Crest of the Stars (not that great).

If you like comedy and want to see students become involved with a yakuza like teacher, then go watch Great Teacher Onizuka. It gives a microcosmic view of high school students compared to the grand scale of LotGH.

Seikai series wasn't supposed to be grand epic scale story. It was supposed to be Romantical relationship in space.

Watch any "Good" old classic anime. MS Gundam 0079, Hokuto no Ken, Macross, Rose of Versailles, Space captain Harlock, anything. You will find more and more awesome stories in them

Though if you want more recent anime, Monster might fit the shoes

Gundam 0079 and Zeta Gundam are good series and deserve to be seen moreover there are many interesting spin off like 08th MS Team, War in the Pocket or Igloo which deepen the story.
Even though the characters and the story are not as great and deep as Logh's, Gundam offers a really broad and detailled picture of the war between Zeon and the Earth Federation.

Terra E is an other good space opera with great good characters.

Finally you can watch the prequels of LoGH. ;)

"the legend ends, History begins"

an awesome end to an awesome anime
I really don't know what to say...I'm speechless
I'm really glad that I got to watch this & it defiantly deserves the top rank here
but I'm kinda sure that I will not see an anime as epic as this one..

The truth comes out!

(STFU, it had to be done. Wherever needed, I will personally take responsibility for being the lamest of dorks and killing the mood.)

I loved that scene in the end. Felix's taking after Reuental already.
Is it weird that I want a bonus episode just to watch Mittermeyer battling floods with faithful wife and child at his side as he races death to the Kaiser?
It irks me that they didn't just make Hilda Empress-as per the credit Reinhard gave her and what she's done already, you just KNOW she's going to be the best governor the universe has ever seen. And with the awesome of Mittermeyer, the unexpected awesome of Annerose, and the. . .I-guess-not-hate-able presence of Julian, the universe can't be that lonely. I'm grateful just for Poplan and Attenborough surviving to bicker another day.

And I ALSO totally thought that Reinhard was being slowly poisoned! Except when they randomly brought in Marika, I thought they'd save the attempted-Kircheis-clone's innocence by having her be some Terraist bitch. Then they made her Kesler's girlfriend, and the mysterious illness subplot lost me. Some of the loose ends were fitting, others could have been dealt with much more eloquently.

Until I find another cool series, I'll just have to suffice my daily awesome with fantasies of Schumaher and Poplan as comrades of space piracy, someday arriving in the Leiji-verse. . .

Seriously, just dont bother watching anything else after this, except for some sporadic Ghibli, Production I.G or Studio 4C stuff. I've dropped so many modern shows since watching LotGH, because nothing else compares.

Personally I value even more about tastes after finised watching this. Nowadays I'm more about re-watching old stuff(Leijiverse, Macross franchise, Gundam stuff before 2000, Hokuto no Ken, Versailles, etc). That's not to say new stuff isn't interesting though. All of them still have some qualities in it. Seriously if you compare LoGH to any anime, you might stop watching anime and watch Babylon 5 instead.

You know, I just haven't had this problem yet. I don't even know why people try to compare this show with anything else, there is nothing else like it. Now, don't get me wrong, that doesn't mean it is better than any other anime I've seen. In fact, watching this anime doesn't make any other 10, 9, or even 8 I've seen any worse.

You cant not compare, it's the nature of being human to contrast and compare everything in life, whether you're aware of it or not you are comparing things all the time. The fact is, when I watch an anime, it is automatically compared to every other anime I've ever seen, and so far everything is falling short of LotGH. Obviously I'm not going to compare LotGH with Azumanga Daioh genre-wise, but even in simple storytelling terms I havent seen anything remotely on the level of LotGH since watching it.

Life is too short to spend hours and hours watching mediocre shows, so I should thank LotGH for raising the bar so high that I wont waste hours of my life on drek. Because my expectations of what to expect from a story, in the anime medium, has been strengthened thanks to this show. It's not like there arent going to be shows on the level of LotGH or better, but LotGH has become a good filter for me, saving me a lot of time.

I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the Anime dream.

I have a dream that one day anime will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all anime OVAs are created equal."

I have a dream that one day in the red light districts of Akihabara the sons of former otaku and the sons of former otaku's parents will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the forums of Code Geass R2, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my top four favourites anime will one day live in a website where they will not be judged by the color of their animation but by the content of their story.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day the forums of MAL, whose mods' lips are presently dripping with the words of interposition and nullification, will be transformed into a situation where little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls and walk together as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day every forum shall be exalted, every shonen and hentai shall be made low, the rough manga scanalations will be made plain, and the crooked subs will be made straight, and the glory of the Legend of the Galactic Heroes shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

Do you not think that your choice of rhetoric to imitate is possibly a tad ironic in view of the presentation of Louis Mashengo, Beatnik? Yang's infamous "What is that?" moments and the fact that Louis' relationship with Julian is not very far from master and slave makes your choice of Martin Luther King's speech a rather curious one!

Did Citizen Kane make Monty Python's The Holy Grail a bad movie? I say not.

Did Russell make Nietzsche a bad philosopher? I say not.

Did Faulkner make Nabokov a bad writer? I say not.

Did Witches make Confession worse? By no means.

For they cannot be compared completely; they are too different. LoGH is of a particular kind alone - it excels at a very specific type of story. It is not abstract, so comparing it with more abstract art is not fruitful. It is not a comedy, so comparing it with comedies miss the salient points of either. (Though if LoGH is funnier than a comedy, then we would be wise to eschew it.) LoGH is of a particular kind; and while triumping in sheer craftsmanship over most anime and certainly most normal TV series for that matter, there are entirely different things to enjoy and find good or bad which LoGH is irrelevant to, for it never ever touches upon it.

LoGH could never be good or bad at what it never tried to do. Theefore even a mediocre attempt at something LoGH did not try its perfect, very sexy, and strong hands at, would be worth some time, perhaps.

LoGH could only possibly have spoiled anime if anime at large was the same kind of story as LoGH was, and, however sad or joyous this may be, it is not the case.

tl;dr LoGH only ruined space opera. But boy did it do a good job ruining it.

But I think you're sidestepping my point entirely. The point is that in a list of 'Best Movies Ever' or whatever, one of those movies is going to be on top or below the other. It's comparison, right? Fair has nothing to do with it. Everything is compared all the time, like I said, whether you're aware of it or not.

Your post is only valid for the idea of comparing things of different genres, but like I said, the problem I'm personally having is related to the entire medium of anime, not the space opera genre specifically.

"Dude, what's the best anime you ever seen?"
"LotGH."

Bam. There you go. Hundreds of anime of different genres and style, all compared instantly, with one anime on top.

"What's better, LotGH or Lucky Star?"
"Better at what?"
"Story."
"LotGH."

A specific comparison, thus not entirely fair, as Lucky Star had other priorities than story, etc.

So my final point is that LotGH is a vast combination of many factors that it excels at each and every time, from story to direction to music, it comes out on top in every aspect. So for me it's hard to muster up the concentration to keep watching a show that not only doesnt match LotGH's level of quality in any of those aspects, let alone all of them, but a show that doesnt even fucking try to excel. I'm of course talking about shitty modern shows that are more concerned with fanservice, current (moe) trends, and shit like that.

My bar for story and characters had already been set to ungodly high standards by Monster. As good as LoGH was, I don't think it raised those expectations any higher.

My biggest problem at the moment is that there aren't any anime trying to be LoGH or Monster. Sure, there's good anime being prodcued, but no anime of the same type, none of the same scale. I think that might be contributing to the "LoGH has ruined anime for me"-syndrome. Everyone who watches LoGH wants more of the same, but there just isn't any available.

And holy shit 55 out of 55 people loved the last episode. Proof that anyone who actually watches the series all the way through loves it? I think so.

You know, I need to get round to watching Monster. I've held off on it for ages because I've already read the manga and know it's awesome, but as I'm in an anime draught* right now watching it might be just what I need.

* I've forgotten how to spell this word.

I think you've made a good point though naikou, basically LotGh spoils us with a massive ensemble cast, and there arent many of those in anime. I think there was a thread a while back about anime that have large cast, but people were throwing out stuff like Naruto and One Piece which isnt what I'd call ensemble at all, even if anime like that does technically just about scrape past the definition.

Scale is a big part of LotGH's charm, and an extension of that is: immersiveness. Scale + ensemble = immersed in fictional full-functioning world with lots of attention to detail.

When Yang died, I wanted this series to end soon. But, to my amazement this awesome story didn't become weak. So many unique characters, that I will never forget. Seeing Reinhard slowly dieing was quite painful to me, but still, he was surrounded by the people who loved him and respected him the most.

Did I just watch one of the greatest shows ever? - I guess, I did.
I feel kind of sorry I finished it so fast. But, I must say, it was worth it's 110 series.

Just remember, young grasshopper: true enlightenment cannot be gained by the narrow vision. It would seem to me that one should not discard the "mediocre" so readily, when it is through that lens that you call LOGH the greatest of them all in the first place.

First of all, I'd like to thank God for sending me in an era when lotgh was made and subbed, and for letting me live to this day. I really appreciate that. And second, I'd like to thank my parents for bringing me to this world and sending me to school so I could learn english (its not my first, nor my second language). Although I would've appreciated it a bit more had they taught me japanese; it would've been easier to watch all those episodes, because all that reading and listening and watching at the same time really takes a toll on me (this is especially true for lotgh). Third, I'd like to thank Madhouse, Artland and kitty house (or whatever) for making lotgh possible. The author (yoshiki tanaki) and the director (noboru Ishigura) and the whole team behind the anime deserve special praise (including the VAs, of course). We all love you very much, and I personally feel indebted to you for making such a classic masterpiece possible. I also thank Central-anime from the bottom of my heart. Thanks a ton for making lotgh possible for the so called 'literate' non-jap english speaking fans. And then I'd like to thank Beatnik for his insightful and articulate review, which is an accurate (and convincing) critique of the whole series. His review is part of the reason that I put this on my wish list. I also thank the fans for shamelessly advertising the series on MAL; although I disapprove of it normally, but being an open minded person (oh I'm so awesome!), I didn't react the same way as some MAL trolls did and decided to give the series a fair shot with a neutral unbiased mindset. Kudos to the fans.

I was dreading this moment ever since I started watching lotgh about 6 months ago. And now I've finished the whole series, watched the prequel movies and the first prequel series. Only spiral labyrinth remains. This feeling is rare...it doesn't happen too often, and sometimes I forget it exist. Its the same feeling I felt when I finished the last page of the lord of the rings, the hobbit and a wizard of earthsea. And its the same feeling I got when I finished shows like samurai champloo, fma, death note, monster etc, only this is on a much larger scale. Its finally over, and I just wish i could forget it all and go through it again and again and again. But I cant....

PS: I hated oberstein throughout the series, blaming him for Kircheis' death. Almost suspected that he would cause harm to Reinhard. But the last episode just tore down all the negative feelings I had for him and built up this wall of respect for him. Oberstein FTW

*end boring rant*

Ah, it's all over. I have no major complaints about the series and fully enjoyed it from the end of the first season and on. Beautiful~

Oberstein's death felt a little cheap at first, but it's actually fitting seeing as Reinhard, the man who he pledged to follow in the beginning, has passed on as well. I really liked Oberstein since he was first introduced, shame he had so little screen time though.

I never liked Truhint, but I felt sorry for him when I learned of his true intentions. And poor old Oberstein! :( Again, LotGH keeps true to its trend as both good and evil are realized in each character.

By now, it seems that Karin has stolen Julian from little Charlotte ><

My, what a wonderful line. Loved the ending scene, too

This series gets a 10/10 from me. It's hardly perfect, but perfect is too much to ask for. LotGH sets the bar, and until I find a superior anime, it will remain my high standard.

Bitter irony is what sticks out with Julian and Karin speaking of what it finally got them. For the autonomy of a star system in the fringe required so much extremely gruesome death, loss of great people, but especially the loss of Yang Wenli. Can't think of a character death which would still effect me even to the last episode. It still will, considering what this death represents and how it reflects on the way the world works.

Reinhard's passing was the most suitable for him and left few regrets hence why I didn't shed more than a few tears for him.

And it's in my opinion that a 10 shouldn't reflect perfection, which is a myth, as it should reflect a masterpiece which is what this series is.

the legend ends and history begins.....that was a beautiful masterpiece....

I hated Truniht....when he died I was like.....F*** yeah Truhnit's dead.....maybe because he's like one of those politicians here in our country that's so corrupt....I hated him so.....

but I began liking Oberstein....a man despised by all...but still remains faithful to the empire and to reinhard....and at the time of his death he is still thinking about the empire.......I have so much respect for him now.....and to reinhard and yang too.....

...rNr...

Well, I finally made it to the end. So much suffering, but it appears that hope will spring from the sea of blood after all.

What a journey it was. I won't write up extensive thoughts on the series here, except that I have the burning desire to read the original novels this was based on as well as everything else the original author wrote. It's not perfect, and doesn't displace my favorite anime series, but it deserves high praise for seeing its large ambitions though successfully.

meh...this show ended with S3 as far as I'm concerned...solid 8/10. Worth the watch, but no where near worth the hype

well I'd never say that something I think deserves an 8 and is on the top anime list is over hyped. If I'm giving something an 8 then it isn't hard to imagine people going crazy over it. durarara, Baccano, Girl who leapt through time, fullmetal alchemist brotherhood, they're all shows I've given an 8 and I'm happy to see them in the top anime list.
Although I do agree that season 3 was better, but season 4 was better than the first 2 in my book. Thematically, all the events since yang's death made a lot of sense, including all those character deaths. And the last episode is among the best finale's I've seen yet.
"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

I will go as far as saying this show is one of the greatest works of art man has ever produced. Beautiful story, beautiful characters, beautiful ending, beautiful everything. Nothing will ever compare.

Wow
I have never cried watching any media, may it be series, movies, theatres...
But the last episode of Legend of the Galactic Heroes actually did make me drop tears.

About the whole anime. Story has no equivalents what so ever. It was so detailed, long, original, unique throughout those 110 episode, that you can really not compare it to anything else. Each character whose name you can remember surpasses the main characters of the majority of anime. The development is just outstanding.

I even downgraded a number of anime after completing this.

I don't think my writing skills are appropriate for writing anything more about LotGH. So I won't... For now...
No sig :(

I concur with most of the posts, it is one of the greatest, if not THE greatest anime I've ever seen. Definitely the one with the best plot, characters and dialogue.
I downgraded 80% of my list in comparison to LOGH so I can feel at ease..

Also I'm looking VERY much forward to the Gaiden Series, otherwise the end would have struck me even harder..

Just finished it. Quite a great series but they could have made the opposition ( Free Planet Alliance ) more interesting, since the start of the series it's been quite a lopsided battle, great series and ending anyway.
Doubt Doubt.
