Just curious was there a point in the Light Novel, where Hachiman mentioned he was into Buddhism. I just read it on the wiki and got curious on how would it factor in his characterization, since it said he likes it due to it being similar to his ideals (at least his self-deprecating ideals early on), which reminded me on how an edgy teen uses atheism to act smart.

So was it mentioned and does he still believe in it? I haven't read the Ln, I only watched the anime

I am not sure but are not majority or almost all Japanese people are Buddhist? There may be other religions but I don't have any idea about that.

The first biggest religion in japan is shinto, buddhism is the second.

Not quite. There's a close half and half between Shinto and Buddhism in Japan as far as religious people go. Some people practice both.

The vast majority however, is irreligious according to a survey in 2018.

Not really, Hachiman early on in the story used buddhism as a shield to justify his "ways", so he only used it whenever it was convenient, just like what you said about how an edgy teenager would do.

Take note of how early Hachiman is an unreliable narrator, you should notice how despite what he says to himself, his instincts contradict his thoughts.

Whenever he said any of his excuses like his supposed pessimism or in this case his "belief" in Buddhism, like saying he does not desire these things and that he doesn't care for them, he constantly defies this in his actions, attempting to help others in the way he knows he can. And despite his self-sacrificial nature, he still values himself as he attempts to avoid pain from others.

The point is, early on in the story most of what he's saying and what he feels are totally different things

I don't think his actions reflect the teachings of Buddhism at all tbh.

Yeah as someone mentioned he used the ideas as a justification to shield himself. He goes against those teachings by giving into his earthly desires as we know.
Wataru doesn't care about the genuine thing

No majority aren’t religious, Shinto is thought of more as a way of living and only a religion on paper
