Wow this is truly One of The Greatest if not THE Greatest manga of all time!!

Didn't expect that ending i was 100% sure that they're gonna lose to Sannoh but this plot twist was amazing.
tho i wanted to see them play against that OP first year student or play a rematch against Kainan before their game against Sannoh.

I didn't get the point of all that build up for the OP first year student just to be completely forgotten, was it supposed to mean that he beat Kainan in the finals and won the Nationals?

All in all, their match against Sannoh was fuckin LEGENDARY especially those last 5 minutes goddamm that shit was pure greatness. and that last point OH MY FUCKIN GOD!!!! Been waiting YEARS to see that shit.

and before i end this, i gotta say this is The Greatest High-Five/Panel of All Time!!!

Fuckin Greatness, Thank You Takehiko-sensei for this Legendary Shit!!!!! 11/10

Honestly I've seen a ton of sports anime and I have to say. Slam Dunk is by far the greatest I've ever seen/read. The final match kept me on the edge of my chair the entire time. The progression, story and characters were all great.

I must say I'd loved it if we had gotten more out of this story. Seeing how it ends with Rukawa and Sakuragi just in their Sophmore year and all. Having unresolved stuff like Sakuragi's love for Haruko.

HOWEVER a big however. This series ended on the highest note you can possibly end as a series in general. Just for that fact I'm okay with the ending. I'll probably hope and pray for more Slam Dunk for the rest of my life but I'm satisfied.

This show/manga was masterpiece. 10/10

What a way to end a great story. I was actually surprised when I realised that it was getting close to the ending of the manga and they were still playing against Sannoh. I don't know why he decided to end the story where he did. There was definitely potential with other teams such as Meihou and the op first year, having a possible rematch with Kainan, and even seeing the abilities of Atsushi that were hinted at. The match against Sannoh however, was unpredictable. I thought that he was going to do a f*** you, and make Shohoku lose, but I'm pleased with the end result.

Also, I thought Mitsui was a third year? Did he not graduate or something? Lol.

Damn, they couldn't recover for the next round and they lost.
Sakuragi is trying to fix his back.
But why is this the end for Slam Dunk???
Inoue-sensei, please do something about it!
We need to see what happens next!

If I remember correctly, he decided to repeat his third year and keep playing with a team because that's the only way he can get a scholarship since (according to him) he isn't as smart as Akagi to obtain one through academics.

Well, I knew some spoilers before I finished reading (Hanamichi was going to get hurt/ Hanamichi realized he really wants to play basketball/ Rukawa would enter in the Japan team/ They would lose in the third game...

But at the same time, this last game was awesome!!

I was really anxious to see Rukawa and Hanamichi getting along well, we can just imagine they became a great pair.

And we have to believe Hanamichi got really good in Basketball and eventually he became Haruko's boyfriend

And I really think Hanamichi was kind of the heart/spirit of team (Akagi was the heart also). I want to believe that Hanamichi in his third year became captain (I really think he has the spirit to be captain of the team).

And It was really nice to see Akagi trusting and depending on Hanamichi, they really liked one another.

This team was great and it would be really hard to substitute, but of course I would like to have a sequence, and see Shouhoku win the championship one year.

Problem with this chapter: it was so rushed!! I didn't understand a lot of stuff (Was mitsui in the team also??, there was a guy that looked like him playing with Ryota...). A lot of people said here all that buildup about other teams for nothing?? It just didn't feel like Inoue was going to finish the manga in that part, I really don't understand his intentions...

This is really an amazing manga. Definitely my favourite sports manga.

The best part really is the characters. All of them are likeable and they all feel very real and relatable. I also like how nobody was really left behind, they all got their time to shine. A small detail that really did a lot for me was that Sakuragi actually had a group of friends at the start of the story. It's very common in manga that the main character get all of his/her relationships within the story rather than already having some established ones.

I have never played or even watched a single game of basketball. It does really help that Sakuragi never really learns the rules and keeps fouling, since that keeps him relatable to people like me all throughout the story.

The art is of course also excellent, especially in the later volumes.

Overall, this is a really fun and exciting manga with a lot of heart. I can see why both it and Inoue is so well regarded.

11/10 for this manga!!!
I think is one of the best sports manga, becaue there are of all, action, love and smiles!!!
It´s a sad that end here, because Shohoku deserved win Kainan in the final, but the "money" world is the boss, and this end here, wonderfully, but a point of sad!!!

Hanamichi Sakuragi is a great character, how person (draw) and personality, very nice!!!

Slam Dunk is a great manga. The artwork is just incredible, even if it's published from 1990-1996, 2 decades ago. It's so well illustrated it bested most of the modern sports manga I'd come across. Inoue also did a incredible job in heightening excitement, he uses 'silent' panels, panel with no narration/words to bring out tension. This is even for more so for the last few chapters of Sannoh vs Shohoku match.

I, for one, was not that keen of a sequence or a continuation. Like everyone else, I initially felt a little disappointed with regards to the build-up against the OP first-year student, Hiroshi Morishige, also dubbed as the future star Japan first witnessed from the national tournament. It's also interesting to note that Meihou is on the opposite site of the tournament bracket, hence, it's implied that they were first. Sannoh, Aiwa, Kainan ( came in 2nd ), Toyotama were on the same side with Shohoku. It's a pity because I think the eng scanlation available online didn't bother to translate the tournament bracket in the manga and also made a few noticeable error while translating from chinese to english. Still, they did a great job bringing this masterpiece to the western audience.

With regards to why Shohoku lost so badly to Aiwa during the 3rd round, the fact that they used up every single arsenal they had, topped with going over their limitations against Sannoh , they were spent mentally and physically. The match against Sannoh was just 1 day after their game with Run-and-Gun specialist Toyotama. We can also assume Shohoku play and lost the game with Aiwa the very next day, without Mitsui Hisashi and of course Sakuragi. Granted Aiwa wasn't not exactly the top-tier, but at the very least, they were still top 4 based on previous national tournament, the same as Kainan. Since Kainan got 2nd in this year tournament, it shows Aiwa either lost to them or fail to face them. This means that Shohoku stood a far better chance had they faced Aiwa with their full-strength, especially since Shohoku vs Kainan was a close affair and Sakuragi as well as Shohoku has improved leaps and bounds after the regional qualification.

The series ended on the highest possible note, the theme and motive wasn't to crown Shohoku champions. Instead, it was to show the readers that with unwavering belief, perseverance this team, a no-namer in the basketball scene, can take down the 3-time champions ( also rumoured to be the strongest squad assembled in Sannoh's 20 years history ). What's more remarkable was Shohoku was forced to play catch-up twice. It's gratifying for the readers because we always knew Shohoku has potential. This match is legendary in the history of manga.

It has been almost a decade since I finished reading this manga, I'll end the post with this video.

Enjoy.

So I actually was equally as disappointed about no confrontation with Morishige, but he actually doesn't win the finals. Meihou Tech loses Daiei Gakuen in the quarterfinals. That's just from the Slam Dunk wiki, but I'm sure if you dug you could find the original source for that.

Damn, you're right.

I assumed Meihou won because of how strong they were looking compare to Daiei Gakuen.

Thanks for the info.

Mitsui is still on the team, Akagi and Megane-Kun left to focus on their college entrance exams, that chapter is probably less than two months after the tournament, also there is still the Winter Tournament at the end of the year, and Mitsui can still play it, even though he's a senior.

I feel like Mitsui should've failed his second year in highschool so he would still be a sophomore by the time Rukawa and Hanamichi entered highschool, he was a gangleader for christ's sake, they don't have time to study.

The final game vs Sannoh was one of the most captivating reads I’ve had in a while, not to say the rest of this manga wasn’t fantastic. Such a great ending too, Haruko x Sakuragi is pretty much confirmed, you can tell she fell for him in the end even if we got no actual confession or kiss, she will be waiting for him.. I’m sure a lot of people probably wanted more in the romance department, but I’m not disappointed at all.

I would have liked to see a bit more of what happened after Sakuragi’s rehabilitation, but excellent manga nonetheless and the best sports manga I’ve ever read. 9/10

As a fan of Takehiko Inoue, Slam Dunk and Vagabond are truly masterpieces. As someone who was skeptical of reading a sports manga, I ended up thoroughly enjoying this manga. Loved Sakuragi, the tensai and the rest of the team. The final game was a tribute to the true strength that shohoku possessed. Overall, one of the best sports mangas I read.

Damn, such a good ending, honestly... If Shohoku just won the tournament it would've been pretty bs if you think about it, the author did it flawlessly.
And I do think that he hinted a relationship between Haruko and Sakuragi on that "I love it" scene and in those panels:

In most cases, the MAL Average Scores don't mean anything, here is a question: were the works made before 2000 all shit?
Why are they so damn scarce in the Top 50? Think about how MAL is quite literally a filtered amount of the Anime fanbase.

Here's a timeline of the Top 15 in which you can check that, almost always, the scores are affected by the freshness, popularity and other factors that have nothing to do with quality.

I completed the tv series a few years ago. The anime was great; I really enjoyed it!

Last week I decided to continue the series from the manga. (So I started reading from chapter 185 to 276)

It was an amazing experience! The art was incredible and that last match was sooo exciting !. I had a blast reading it.

I really wish there were more chapters:( but mangaka wanted to leave the rest of the story to our imagination I think.

Extending the story is now up to the reader's imagination and I think Inoue ended every the story at a good spot. I'm so tempted to pick up a pair of 2016 1's for the sake of Sakuragi hehe

So much emotion, one of the best manga as well as sports manga I ever witnessed. Every character was well-developed, meet each other and played together to become a close-knit team, full of youthful enthusiasm. The last game with Sannoh was so intense, I have never once in my life howled, worried, nervous, then filled with joy when a basketball team won in a manga. Quite sad for Sakuragi is not able to play for a period of time but I'm glad Shohoku finally achieve their dream

9.5/10 if only the ending were more expanded and complete (I feel like 1 chapter for the ending is too rushed, even with the "10 days after" one-shot), And yes this is better than Vagabond, imo

From his interview, he said that when he started slam dunk he already plan to end it after sannoh game. His original plan is for them to lost in sannoh, but the editorial department of jump didn't agree with him which cause some tension.

Interhigh winner is Daiei Gakuen (osaka). This school is based on a real life school that won the interhigh.
