Isn't there a show that is more deserving to be the 7th most popular anime instead of Tokyo Ghoul. Mostly because since the anime is so popular yet the general consensus is mixed, I think its giving a bad reputation for the anime genre.

Anime is not a genre and no it bring popular on some website doesn't give anime a bad name.
The 7th highest grossing film of all time (more relevant than being the 7th most popular series on myanimelist.net) is Jurassic World which also had mixed reception but I don't see people going around saying that it being popular gives the whole medium of film a bad name.

Sword art online is number 5. Does that mean anything? A very large part of the weeb community has come to the agreement that it’s low quality trash but that doesn’t stop it from being popular. Demon slayer is popular. Rent a girlfriend is popular.Popularity has nothing to do with quality. And as for Tokyo Ghoul well it’s the first season that’s popular so I really don’t see any problem. It’s generally liked so why shouldn’t it be popular? I don’t really see the point you’re trying to make

Well, it’s popular because a lot of people watched it. So there’s no way to really say that it doesn’t deserve to be up there, because it wouldn’t be up there if it didn’t ‘deserve’ to be.

Sure, there are plenty of people who hate or don’t like it. But whether the show is good or not is subjective. Popularity, however, is fact.

What do you mean by "deserve"? It's not like TG claim it itself. People have considered to watch it, and the manga is really good, and popular, too. Just because adaptation is butchered, doesn't mean it isn't worth it.

As much as I love Tokyo Ghoul, I am aware of all of it's flaws. The anime was definitely butchered, but I also think it's a lot better than what most people will lead you to believe.
Despite the shitty animation and cheesy script, I genuinely enjoy Tokyo Ghoul every single time I rewatch it. It makes me cry, it makes me actually care about the characters, and it's even got some iconic theme songs. I've always considered it a "classic must watch." Now, Tokyo Ghoul Re: is an entirely different story to tackle...

Even the first season had flaws because they really wanted to rush to kaneki’s white hair form, then they go completely off script for a majority of season 2

It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

It's season 1 and if you think about the popularity of season 1 it's well deserved if we're talking about quality season 1 to me is a fine adaptation the rest of the show is horrible tho(adaptation I know manga is good)

if the adaptation followed the manga it was guaranteed a spot it in top 10 for eternity but they decided to butcher it in the anime by leaving plot holes everywhere , I only understood the story after reading the manga

I mean not every anime fan uses mal and even then it only counts to the popularity of it gets added to a list. So in general the popularity thing isn’t super accurate and imo I don’t think that Tokyo ghoul would be top 10 regardless

Very mixed on it. Season 1 I feel definitely deserves it but that’s just me because I feel like it adapted parts of the manga well for the first part as well as the music, animation, characters, the fights and art all being really well done at least in my opinion. Root A(season 2) was a major step down though didn’t follow the manga brought in uninteresting characters, characters were ruined and the story and pacing was messy, the animation, music and fights were good but Root A doesn’t deserve top 10. As for Re and Re part 2 both have issues. Re part 1 felt very slow and drawn out where as Re part 2 felt it went by too quick and rushed everything. The animation was also a major change but not the worst change.

Overall, Season 1 I think deserves it the rest not so much.

most definitely, id say it was a modern day gateway for a lot of people into anime or atleast gore anime. I’m not saying it’s the best or has the most intricate storyline i’m just saying it’s very rare for someone to not have watched or atleast heard about tokyo ghoul at this point

You are mixing popularity with scores. While I admit that Mal rankings, Popularity and scores cant be trusted but Tokyo ghoul being so high is because many people have watched it or know about it. Its hell of a popular show amongst the community and at one point it was the most talked about show along with AOT and OPM. It was also considered a starter anime for pre Kny times.

If you enjoyed the time you wasted, then its not a waste of time.

Anime is not a genre It's a medium. Non of the top 10 most popular show deserves to be in top ten, but they all do because of their mediocrity, same goes with pretty much any medium though. Top 10 most popular books for example also don't deserve to be there. Popularity is mostly gained by being simple, inoffensive and accessible.

Also everyone liking something is a sign of mediocrity in topic or style with high quality of presentation. Good things tend to evoke strong emotions, in many ways most best things are rated in extremes.

it got stupidly popular because of its OP and the story it had going for the time, and it was edgy as hell. Same opinion I have for SAO it's just one of those anime that represent anime but are not necessarily the best ones to watch

MAL ratings don't mean anything. SAO and Tokyo Ghoul are more popular on here than Naruto and Demon Slayer. Like we all know that simply isn't true lol. Personally I think it's cool for a Seinen anime to be ranked in the top 10 and I really loved the first season so I'm not mad about it or anything. Having said that both 1997 Berserk and Vinland Saga are both way better Seinen. So if we're talking about quality their both more deserving imo.

the anime? if you are talking about tg and tga, u could argue they are pretty good(especially tg) even if the story was changed vastly in tga. easily top 50 to 100 for me, as i was a simple anime watching pleb when i first saw it. tgre(anime) definitely was an atrocity worse than the story changing shenanigans in tga. u should try reading the mangas if you haven't already. ummmmm, that's all ig. also unravel still rocks

I agree that Tokyo Ghoul does not deserve no.7. But it’s not alone. Like why even bring up Tokyo Ghoul when Sword Art Online is 5th and MHA is 6th. Like I think Tokyo Ghoul is leaps and bounds ahead of either and I don’t even think Tokyo Ghoul is top 20
