| THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- Despite being one of the most audacious and silly episodes, I think I enjoyed this episode of El Hazard the most out of the series thus far. Up until this point, there has been no feelings of tension or worry. The sad excuse for villains are just walking, laughing gags that exist to poke fun at their own incompetence, and the heroes can arbitrarily solve any problem by bumbling around. Yet, the show still tries to give this strange illusion of drama whenever something goes wrong, despite the show undermining their drama with even more gags. In this episode, El Hazard finally dropped all pretenses of drama. Nanami and Rune just arbitrarily walk out of prison and befriend the Bugrom and Ifurita, and it's fantastic. I expected some extremely cliche rescue sequence, especially since they're Makoto's...love interests I guess? Regardless, they "break" out and essentially usurp Katsuhiko "rule" in such an offhandedly way that I can't help but give El Hazard credit. Great job at staying true to being a gag series. |
