really think about it. 3.Hori from Horimiya Hori's pretty much the kind of girl you had in mind when you started this club, if Teru's your mascot. Cooking might be the only thing that rules this out, but it isn't a focus. 4. Nanami Momozono from Kamisama Hajimemashita Nope, for same reasons as have been stated above. I love her, but she's pretty stereotypical. 5. Tsukimi Kurashita from Kuragehime I honestly don't know, and I don't think I've read enough to make a good judgement. The story's about her overcoming her shyness, but she's getting led around a ridiculous amount right now. 6. Wedding Go on, add her. She's hilarious in that awkward, over the top, manhwa way. |

I've no more votes I'm afraid, because though I've read some of the other nominated titles, I've somewhat mixed feelings about recommending something for inclusion that I'd hesitate to recommend for reading. :/ But, I'd like to offer for nomination: Mai Taniyama from http://myanimelist.net/manga/158/Ghost_Hunt - Who does admittedly require the odd rescue, but in all fairness, she is new in the business, does her best to fend for herself and others as she learns more, and overall is pretty tough. Christine Langton from http://myanimelist.net/manga/28077/Corset_ni_Tsubasa - At least she has not broken any rules in the first third Possibly also Chica from http://myanimelist.net/manga/41109/Usotsuki_Planet Some 19 chapters in, I've also got high hopes for Strawberry Shin from http://myanimelist.net/manga/73435/Cherry_Boy_That_Girl And though it's not given 'shoujo' as a tag on MAL (possibly because it's a webtoon), it's classified as such on Batoto, so I'm hoping exceptions are occassionally made. ^^ Also, Saiunkoku Monogatari was nominated by Poofle in post 137, not PinkShippuden in 138, so that one's also one vote short of inclusion. |

Has this thread died? Keep it up! I'd like to upvote Suzume from Hirunaka no Ryuusei, she's amazing. I just finished the manga and it ended just like I wanted it too, it was a little unexpected! I would also like to recommend Yuri (Suzuki) from Sora wa Akai Kawa no Hotori~ The story is set in a historical time and contains a lot of politics, but it does have a big focus on Yuuri's relationship with Kail. In the beginning of the story, Yuri is of course very confused, being in an unfamiliar world where she can't do a shit. However, she pulls herself together and is actually really, really strong! She's even called the goddess of war, and wants to keep fighting even when Kail tries to keep her safe. A very caring yet strong girl who's loved by the people c: http://myanimelist.net/manga/79/Sora_wa_Akai_Kawa_no_Hotori |

Downvote Alice from Heart no Kuni no Alice. She fits 1 & 8 in pretty much every route I've read to varying degrees. (the manga she's from is an adaptation of an otome game, and all the spinoff mangas adapt certain routes). She fits most of the other numbers to varying degrees as well. The only thing keeping her from being 100% stereotypical is being tsundere. |

When the link ends with pounctuation it usually doesn't work but if you end with "Power!!/" it should. chinesecartoonz - Agreed Narumi : She needs one more vote. The person who nominates a manga doesn't count as a "vote". Thank you all for your inputs! :D Sorry I took so long to update the list x_x |

But the person who nominated Kou Shuurei was Poofle in post #137, not PinkShippuden (she gave the first vote). So with that, Shuurei has the nomination and five votes, that make her a club member. :) |

Hello! I vote for Makino, Tsukushi (Hana Yori Dango). That girl got beaten up pretty bad so many times, sometimes she can be very stupid but I always admired her spirit. |

I nominate Hana Nonomura from Takane to Hana. She fits the bill – and she goes against the stereotype, however the manga isn’t completed, but I highly doubt she will change in the future. |

I JUST WANNA SAY I ALSO vote for Moe from Tomodachi no Hanashi which is DEFINITELY not your stereotypical shoujo at ALL. It has really realistic characters and relationships and a focus on female friendships and oh gosh I have so many feelings everyone should read it and I'm glad it was nominated!!/rant More votes for: Sei Tominaga from Kaze Hikaru Yuri Suzuki from Sora wa Akain Kawa no Hotori Chiemi Yusa from Junai Tokkou Taichou I'm also gonna put [http://myanimelist.net/character/28621/Anise] Anise from Ciper out there because I think she was pretty kickass and I don't remember her doing anything problematic but I also read it a while ago so I encourage discourse lol |

I vote for Machida, Yuki from Namaikizakari (21) Does Sengoku Mei from Mizutama Honey Boy count? She isn't a stereotypic character because she is a strong female. It's like the roles of the female mc and male mc were switched, which is quite interesting imo |
