Oh wow another typically cliched background story of a character we barely saw until and we don't care about followed by its "shockingly sad" death...
Come on this anime is not good.

ballsy move to have a full ep without the MC. Again we got decent backstory but no plot development. Ep 7 was way better.

I told myself I am not going to watch this EP as I don’t want to see Tenza’s death animated but DAAAAMN!!! This is the best episode on HP so far 😭 Why did Tenza have to die right away?? He was my favorite!! I cried harder when it showed What could have happened to Tenza in the future πŸ₯Ή

Does this anime not love anyone moving like AOT. How could you take Tenza from us. Bro was a bundle of joy in 2 episodes they made us love him and killed him off. Tenza was a monster though he fought hard for someone that was dying he didn't give up at all. He was a true man.

Crazy how this Anime introduces characters with the rawest designs making you think they are going to stick around for three seasons at least only for them to die within the first 10 episodes.

I'm still no over the death of that Renji looking mf.

Well at least he got a whole episode and part of the ending titles to fit his backstory, doesn't really make me care about his death more than the rest of the secondary cast but good for him I guess.

I honestly do not expect anyone to survive by the end except the main duo and maaaaybe Yuzuriha, 'cause she seems fun (and two other things).

I don't suppose anyone but the main duo is making it out of the island, but I one still has to wonder what the ninja clan can do against the Tensen that these guys (including two ninjas) can't. Maybe the Clan head knows something they don't.

They really just killed off one of the only interesting characters in the show so far, while keeping Yuzuhira or the bandit bros alive ugh - the worst part is his death flags were high since the OP itself so I had hoped they would defy expectations but rip

I don't know if it was better handled in manga, but it was one poorly directed episode even for a filler. It's straight up bad writing (and any literature major or a professional writer would agree) to give an entire backstory of a character, then kill them off in a single episode to show what exactly? The monsters are dangerous? Good characters don't have a plot armor? Suppose I had built up a little higher expectations for the direction of this show.
Have you ever heard of the Game of Thrones, volume \ season one? I'm a professional writer (i.e. I earn money from writing books) and I can say that killing a seemingly important side character is a nice move, as long as you don't overuse it. But I agree with you that their backstory should've been placed in a different place, like when the character was first introduced, not immediately before their death. Also, the whole point of entertainment is to make people feel strong emotions that correlate with what happened in the story, i.e. sad moments should make them sad, and happy moments, well, happy for the characters. The end of this episode made me (and many others, considering the comments) sad, so I guess the main purpose was achieved. BTW, having a writing degree doesn't mean much, I checked some books from people who actually teach creative writing at Stanford and they aren't popular at all. There are some very good books about writing modern fiction, but they aren't studied at those lessons. Brandon Sanderson lectures, though, are pure gold in terms of writing advice, probably the best out there.

Are they just gonna kill off every newly introduced character and expect me to care about them because of a couple of flashbacks?
At least let them live for more than 2 episodes after their introduction..

The true harshness of the world of Jigokuraku has finally started to show its colors. We start with Tenza and Nurugai facing superior beings. Lots of information dumped and characterization focused on Tenza. It's quite interesting how he became the person he is in the current timeline and part of that is due to his master's influence.

Sure I found The Game of Thrones ultimately a boring nothing-fest some decade ago when it first aired. Correct me if I'm wrong but the episode runtime for the show was 45mins to 1hr, no? It may be just enough to pull a character death in a way it's integral to the story being told, but in comparison 22mins anime episode just didn't handle it well.
I'll skip replying to some things you wrote there for now and rest assured there's not much I find to argue about on your comment. I'm too a professional writer (politics, journalism in general), or rather was until I went back to uni for computer science and switched careers towards systems architecture design. I wasn't implying having a degree matters, just used a group of people on the said field of research as an example since a level of consensus exists on how to handle character arcs. Although in the end if it made the target audience feel and reflect on those feelings something was achieved. Then it just calls in question the standards of an average viewer; are they happy with consuming kitsch art for cheap, temporary feelings it provides or should they seek awe (which may be the rarest feeling throughout one's entire life)?

It was a really good flashback to the backstory of Yamada Asemon Tenza. It made his death more meaningful. He didn't deserve to die, but they did it right. He died protecting his friend and his sensei.

Those visions of a possible future during Tenza's final moments shattered my heart. Respect Tenza for protecting his dear ones till death. Respect to his sensei for not being carried away by emotions and not letting Tenza's sacrifice go to waste.

Bro, this anime confuses the shi out of me. Not the plot tho, the characters, why do they keep introducing new characters, give them an entire episode with backstory and all then proceed to get them killed in the same episode. I can't be the only one thinking about this..

Yeah, it's very poor writing. You can't feel a character's death if you've only spent five minutes with them. Plus they add absolutely nothing to the main plot, they die without changing anything or offering new information about the island.
I agree, it felt kinda forced, like the writers want us to care about the characters but then they rush it like this for no reason. Overall I still like the setting of the series but the characters are quite one-dimensional and sometimes cringeworthy. The potential of the series lies not in the characters, but in the settings of this weird island. I feel like they could make it much more mysterious, menacing and beautiful at the same time, and show character development in a more subtle and less rushed way, without the excessive use of constant flashbacks.

they're just building characters up before killing them, as much as I liked the character, this direction is getting pretty repetitive.
