“Frieren the Slayer. One of the geniuses I despise.”

Alright, where do I begin with this. Let’s start at the beginning, shall we? I know I’m not alone in this, but the depiction of the true nature of demons is absolutely phenomenal, it’s not new or anything but refreshing; they’re full of deceit, lies, the form of evil at their core. The short sequence between Frieren and Draft, the fight was already over but not for Frieren. A heated moment that ended as fast as it began. Lugnër especially just exudes this authoritative and scornful presence with his voice confirming that.

Funny moment between the party, love Stark while Fern is just dragging the man away.

What a sight of Aura the Guillotine, the dark forest mixing with the setting sun while she overlooks the town with an army of risen knights. This was a flat landscape behind a mountain in the manga, so a very surprising yet very brilliant change to make it a more unsettling image. Frieren Smirk, heh. Okay I have to express my excitement when Fern appeared and blasted Lugnër with Zoltraak, because what a leap from 60 to 100 WITH THE SOUNDTRACK ELEVATING IT. Sorry, really made me drop my jaw.

As Fern and Stark rescue the Graf, Frieren confronts Aura and her army. The battle has begun, the Mage’s Party versus Aura’s remnant army and her right wing.
WHAT AN EPISODE, the slow build-up to the confrontation to the production value and quality consistency, incredible adaptation to the beginning action of the arc.

Oh yeah, have a wonderful Frieren Friday. :)

I personally disliked the episode. If was about them doing odd jobs would been great and fine. But this one had reason to be more fast paced and have more action.
They talked so much that even in the flashback Frieren couldn't kill the demon guy, and just killed the bootlicker demon. And Fern decided to do a stare off.

Now I don't know to get excited for the next episode.
@BlichoBoy I actually agree that it'd be better to make combat scenes more dynamic, like Stark vs dragon. The greater the contrast between calm scenes and battle scenes, the better. Still, I don't think it's an episode-ruining thing, just something to improve on.

@Kababi the title is a play on words. It means both Frieren attends a funeral and Frieren is YOUR funeral. The whole slayer/reaper thing is a localization.
@billybub ironically, Russian translation of her title shows this duality better (while English translators did not bother adapting it properly): Frieren, The One Who Sends in the Last Journey.

I knew nothing of this, but this is the surprise of the decade so far for me.
Fantastic anime, very little to moan about. 9/10 so far.

This episode was great as well. I hope they can keep up for the whole season.

Damn. The way Frieren slayed that demon, in the beginning, was clean af ngl.

I am glad Granat actually realized Frieren wasn't stupid enough to escape by killing that guard. I would've hated it if Frieren was wrongly accused of a crime she didn't commit.

Fern is OP af. But she's still a noob. I like the way both Fern and Stark are growing as powerful mages.

Ok. I'll be honest. I think I'm finally into Frieren now. I think I got used to the pacing and am now really invested in the story and the characters.

I can already tell that the Frieren vs Aura showdown will be epic so I can't wait for it. I just wish every other episode after 9 will be this exciting. Though that might be asking for too much.

So, Sousou no Frieren actually meant Frieren the Slayer? I remember reading somewhere that it's Frieren of the Funeral. Maybe both meanings are correct.

@0451 the kanji for the title means Frieren at/attends a funeral, but when spoken can mean Frieren is your funeral. It's a play on words. Slayer in the episode title is a localization

This did get a bit slow for a couple of episodes with the whole dragon/village arc. Frankly spent too long there... but it has picked back up while also continuing to not be ostentatious. I'm very pleased with this :).

Frieren confronting Aura and her army by herself is gonna ba so sick

It was cool to see Fern and Stark saving Granat from Lugner and that demon mage. So I guess they'll have their hands full with them in the next one too.

Absolutely love the comparative shots of both Frieren and Fern levitating in front of the moon, it goes so hard. And their emotionless expressions make it go even harder.

THE OST, THE FUCKING OST. My god that 50 second made this episode the best imo. Hell better than the dragon fight.

Fern entrance, the Frieren's nickname among the demons.

It made me shiver, portrayed perfectly too. 10 Times better than the manga.

Someone mentioned this on Tumblr, but I love how the title 「葬送のフリ一レン」can translate to both "Frieren at the Funeral" (because she's sad that her friends are dead uwu) AND "Frieren the Undertaker" (because she's sending her enemies to their funerals). It's so clever and punny in the way that only Japanese can be.

Anyway I love how demons are depicted in this show. So many isekai and fantasy shows like to subvert the expectation that all demons are bad and make it so that they're misunderstood or victims of discrimination. So this show actually saying "yes, all demons are bad" is kinda new and refreshing.

I love the magic system in this show! Everyone's researching magic, and years of collective research can change the understanding and use of magic. It's almost like a science, in that regard.

@erikkamirs SouSou from the title of the episode in this case in japanese is written 葬そう送そう and translates to something like "Let's hold a funeral and send (someone off)" ; a more badass or passive aggressive way of saying to off someone
SouSou (葬送) in the title of the show is basically to mourn. It's context dependant

They did it! They said the thing!

I love how realistic they handle Stark, Fern and even Frieren’s fear. No one likes fighting strong scary people lol. Really reminds me of the GoT quote “how can I be brave if I’m scared?” “Son, that’s the only time a man can be brave”

Also love how the demons are shown to be completely irredeemable unlike most fantasy stories where they’re morally grey misunderstood. These demons are totally incapable of being reasoned with or stopping their wicked ways.

The Fern and Frieren floating shots at the end of the episode were so cool. Fern as really taken on her master’s demeanour and strength.

Can’t wait to see how things go next week!

@billybub My friend (who's learning Japanese and currently at around N2/N1 level) said:
"Basically first kanji 葬 (そう)means burial / funeral, 送(お.くる・そう)means to send / to escort something, in the normal usage 葬送 means attending the funaral ( especially the procession ) or just seeing the burial, but in this case you can take it as a word play as to send someone to funeral"

So ye basically the title is "Frieren, who watches funerals" or as 0451 has said, in short "Frieren of the Funeral", but Lügner meant it as Frieren, who sends to funerals", kind of like Nachtwandler_21 said.

The action sequences will never miss, and sure as hell will the comedic elements and interactions either. Frieren against the Demon was an one-sided battle, beautifully done. She even hid herself with a cape, but it's Frieren afterall. Turns out she got greater plans than Stark and Fern. She'll be going against the main army while they handle the insects. The infilitration was a succes, but at the end, it seems like they're not the that won. Well, they got the ruler which is great.
The end is amazing! Frieren the slayer is going to show us some badass shit.

Freiren Descending in front of aura with that cold stare Was chilling like she was looking at garbage.

Wonder how the demon survived Freiren the first time?

Fern is more like Freiren than she realises. Liked the shot where it overlapped her and Freiren.

This episode. really was a banger, us figuring out where sousou no frieren is from, then aura making an appearance, and the score! the narration! was simply breathtaking to watch.
And don't get me started on the build up, it was phenominal as usual! the small hitting moments collectively leading up to freiren's reveal as THE SLAYER!!! And then it all hits you all at once.

this episode is one of the best in terms of magic combat and IQ.

I literally predicted everything that was going to happen, I am impressed that frieren got away so easily.

the demon king I see is weak, understandable since literally the sorceress that frieren trains is very strong, and the boy is also very strong.

frieren apparently is going to fight against aura, hopefully that happens so this anime continues to break the internet, as it is literally trending on twitter.

very good chapter I found incredible the strength of frieren and the boys too.

I very much enjoyed this episode! The true power of Frieren the elf leeks through now and the moment Lügner revealed her "extra title" at the end gave me chills! I seem to be captured fully now by the calm yet grand atmosphere this anime engulfes it´s viewers with. Now, I have to point out, that I like what this episode covered, it´s called pacing I think, which I find this anime to tickle the sweet spot of mine in that regard. Also I have to point ot that I like the chemistry between the 3 - exspecially Stark and Fern this episode. They are hillarious yet powerful, just like their master Frieren and balance the whimsical element to their character with their quirks while batteling really well - love to see more of them going foreward. I thouroly enjoyed the watch, thank you creative people, I´m "wunschlos glücklich" (german for something like wishlessly happy).
