The wars referenced are decades apart, which gives the background a different feel. For me, that took some adjustment while watching. The update to technology and trends didn't bother me as much.

afaik, there are 2 chapters in the manga that havent been adapted into anime, and a few characters that are not in the anime.

from what I've heard the manga spends more time touching on ash's time as a young man in prison in new York at the height of the aids epidemic and generally touches on the aids epidemic more

Not really, manga is just most depressing since there is clearly said what had happened to one character. You know, when it comes to anime, we can still live with idea someone saved them😅

quite a bit, actually. I'll try to explain with no spoilers. first of all, time period changes like the addition of cellphones in the anime. Charlie and Nadia play slightly larger roles in the manga, slurs are used more commonly ( product of it's time unfortunately), AIDS is mentioned, and Eijis character is alot less passive and more hilarious. honestly I wish they kept in more of Eiji making fun of/ teasing Ash. I can recall a joke with Eiji telling Ash to see a gynaecologist because of low blood pressure, if I can remember correctly ( don't quote me, it's been a while.) there is also the side stories that weren't adapted, like garden of light that reviews a certain characters fate. also in the final scene a important piece of dialogue was cut regarding this, if you know what I mean.

Read these two from the last vol (19)
"Angel Eyes" and then "Garden of Light".
Except this you won't miss anything big even if you don't read the full manga
