Would you still watch it? Say, for example, it involved a natural disaster like Tokyo gets rocked by a 10.1 earthquake and later by a tsunami, causing hundred thousands (if not millions) of deaths. Or North Korea and China tag team and bum rush Japan. Or maybe a bio/chemical weapon is released by state or non-state actors (pick your favorite boogeyman) and the country turns to chaos as a result and now Takashi and his group are facing real-world threats. I always taught HOTD had a good potential as a survival anime had they gone with a more realistic threat rather than with zombies. Would these scenarios be too depressing and hit to close to home? Any other realistic scenarios you have in mind? What do you guys think?

It bastardizing zombie invasion genre is one of it's many sins.
If it weren't for that, it would be just another mediocre ecchi show, that would fall into abyss of irrelevancy and forgotten as it should.

Would be a lot different especially later in the few chapters of the manga where some important side characters die from zombies
As Long as the Sun, the moon, and the Earth exist, everything will be alright.

I think it would be interesting with zombies or natural disasters. I like both genres. Tho prefer my zombie to which is why I watched HOTD. It’s one of my favourite zombie anime because it’s hard to find decent ones

I like the bio/chemical weapon idea that would make for an awesome show I’d totally watch that

It would feel less carnal, then, which is what makes the show so fun in the first place.

these don't sound too bad and I think the china and North Korea bum rush could be a good plot setting like maybe the same type of setting as Red dawn but less shitty and better.

I honestly would see these characters out there doing guerilla tactics against the NK or an invasion force especially when you consider that Hirano was trained by a Blackwater and ex Delta Force operator.

Modern day action anime nowadays should focus on like military stuff like jormungand which I consider tb the closest ever to true modern anime military action. that's just imo, I'm a huge nut for this stuff and military stuff in general.

Many people have correct opinion, that this show is an abomination and I am one of them, so it's possible.

Opinions are neither correct nor incorrect. They are not Truths... they are, just opinions. HOTD may not be a top-notch anime, but it caters to a genre that many people enjoy. The other concepts sound petty interesting, and yes, I'd also watch them. But zombie anime with some ecchi for added effect, and I'm watching 24/7.

I disagree if you're refering to the 80s version. It's not a perfect film, but it does a good job of showing how guerilla warfare would look like in an area like that and why they have a fighting chance because of the guns and ammo available to them since they're living in a rural part of the US. Also, while a group of teens wouldn't be able to go toe-toe against the Spetsnaz, they could perform well against the regular Soviet army by sabotaging their logistics and other stuff. This is the main reason why they were hunted down in the first place because how effective they were in creating damage.

I agree there should be anime which focuses on realistic military battles that don't involve mechas or teens being drama queens. But I understand why Japan won't go for this type of stuff.

If they really spun the “people going crazy” panicking rioting looting, making different survivor factions people taking over this ravaged city: it could be SUPER interesting
But it would be a totally different show, a generic disaster plot would be boring bc not much conflict IMO

I know you kids like to sound edgy to the extreme but a  10.1 earthquake  is logically not possible.

That show is just perfect the way it is. Without the zombies I guess it would fall down into porn (porn + any natural, biological disaster).

Without a doubt, "they" are just for the glorification of violence which it did wonderfully, but the best aspect of the show is the coming-of-age story of the kids finding their own place in the world and learning to work and trust in their improvised family unit.

Sadly the story was cut short with the sickness and death of Satou Daisuke-san, a real shame, the characters didn't get many chances to show their maturity as the incident with "them" progressed, but we got the building blocks of what could had been.
