What if genders were reversed?

Let's say that Usagi Drop was a manga about a found family where a Mother takes care of a son, when the son grows up, he falls in love with the mom and she reciprocates his love, they marry each other.

If gender roles between Daikichi and Rin were reversed, would the ending still be hated?

I think the main backlash is not about the gender of each character but rather the ruining of the parent-child relationship they had which was the selling point of the manga in the first place for most readers. So even if the roles are reversed, it would still be quite hated for having destroyed the amazing story it managed to build up till then.

Best ending line in anime history = "My name is Saiki Kusuo. I am a psychic."

Once a relationship between parent and child is ruined, there is no turning back.

It doesn't matter if genders were reversed or not, the bond between them is sullied and disgraced regardless.

It's less that it's creepy or smth like that but more of betraying the characters, and what they've done do lead up to that point. Like for example how do you think Code Geass fans would feel if Lelouch became The Douch and starting acting like a total baffoon (oh wait that's actually happened). Yeah they were not happy his character was stepped and shattered into pieces like that
