My buddies and I are deciding which horror movie to watch. I heard this movie is scary, but is it “anime scary” or is it actually truly horrifying and disturbing? Also I assume there aren’t any jump scares since anime never has those. So would this be a good pick or are we better off watching an american horror movie

It's disturbing and gets under your skin, but I wouldn't classify it as a horror movie in the same vein as others of that genre. Very much worth watching regardless.
Are ya winning, diners?

It has blood but that’s the only thing really scary. It’s more of an edge of your seat, psychological thriller.

I recommend an anime tv series called yami shibai=>https://myanimelist.net/anime/19383/Yami_Shibai
It's short and actually scary(some episodes at the least)

I would say it’s more consistently unnerving than scary, some would say that’s almost worse lol

Its a psychological horror, not supernatural. U wont get any Jump scares or anything but a haunting truth of the Duality of present human culture.
U will be sitting on your seat's edge.I wouldnt recommend it watching with friends though

It is psychological horror. Disturbing as fuck especially for people who encountered issues portrayed in the movie.

It’s on the realistic side of horror… like everything that happens in the movie is 100% possible to happen in real life. It deals with stalkers, hallucinations, psychological trauma, schizophrenia etc. the movie is also very trippy having you yourself question what is real and what is not, and it is done very well.

it's more like i would say psychological. it's a kind of horror but not really a horror it's will have a psychological effect on you and yeah sometimes it gets pretty disturbing but that's why I would say it's psychological. also it is realistic story if you really see that real world outside working in those area which is shown in the movie

Personally as a musician myself, I found this movie to be the scariest anime I've ever seen. most anime classified as horror just don't do it for me usually, though.

I'd recommend Berserk (1997) if you want something to make your skin crawl if this one doesn't do it for you though.

It's more like creepy and disturbing + that 90s anime artstyle, vibes, and atmosphere that feels somehow unique and beautiful. AND ALSO IT SEEMS THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL FILMS THAT HAS REFERENCES FROM THIS ANIME.

It’s not a typical horror that u would watch with friends to get scared. The purpose of the movie is to analyse it and the themes it’s exploring, not for a quick scare

Violence, nudity, rape and lots of blood - her skin is as pure as a snow, perfect blue. In short, this anime is a good triller.

its scary if you immerse yourself in it, the main thrill factor and "horror" of it comes from it how much of a mind-fuck it is and some of its disturbing moments. it wouldn't be my first pick if im strictly looking for something in the horror genre but its an amazing movie nonetheless

I wouldn’t say that it’s scary in the same way that films like the conjuring, insidious, and the shining are (no ghosts, no jump scares, etc.); I found that the “horror” in perfect blue is mostly psychological. It is definitely creepy at times, but I was never genuinely scared while watching it. It is DEFINITELY worth watching, but if you are looking for a fun horror flick, this isn’t it.

It's more a thriller than horror, as someone else said. Don't expect to have jump scares or outright gore. Horror builds up to a sudden spike, then gives you some calm before it builds up again. Thrillers don't give you those moments of calm, it's constant anxiety instead.

I don't understand why you already have the preconception that "anime scary" = not horrifying or disturbing.

I agree they're not like jump scare horror or anything but you'll find plenty of disturbing and unnerving things that are more horrifying in the psychological aspect, if you can get down with that. Maybe you're just not a psych thriller kind of person and just prefer your horror more to the point and in your face, which is fine. I find that boring though, and have more appreciation for horror that makes you think or leaves you on edge.

It's a good watch either way imo, even if you wouldn't find it scary.

It sure is horrifying but ain't a supernatural, it got blood but ain't a slasher, it got phantoms but not a ghost story; this shit is closest to realistic world any horror can get,
Although your definition for horror genre seems a bit limited,
I get a feeling you'll discover something new with this,
just like i did,
I suggest you to watch it alone rather than with buddies,
good luck pal

There is no such thing as a good horror anime. kowabon is the best ive found and its not great. This is more creepy, stalkery, psychological horror. Which wont keep anyone up at night. Still a great movie though.

If you dont want to sleep for 2 weeks then try hereditary. I regret watching that movie immensely.
He died doing what he wanted, no matter what, right? I bet he was happy.

Good luck with berserk Kouji Mori, you'll need all the help you can get. We believe in you.

Idk but I watched it late at night tired as fuck and that shit made me feel like I was on drugs. The movie goes in and out of reality so much it got me so emerged into it. Definitely the most crazy experience I've had watching an anime. Dont know if I would call it horror, it has some suspense but it was mainly just real tripy
