I turned off the volume when the mother started to sing, it was awful.

After the very questionable 1st episode, the 2nd episode is much better with proper pacing and character buildup.

Should have put this as 1st episode.
The 1st episode is complete mumble jumble with overly fast pacing.

The OP by Burnout syndrome is amazing.

Setsu's mom is not only stylish but her traditional singing talent is mind-blowing. Her seiyuu did a really great job.

This anime is way better than Kono Oto Tomare.

Two bothers playing shamisen in an Inari shrine felt poetic. Fairly surprising, considering how hot-blooded their mother is… Her voice is sublime, though.

Umeko's so crazy & intense.
Both mc with mom and with bro duets were great & hints at their relationship.
Everyone's got such nice designs. Wonder when Setu'll meet his old friends and Yuna.

The piece with his mom was so striking. It was a blast to watch them together.

Man, there are so many cute girls in this show, it's crazy. I really like his childhood "rival", she was spicy.

I think my only disappointment is that this going the school route. I think this would be way more interesting if he was a young adult instead.

This show is so top tier. The performances are emotionally powerful and meaningful. Possible AOTY contender if it keeps up this consistency.

A great episode that was only marred by the intolerably obnoxious Umeko. I really hope going forward that we'll get more shamisen and much, much less Umeko. If Umeko is employed largely as a comic relief then she was a very misplaced choice because she is not funny at all.

(Somehow) having her goons detonate the door hinges of other people's houses to take their door down was not funny either (it could also send all of them to jail but Umeko apparently thinks she is above the law, which is ridiculous; if that was a "comic relief scene" that was not to be taken seriously there was nothing comic or relieving about it). This woman of unspecified age does not act like a mother but like a self-serving spoiled brat, the kind of person I wouldn't want to be in the same room with or I might risk strangling them :p

I hope she is just a plot device used to force Setsu to go to that high school, meet Maeda-chan, perhaps join her shamisen club etc etc, and then the writers forget all about her. I really hope Setsu does not play his shamisen again for Umeko. Ever. Neither casually nor more formally. I wonder why the (manga) creator thought it was a good idea to mar such a beautiful story with such an obnoxious and annoying character.

And here I thought this is an adult anime. Got totally baited by episode 1. Looks like it's gonna be something like kono oto tomare.

Dang, BURNOUT SYNDROMES finally churned out a good OP, supported by the shamisen.

Umeko is such a domineering mother of Setsu's, other than her singing and TV star abilities. That's one of many Joruri pieces of Tsugaru-shamisen traditional music: Tsugaru Ohara Bushi, literally translated: Apple Flower. The impromptu practice as well worth the attention, only if one string didn't break.

Other than that, it's just the usual dark-toned drama for Setsu, spoken in the Tsugaru dialect as always. I don't mind the slow pacing, because this lasts quite a while for music anime, and it's always nice to take things nice and slow (with some brush-in gags for comedy, though it's careful not to overuse them).

Setsu's relationship with his brother Wakana is also getting a lot better, though it'll take some time for both to get along nicely, be it both conversations or playing the shamisen.

I'd swear the Shamisen playing is immersive, no matter the hidden symbolisms within them, much less hearing the surrealism to the ears.

This is getting a lot more better than I've once hoped for, since I'm pretty much a sucker for music shows.
Am I the only one who feels the ED and not the OP?😕

What was even the point of the first episode? All characters from it are gone now and MC even lives in a new place now. Weird story structure.

that was his mom?! she seems like 80% awful mom/20% good/caring mom

otherwise, another great musical episode

a harem is starting. the girl from his hometown that also plays the shamisen. the girl in episode one who let him stay with her. the girl at his new school. and the girl in the shop below his apartment

Man the show f*cked with my expectations
I thought it was a dark drama with very mature characters and a look into the underbelly of the Tokyo light life with music theme, but it turns out to be just a high school musical club.

The duets (mother/Son and 2 Brothers) was amazing. This anime is bringing me closer to this type of music.

Better than the first episode! Wishing they would have led the anime with this episode instead. Still not sure if I like this anime or not but the shamisen and Sawamura Umeko's singing were amazing!
