I've seen some mixed reactions to this remake on Twitter with some saying the original's better, while others say that this one's better. Most of these however haven't read the original light novels. For any light novel readers who have also seen both versions of the show, which one is better so far?

People who complain on Twitter are clowns. Don't take them ever seriously. As far as i know the 1st Episode of the remake is a proper adaptation of the begin of the Novel. The OG Anime had a female character that wasn't in the novels. Apart from that the Animation, Art Quality and Direction is MUCH better in the remake.

its funny people complain that, cause the director of the original is the one directing this remake. Maybe, the art style might look different and there might be some changes in the adaptation, but what I dont understand is, how are people comparing a 26 episode original anime with an ongoing series that has only 1 episode as of now and calling it good/bad?

Personally I prefer the older art style and opening/ending but that’s all personally preference but so far it’s better yeah.

Easy, you watch the first episodes of both and make the comparison. The remake has underwhelming performance.

I heard that the remake version is more faithful to the original source material.

Honestly there are pros and cons to both the original anime and the remake so far.

It seems the remake will be more faithful to the Light Novels, as the original anime took some liberties and skipped some content.

Most who watched the original (including myself) will say that the overall quality of the art and the adaptation of the remake itself is inferior to the original anime. However, it is EXTREMELY hard to objectively judge when nostalgia plays such a huge factor, so at this point I can’t fairly judge which is better overall.

The remake gives Holo slightly bigger boobs, which some would say is a plus, and some would say is a minus.

What IS a minus though is the fact that the original anime had Holo with Barbie Doll anatomy (nude figure with no nipples) and the remake has hair covering her chest, making it needlessly far more suggestive and sexual than the original anime was, especially when you combine it with the bigger boobs, regardless of whether that was the intention or not.

All I can say is that I look forward to watching this remake and seeing how it plays out.
I wish more people watched Chobits.

After one episode? Can’t tell. But I do think that, so far, this rendition is a bit closer to the feel of the LN. The only thing that isn’t there is Holo being haughty about “I’m the wise wolf.” She is constantly reminding Lawrence in the LN out of self-pride. It may seem like a small thing, but her arrogance and pride showed through it and it was a big part of her character. Again, one episode, this is something she does over stretches of time, so we’ll see. That said, I do suspect this one will be better than the original.

Also, preferences aside: the art style is a lot closer to how it really looks, so there’s that. I actually like this one better

Just from Ep 1 alone it's already more faithful. The designs are close to what they were intended to be and a major point in ep 1 is that Yarei is there. In the original anime, he was replaced by Roberta but in the LN Yarei is the merchant.
Oh god who are you people?

LN reader here, completely caught up to the latest release. The first episode really blew it out of the of the water in terms of expectations. If they keep this up I can see it being basically the definitive adaptation of the series.

Extremely minor altercations compared to the source, I love the new ED, only the OP is a small downgrade from the original’s, but I think it will grow on me. Kevin Penkin is really setting the mood well with his soundrrack and I have no gripes with the new art style or animations really.

Overall any doubts as a long time fan were quelled with the first episode and I’m very glad it wasn’t as divisive as I thought it would be. I was worried the core fandom would be shaken and we’d have a “The Last Jedi” situation on our hands, I would’ve been devastated.

this more closely follows the LN then the previous one that changed and altered a lot of characters.
"among monsters and humans, there are only two types.
Those who undergo suffering and spread it to others. And those who undergo suffering and avoid giving it to others." -Alice
“Beauty is no quality in things themselves: It exists merely in the mind which contemplates them; and each mind perceives a different beauty.” David Hume
“Evil is created when someone gives up on someone else. It appears when everyone gives up on someone as a lost cause and removes their path to salvation. Once they are cut off from everyone else, they become evil.” -Othinus

@_Yotsugi_ I like the original art better too but I'm an OG anime fan so these aesthetics suit me better than the new styles

I'm considering holding off on the series until I hear what the dub will sound like. Spice and Wolf was the first time I ever read a light novel because I loved these two so much, however that meant the dub was literally the voices I used for hundreds of hours of reading, because Holo and Lawrence were nailed

If the dub comes out at a reasonable time period, I'll probably wait until the dub to see if it's worth restructuring my voice recognition for the series

Performance of what? It’s higher quality by every metric.

Why is it better to pretend she has no nipples? I don’t get it. Unless she canonically has no nipples,
But that sounds stupid.

I finished the original Spice and Wolf about 2 years ago now, and honestly I think the complaints are people drowning in their own nostalgia. The character animation is cleaner, the music is impressive, and the direction feels more intentional in its shot choices. I think the one thing the original has over this adaptation is background art (it’s hard to beat the old 2000s aesthetic) and maybe color design/tone depending on your preference, but I feel like that’s still a bit subjective. Obviously this is only one episode, so it could go downhill really fast, but I think this is a great place for new fans to start.

Idk since it's only been ep 1 but the art style in the original looks better for me, and as for the characters design, I prefer holo in original and Lawrence in this remake, lastly I think the ost in this remake is already better than the original imo.

I watched the original 3 or 4 times it was my first anime that I became obsessed with, bought and read the LNs, bought the manga. Of course I am nostalgic about the artstyle and the general atmosphere of the original, and not a fan of the CGI that sometimes shows in this adaptation, but putting that aside (because it seems like the anime industry of this era still can't make use of the CGI to its full potential) it seems a failry good adaotation. Don't mind the crowd that picks on everything, if you enjoy it then good for you, if not then just drop it.

Nostalgia merchants will say the remake is bad.
But it is more faithful to LN in terms of character Design and Plot.

Voice-acting that fleshed out characters in the original installment maybe? Or that dude in charge of sounding department of the remake forgot to turn on the SFX for the night in the forest and made up for it by overplaying the monotone BGM that didn't even add any deeper layer to the conversation than distracting people from it? Whom is he trying to fool? Everyone who has ears knows.

@Ab_271004 if series concludes their romance and tells us do they official hook up and have kids or not and finishes the story then its way better

unlike the previous version that left us hanging with unfinished didn't say whatever they official hook up and have kids or not

@V1P3R0P lmao that makes the debate even funnier. Like if it's the SAME director, then why is there this debate in the first place? People should rather feel assured that an experienced director is helming this remake KEKW

@Koustubh Well, if you want to get more technical, Takeo Takahashi is credited as chief director, and while he did storyboard this first episode, chief directors usually tend to serve as more of a supervisor role rather than a creative/hands-on one.

@Oongbuh I see. Thanks for the clarification. Yeah, I still feel that S&W is in good hands overall and we should expect good things from it.

I haven't seen the old verison of the anime but I read 6 volumes of the light novel and I do think they did a great job with the remake. There are some difrenses from the LN
and some other small stuff they left out wich is understandable because much off it dosn't really matter but it is sad they skipped it because personaly I do think it enriches the worldbuilding or something. But I do recommend reading the LN, it's verry good.

The first scene of this first episode is original to the remake. I think it was a poor choice, because comparing the first episodes of 2008 and 2024, the remake feels too fast, and if they'd cut that scene they'd have had more time to spend elsewhere. Lawrence's conversation with Holo when she appears in his wagon is long as hell in the light novel and it's one of the best dialogues of the whole story. It needed more time. Other than that it seems mostly faithful as an adaptation, though I don't remember Yarei being much of a focus in the novels. Yarei was a pretty flat character in those, though, which was a problem. The 2008 show solved this by replacing him with Chloe, a far more enjoyable and interesting presence. I don't know why the remake has bothered focusing on Yarei when he's never going to match Chloe (and because that scene with him took MORE time away from Holo. Lawrence met a god today! That's a BIG thing! If Holo gets her mystique back in the following episodes I'll be happy with this remake.)

The 2008, like the 2024, also had a beginning scene that established Holo's contract with the village, but it was wordless and short. The new version of that scene strikes me more as a show of technical skill (the resonating sound as Holo slides her finger along the rim of her glass is BEAUTIFUL, among other things), which a studio known for, well, soft pornos, probably needed to put in so they'd be taken seriously.
