This dude was literally losing to every other person at gambling when they introduced him in the first episode. He was shown to suck at it, and even portrayed as kinda dumb in the first episode when he accidentally lets it slip that he's the one who jacked that other dude's car.

Suddenly, only 3-4 episodes into the show this dude is coming up with genius strategies to get out of seemingly unwinnable situations like he's been doing it for years? How the fuck did Kaiji get so good so fast and without reason? Or do we get to find out he's been smart all his life and he just wanted to lose gambles and rack up debts as a hobby
This anime shit is addictive

I think that the whole point of Kaiji is that he isn’t a genius. At first he’s naive and gullible, but not stupid. He doesn’t realise the whole threat and he doesn’t know that he can only trust himself. Later on, especially after almost getting sent to a labour camp, he becomes tougher, but not a lot smarter. Even in the last game, where he actually has a smart idea, he still loses in the end because he isn’t a genius. So no, Kaiji doesn’t get super smart, but he isn’t dumb either, you’re just mistaking naivety for stupidity. Any normal person has a good idea from time to time and I’d say that Kaiji has an above average intelligence. Gambling is all about experience, so that adds to it too.

I think that is for sake of plot to throw kaiji in life or death situation
If they shwed him intelligent he would not play those games.
So yes that was plot armor

Yes this is entirely true but it is an odd trait with in kaiji's gambling habits with him doing better the worse scenario he is in. I think the reason for this is that when more is on the line he analysis every detail, which is why light spoiler here he loses a decent amount of money when allmost nothing is on line in one of the later episodes.

the point is made clear by himself later on , he mentions in the initial arc that it was a game of realization and as he can't come up with all the conclusions he teams up to cover their blind spots as individual in a unit
Kaiji isn't a genius, he is playing with his life on line searching for the openings from keen observation due to desperation and team effort in actual.
