I heard that Darkness is a different source material from previous seasons, but for me the gag show suddenly became slightly serious. I miss the show about Lala's shenanigans every episodes XD. I hope she becomes the main character again if there are more source materials to adapt.

Darkness is the sequel of the original To Love Ru adapted from the manga of the same name. Things become more “serious”, well not really but kinda. And Lala will not be the main love interest anymore, she and haruna become background characters in darkness and besides the whole premise of the harem they are’t relevant at all.

It's a sequel, that focuses more on Yami and Momo. IMO better, because Lala is being pushed to the role of supporting character and she was just insufferable.

There are weird personal reasons why the author pushed Haruna to the background. I'm not sure about Lala but maybe something similar happened.
