Everyone knows Cowboy Bebop as a big classic in this medium. But what were its beginnings like?

Did people enjoy it as much as they did today, despite differences in culture and time? Or maybe this was small-time anime that only got more impressive as time dragged on? Just want to know what was the initial reactions if anyone was there during the time or knows anything regarding it.

It was extremely well recieved when it aired. Especially amongst fans in the west where toonami would replay Bebop episodes constantly. Checked all the boxes for a good show, looked great, variety of different themes/ideas in every episode and you always got a well animated fight to look foward to.

From what I've heard, it didn't do well when it was airing in Japan and almost got cancelled. They managed to air the remaining episodes later. It blew up in the West shortly afterwards though and became the classic we know today.

I’m not sure on the overall reception at the time (remember social media wasnt like it is now) but I remember watching it on Toonami and was thrilled about it, told some friends about it and they thought it was a good show themselves.

I went to a panel at Otafest in 2019 with the English cast & they said when it was released in Japan it was during their height of school shootings so they only aired the first 12 episodes originally, (I don't remember when they decided to air the remaining). As said before, it blew up in the west & got all 24 episodes smoothly & was an immediate hit.

I know historically that it essentially bombed in Japan, but I remember as a kid in America how it was well loved by everyone I knew.
