THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
So Oberstein is still around. It looks like Hildegard is the new counterbalance to him. She doesn't have as much sway as Sieg did so it she'll probably have a harder time getting him to act responsibly.

Something fishy looks like it's going on behind the scenes. When the admirals were discussing Reinhard's new adjutant their biggest shock was the fact that Oberstein is meekly accepting Commodore Streit taking the post. Even if his opinions are ignored, Oberstein has never been afraid to voice them. I'm getting a nagging suspicion that he may be plotting something.

Delving into Mittermeyer and Ruental's past provided an interesting look at what shaped the lives of both men. I don't see where it's fitting in the grand scheme of things at this time though.

I liked watching the past of Mittermayer and Ruental a lot this episode. Although I wonder what all the backdoor politics that is going around will affect the future episodes. Phezzan is still doing its shady dealings and plannings.

Ah, the Oberstein hast returned. That man's quite a schemer, I only hope we get to see what happens soon considering all he let slip past him.

Other than that, I enjoyed and was saddened seeing Wolfgang's and Reuenthal's pasts this episode. I understand what Reuenthal went through in his youth, but he needs to give love a second chance. Seeing Wolfgang getting married was something I wasn't planning on seeing, but congratulations to him.

D'aww, Wolfie's flashback was so cute. Especially when his father cheered him on from the greenhouse.

That's what I think, too. Oberstein is one sneaky bastard. I bet he's going to use the dog somehow, too xD
I really like both Reuenthal and Mittermeyer, but I just...miss Kircheis ;__;

Better character development than Kircheis and Reinhard in the first season, better animation than the first season, Reinhard seems a bit more nuanced than in the first season, overall I've got a really good feeling about this second season...

am i the only one who's having a rough time searching for the episode discussion thread every time i finish an episode?:)

no but seriously, mittermeyer's story was awesome, that's why character development matters that much

Mittermeyer reminds me of Yang a little

so 5/5,character development episodes never fail :)

Iad had the same difficulties finding the Discussion Threads ^^.

And I agree, Mittermeyer is almost the most Yang-ish person on Reinhards side.
I probably regret this post by now.

I really like Mittermeyer. He's almost as good a person as Kircheis, if less thoughtful, and kind of a beast soldier.
Reuenthal is of course epic. He has the aura of an Emperor, and probably would be if he were born a generation later.

Oberstein had some pretty understated characterization in this episode. Putting aside a soulless bastard like him walking through night for dog food, he's being meek apparently. I guess he's easing up on the "shadow" until Hilda grows influential enough to become a new "light" for Reinhard.

Reuenthal was epic here. His story truly touched me.
I always felt that he was going for the top, but it's good to know how beautiful his friendship with Mittermeyer is.
Also aww, Mittermeyer's past >.<

And Oberstein...I can't trust this guy, but I can't hate him either.

A flashback within a flashback? Loghception?

I'm going to have to watch the second half of this episode again -- the politics of the Empire are intricately nuanced.

Good to see the background of Mittermeyer and Reuental. The story between Mittermeyer and Eva XDDD.

Still really sad that Kircheis died :((.

Surprised that Oberstein is taking care of a stray dog. Good to know that he has some compassion in him. I'm starting to not hate him as much now.

I liked the character development of the two twin admirals. The flashbacks were very interesting and gave each of them a good character. This series has the amazing ability to introduce and keep you invested in so many different characters-its insane!

After watching this episode i must say the show is very unique in its own way. It provides us viewers with a view point to almost anyone, anything that is related to the story. The show cares to the detail, whether it be main or supporting characters, everyone has their own role to play, like a cogwheel of a clock. This makes the show more diverse in its setting and scale.

Not very good; nested flashbacks aren’t my favourite thing. But necessary to move everyone into the right places. I also can’t help but wonder if Oskar might be interested in his colleague’s Meyer Wiener. I don’t ship it, though, mostly because Von Reuenthal’s upbringing was horrific and would play into psychological ideas of homosexuality as a mental disorder, which had been largely discredited even by the time Tanaka wrote the LotGH novels.

We finally got 2 backstories of the High Admiral
They're like the opposite person, but somehow become best friends
Maybe because they have same goal despite of different backgrounds

And now the real war starts again
I'm surely Free Alliance Planets or Yang's side will win
Otherwise there won't be a balance at all, Yang's side will be wiped out so fast
Anyway I'm rooting for Yang

Kircheis can't be replaced, he was the only one who could temper Reinhard(o)-sama ;_;

but nonetheless, the backstories for Mittermeyer and Reuenthal were pretty great, like those two a lot.

2021 Rewatch

At first Reinhard appears to show mercy to Oppenheimer. Reinhard takes swift action on bribery attempts. Basically telling Oppenheimer that he's useless, compared to Streit. Consoling the strands of hair that belonged to Kircheis...

First we get Wolfgang Mittermeyer/Sturm Wolf's backstory. Fumbled buying a gift, his gardening father rooting for him in the distance to confess his love/propose to Eva.

Then we get the much darker backstory of Oskar von Reuenthal, born with heterochromia...a very unfortunate thing to have in an empire filled with discrimination. The cause behind it is quiet fanciful (because his mother was thinking of a brown eyed man). But the result is still very tragic; having his eye about to be gouged out, his mother committing suicide and his drunken father becoming distant. Mittermeyer keeps quiet about Reuenthal's story as a good friend should.

Really great Oscar and Mittermeyer flashbacks, so glad to see them getting well deserved development and attention, they seem to be a pretty opposite but amazing duo.

Rubinsky trying to side with empire is definitely part of bigger plan that he hopes would succeed, but hopefully Logenheim will be able to see trough this or maybe Oberstein will get involved in it some way.

Great episode, great development of characters and rising tension
