I have been trying to complete gintama but the comedy episodes are flat out boring to me. So can i skip the comedy episodes and just watch the important arcs? Will skipping it impact the story in any way?

I'm sure there are new recurring characters introduced in some comedy episodes but I might be confusing those with story arcs since all story arcs start with funny episodes and become more serious as the arc goes on.

No you can’t, the anime is the comedy episodes, you won’t feel relate understand right the real arcs bc then you don’t know the real character.
You either watch the whole thing or skip the anime bc it’s not your cup of tea and that’s fine.
Hopefully you’ll find things you enjoy:)

Yes i got a list of all important arcs from Google so i can watch them. But my question is that can i skip the standalone comedy episodes or not?

You might as well just skip the entire show. Even in the middle of serious arcs there's that comedy that you claimed to be boring.

I would say no because without the comedy episodes, you don’t exactly feel the weight of the serious ones. I would hope that ur still in the earlier episodes of Gintama because I can understand why those ones may not be everyone’s cup of tea. But, if ur able to push thru until the first serious arc, the comedy that comes after that is def unmatched and u will not be wanting to skip the comedy episodes.

Note that this anime is a comedy before it’s a serious show. While it does have its awesome serious moments, if u don’t appreciate the comedy, the serious moments don’t feel as worth watching.

You should not. I dont know at what episode you are on but ignore only the first 2 episodes. The rest is important. The comedy might feel boring at first for some since they are like the introduction episodes and most of the characters are being introduced.
Gintama has a big cast of characters so it will take time to get to know them but once you do, the comedy will hit harder in the later episodes.
If you enjoyed the time you wasted, then its not a waste of time.

i wouldn't suggust it pal, every arc is crucial for the story, it may seem like a gag but important foreshadowing and characters are introduced.

Oh yeah... It gets kinda inconsistent around this batch. There are a few banger comedy arcs and episodes around here, but just far in between. Personally the comedy of gintama starts umping up to standards around 160ish+ and the comedy Gintama is known for really seen from Gintama (2011) onwards. Not saying it will justify the long wait for you personally but trust me, the comedy arcs around the 180-200+ arc are just golden (and with better animation no less).

And if you can't reach that point hey I don't blame you. You could skip certain episodes but I suggest not to literally skip to serious arcs everytime. There is a guide online if you want.

So yeah try to hold out a bit. Also it makes the serious arcs so much rewarding.

The serious arcs won't hit the same like they are supposed to if you skip the comedic episodes imo. And, this is probably the only show which has gold fillers among all long battle shounens.

No, you cant. If you dont like the comedy dont watch it. Imo the comedy is best part ofc the action and story is amazing, but for the first 200 episodes thats not what gintama id about.

My advice is the same as the others:

Not your type of anime, you can consider dropping it.

It is perfectly fine to drop a popular anime. I fell asleep watching AoT S3 and Gurren Lagan.

If you've passed 100 episodes and still don't like it, drop it. The serious arcs will probably fall flat if you don't care about the characters.

You want to skip the main essence of gintama? If you're watching for the serious arcs alone you must understand that gintama is a comedy show and the serious arcs are just a part of it.

No you will miss all the interactions that build up the characters and the story. It gets better after about 30 episodes but every arc even the serious ones have comedy mixed in and one of my favorite arcs is more comedy than serious but also has great character development for one character.

Not gonna lie in the beginning I was bored by the comedy too but it grows on you once you start connecting with the characters more. The hotpot episode was the first episode that I legit thought was hilarious and then after that the show clicked. Keep watching it without skipping, but if it’s still not clicking just drop it.

Might as skip the entire show then, comedy is the core of Gintama if you're not enjoying that, there's no point in forcing yourself to finish it just for the sake of finishing it.

Don’t watch Gintama if you found it boring. If you only watching the Action Arcs is gonna throw you in a confusing loop. There’s a reason why Gintama was in the top 10 on MyAnimeList at one point or probably still is I didn’t check. It’s a very good anime but it starts up slow but if you watched the all episodes, you get the point why Gintama is very good anime.
Sorry this anime is not Fullmetal alchemist or one piece. Go watch something else dude

You have it backwards. If this was a sandwich the comedy is the bread and the serious arcs are the sauce. Adds lots of flavour, but won't fill you up on their own. The laters arcs only pay off when you've spent time with the characters in some wacky episodes and it's honestly hard to make a clear cut because lots of essential character building is sprinkled in some seemingly random episodes. It's definitely not recommended to skip, might as well skip the entire series if it's boring. There a better series you can watch for epic story arcs.

There is a handful of absolutely inconsequential comedy episodes. But some of the most important characters were introduced in the most random episodes. 2 chars in particular, who were the main driving force in the COTN and SA arcs both debuted in the most random, silly episodes. So unless you watch those eps, you'll be left with many whats and whys.

Some say it's getting fun around 50 ep, some say 80 ep, but for me I enjoy it since the first episode. So popular or not, it's up to your taste.
Gintama is mainly comedy, full of parody (parody of other anime, manga, TV show, news at that time, so you might not fully understand about that joke but it's not important).
If you don't enjoy it, just hold or drop it :)
If you enjoy it, your hear will tell you to watch more and more (even you wanna go to sleep lol).

If you dont watch Gintama for the comedy arcs then there’s no point in watching it.

The comedy serves as developing character relationships (okay, in some cases they are downright nonsensical) but thats the charm of it and you grow closer to them and when shit goes down you feel the FULL impact

You shouldn't do that, you'll lose Gintama's magic. Most of the episodes being retarded guys doing idiocy and all of a sudden the atmosphere changing totally is something sensational, if you don't like comedy, the serious arcs end up not having much value for you. Many characters are introduced in normal episodes, appearing to be just retarded, and only later in the serious arcs do we really get to know them, that's part of the magic of Gintama. Skipping the comedy episodes and going straight to the serious arcs would be like watching the summaries of the one piece arcs and going straight to wano. If you don't like comedy, then I don't recommend continuing watching.

Try this guide, it helped me with the earlier episodes of Gintama: https://sotaku.com/gintama-complete-skippable-episode-guide/

At this point (70-100 onward) the series really was interesting for me personally but there were some comedy episodes here and there that still bored me. Comedy is subjective but you'll learn to love the characters more as you continue, which is what made me appreciate the comedy episodes. The next serious arc, Yoshiwara in Flames (139-146), is one of my favorite arcs and many consider it to be among the best in Gintama.

Lots of Gintama fans will think it's a sin to skip pretty much any episode; however, I think not finishing the series or stopping before you truly love the show is worse. Gintama is one of the best anime ever made IMO but if I didn't keep going I'd never know how much of a masterpiece it is.

P.S. You can also look at the IMDB user scores for each individual episode to see what comedy episodes are more well liked by the general audience, the guide I linked above does miss some good ones.

I think what you mean by the « serious » story is Gintoki’s past and the war with Aliens because there is a lot of arc that are not serious, take the popularity rank arc or even some game inspired arc. Gintama is a comedy show and you will lost the point of it if you skip the “comedy” episode which in fact are part of the story as much as the serious one. I recommend you to continue and if you still think it’s boring there’s nothing wrong with dropping Gintama, at least you gave it a shot !
I have not finished the show, but maybe you can follow the story with the movies ?
(Ps : sorry for my English, hope it make sense)
