I did. Not the porn version though. I doubt I missed out on a lot.
The VN itself was pretty good. Good enough that it made me reconsider the anime. Now I feel like the anime works best as companion material to the VN and not standalone.

I respect Kinoko Nasu as a writer but I don’t enjoy VN format. I’ve only seen the anime and I thought it was fantastic. The animation and music were phenomenal, and the storytelling and characters were pretty good. I understand there was probably a lot more detail in the source material but the anime got the point across very well in my opinion. It didn’t feel like much was missing, if anything.

the original visual novel had sex scenes, those were removed and replaced with much better and more appropriate mana transfer scenes in the realta nua version in 2007

Yes. Only like a few weeks ago too. The pron scenes had hella bad dialogue but the cgs themselves was ok. As for the overall story and how they fit in… I mean they didn’t really need to be there except for Heaven’s feel but they don’t really interrupt the flow except for the saber Rin shirou 3 some. As for the VNs story vs the anime.

The VN of course is way more detailed and everything which made it an overall better story experience while of course the animes are a better visual experience. The fate route has never had an actually good and accurate adaptation yet which does it a disservice because I actually fairly liked it. UBW is easily the most accurately adapted as it is the most amount of action. And Heaven’s feel, hoo boy, I still like the Heaven’s feel movies as a Sakura route adaptation however the Heaven’s feel VN story is actually more of a Sakura and Illiya route more than anything so them just removing majority of illiya’s scenes really hurt the anime imo. Plus they removed a lot of sabers scenes before she gets changed which also hurts the movies if you read the vn. So honestly I recommend reading the vn after watching the shows/movies as you’ll probably hate the shows/movies if you do the VN first.

At the very least I think you should watch a playthrough of the fate and Heaven’s feel route because the fate route never got an accurate adaptation and the Heaven’s feel route outright removed basically all of Illiya’s scenes purely for the Sakura stuff even though it’s the Sakura and Illiya route

I absolutely loved the original Fate Stay Night Visual Novel ! I binged all 3 routes back in 2013-2014 ish last I recall and it does have a full fan translation currently for both the original and Realta Nua ( Realta Nua pc port from the vita / ps2) and one of my all time favorite early introductions to visual novels as a whole! Saber Alter kicks ass! 💜💜☺️☺️

i havent played the VN, but i've read through the whole 3 routes through an archive in this site:

you read through it with pictures of the scenes, and they put in videos for the scenes that they think you need to experience in video. It's a good way to experience the VN without the hassle.. and you can skip the dirty stuff, if you want.

I finished reading Fsn vn for the 2nd time last month and it was an even better experience than playing the vn for the 1st time. Reading it for the 1st gets you a pretty good understanding of the entire story but while reading it for the 2nd time, you can catch all the small details and hidden meaning that you miss while playing it for the 1st time which can make you understand the characters better and appreciate the story as a whole.
