| Just finished reading this manga cause I liked Squid Game and now I wholly regret it. There's a possibility Squid Game might have been inspired by it, yes, but literally the only thing that's the same is the death game synopsis (which isn't unique at all) and two of the same games being played . Otherwise the characters, the set-up of the games, backstories, the messages/themes, etc. are entirely different. A lot of the characters here are batshit crazy people with no sense of morality/sympathy (they're high school students? really?), there's more focus on the games than any of the characters themselves (except maybe the MC), there's a shitty otaku subplot and supernatural elements, etc. Now I haven't read the sequel and I never will, so maybe that one's more similar to Squid Game, but judging from what I've heard, I highly doubt it. |

| I haven't watched either of them but I have seen alot of people jumping on this bandwagon of a gotcha moment towards this show and that anime for whatever reason. Inspiration is being genuinely motivated to tell a similar tale or use it to improve your own work. A rip-off is taking stuff from the work without realizing what made the work so great. So idk ask the creators of the show if they were inspired or not. Who cares in the end. Nothing is entirely original anymore. |
