*Spoilers*

The original ending for this movie was that Kami Madoka would appear from the skies to take Homura away to join her in non existential space but as we've seen from the movie this did not play out this way.

Well we can see why:

"Writer Gen Urobuchi stated in the planning stages of Rebellion his idea was to end the film with Homura being taken away with Madoka to the Heavens. “I thought the story would end this time for real!” he laughs. However, the producer and director insisted the story should continue, leaving Urobuchi with little choice. “I really feel that Madoka doesn’t just belong to me anymore” Urobuchi says. It was the director who suggested the upcoming twist."

That explains a lot since I thought it would end that way and lines up more with the original series character motives. What we got instead was Homura defying Madoka; she displayed a greater degree of obsession which could be seen as uncharacteristic or perhaps still in line with Homura. Whatever the case on the up side now we know that was the original intended ending. At the same time we also get more Madoka which you wont see me complaining about. Perhaps they can lead up to it with the next movie in a way that makes it a worthwhile interpretation. Thoughts?

Great twist there.

I prefer that rather than going the generic route!!!

Nice thread, I think it was good that it wasn’t the final since now that homura is the antagonist, it will be the perfect time to use the ending that gen wanted which will make it all worthwhile.

Homura was always depicted as a bit deranged. I mean, she traveled back in time over 100 times watching her best friend suffer a painful death, being completely powerless in changing her fate. The true ending would’ve been very romantic but this ending was way better, and just proves that sometimes a little input from others is right to listen to.

That's really interesting, it makes me really want to read the manga, see the differences between the movies and manga.

I felt like it was uncharacteristic of Homura to pull what she did. After she suffered for so long, so selflessly, she turns around and does the exact opposite of the character that we thought her to be. Overall, not impressed. I think I would have preferred the intended ending but maybe Jay is right. I hope he's right, because everyone has suffered way, way too much.

poor Urobuchi his original ending was scrapped for the sake of milking the cash cow
