No hating or anything like that but I am a big sports anime fan my favorite manga is slam dunk but is there anything I am missing? I’m basically caught up and I was wonder what made this considered a top top sports anime besides the great animation(which is very good).

well I think it's not as good as slam dunk(no way near it but the season 3 is actually peak sports anime

I also think Slam Dunk is better, but not by a longshot, there are certain things i even prefer in Haikyu.
What makes it so great, imo its how it handles and develops its characters, also every match is really exciting.
So I do think it deserves its praise.

For the same reason the big team sports anime/manga (slam dunk, diamond no ace, etc) are popular - the realistic representation with some spice, the drama surrounding the characters tied to the sport, etc.

I think the distinction to whether you love one more than the other is your preference. For example, I love and played volleyball for years so it's up to my alley. Plus, I like watching baseball games. So, my faves are Haikyuu and DnA.

I loved all seasons of haikyuu specially s2,3 and s4 2nd part.

I actually like Haikyuu way more than Slam Dunk.
Slam Dunk is one of the worst spokon I have watched. Don't be mad, I have watched only good spokons and Slam Dunk flaws are all of them because of the awful pace of the anime adaptation.

Anyway, I think Haikyu is one of the best. It has all I like of spokons, with top quality.

People just like Hailyuu because it’s a newer show In my opinion it gets old and boring pretty quick, and it’s kinda redundant.

There’s just better sports anime out there that follow the same ‘sports formula’… Slam Dunk is the OG of course, but Kuroko no Basket is a better newer sports anime for example!

It gets way better after s1, the matches are more engaging, good side characters becomes a thing and also the comedy becomes less annoying, try watching a bit more episodes, and If u don't like It, just drop it

Honestly probably the time it got popular. I know the anime came out actually a good while ago when we look back, but it got popular, not just in the anime community but in the mainstream community I would argue in 2020, and the mainly male cast appealed to a lot of young girls, and volleyball is also a very common sport that young kids play, and the fandom I guess really knew how to spread it to others. For a lot of new anime fans (I say new as if it wasn’t two years ago) this was a first for them, and something they probably recommend to others. Sorry if this isn’t a satisfying answer but a lot of how animes get popular are based on chance and timing. I hope that helps :)

Most of why I even picked it up was that I was on my highschool volleyball team back in the day. So it hits different compared to like... a basketball or a baseball show.

Haikyuu has one of the best character developments,and how they show each characters emotion and even the opponent teams, it's just great.
