Why is this series called "Haruhi Suzumiya"?

Shouldn't it be called "Kyon"? It just feels like his story with the setting/plot related to Haruhi. He is the one who has most character interactions with different characters. Haruhi doesn't get much focus imo. Or does it change later in the series?

Shows like Soul Eater, Komi Can't Communicate, Jibaku Shounen Hanako-Kun, ect are named after characters that aren't the main protagonist because most of the show is about the character the show is named after. Haruhi is about Haruhi being a god and whatnot and without her, there wouldn't be any show whatsoever. The only trait that separates Kyon from a background character is the fact he's the only human in a club full of other species and because Kyon's so boring, it gives you a better perspective of what truly goes on in the SOS Brigade without being super exaggerated.

see what shutired said lol. haruhi wouldn't be haruhi without haruhi. she's the main character—kyon is ultimately a foil for her, even if it's told from his perspective. the other characters are good too, but haruhi gets the most attention as far as writing is concerned throughout the series.

That’s the thing I like about this show Haruhi feels like the main character yet the story is told from someone who is completely unrelated

Revolutionary concept in fiction that’s been around for basically as long as fiction has existed: the POV character and the main character are not the same thing.
Moreover the title of a work doesn’t have to be the main character.

“Moby-Dick” is from the perspective of Ishmael; “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” is from the perspective of Dr. John Watson; “The Lord of the Rings” is from the perspectives of Bilbo, Frodo, Sam (with the other parts of the story being filled in to Sam from others later) and Sauron, the titular character, barely even shows up; and “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” is from the perspective of Kyon.
