As of 2/14/2021, This is the last page on MAL https://myanimelist.net/topanime.php?limit=17500
Keep in mind that MAL still does not include all the anime in the database, as I can not find 3 of my watched anime.
MAL also includes Chinese and Korean anime which are lesser known and also count towards the total amount.

For mal database only, there's 17000-18000 like you said but for overall count, Maybe either a bit under 20k or a little bit over 20k?

...and to think I haven't even watched 3% of it in my entire life, my goodness ^.^

I'm not saying there's not A TON of anime, but the total number on MAL is kind of deceptive, since MAL's database is "padded" with things like bonus episodes (additional episodes of a series included on a BD release, or bundled with a manga, for example), and even includes things like anime commercials and music videos.

All of these things get their own entry and count as a separate "anime," even if they're attached to an existing series, or are just a couple minutes long. So even something like this, this, or this count as "1 anime" in the database. MAL also separates seasons that are all part of the same continuing series, so a single show with lots of different seasons, like Sailor Moon or Haikyuu, occupies several entries in the database. If we eliminated the padding, and combined seasons of shows that are direct continuations of previous seasons, the total number of anime in the database would be so much smaller.

There are about 60000 anime, I think?
When I searched https://myanimelist.net/topanime.php?limit=20500, the limit was 20500.
But I clicked one of the newest, and in the end, it showed https://myanimelist.net/anime/51988/Kitsune_Musume_no_Ecchi_na_Oyado
So I think that there are around 60000 anime.
But in Wikipedia, it is claimed that there are 4,4 million anime and 775000 manga.
I guess there will never be an accurate number or even an approximate one.

Do you have a link for where wiki says 4,4 million because that is a ridiculous number and I couldn't find anything remotely implying that on wiki. There's definitely way, way more manga than anime for obvious reasons (production costs etc...) so those numbers you allegedly cited from wiki have to be bullshit.

As for MAL, there's not 60k anime entries. More like 21k. How do I know? Anime.Plus tells me my ~6750 entries are roughly 33% of the entire DB, so if we do the math we end up with ~21k entries on MAL. The ID numbers for entries are already over 50k (which I guess is why you estimated closer to 60k?), but that's because people add so much stuff to the DB that doesn't get accepted or is a double entry that more than half of the ID numbers actually stay empty after the submission has been rejected.
I probably regret this post by now.

here u go, check it by yourself, it said that the number 4,4m is estimated in 2008 which is unbelievable.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MyAnimeList
And yeah, i think the number 20500 is the one but it included hentai too so there's no way to count the exact number of anime unless you subtract all the hentai -_-
The number 60k is kinda wrong as you mentioned, yes, i did notice that when i search for 2,3 which ended up '404'

That 4.4 million number specifically said "entries", so I would assume they mean every web page associated with an anime, which would include individual episode pages as well as character pages, etc.

You can't really go off of the 60k number either, as that is simply an auto-incremented number in their database, which means if an anime was removed for any reason (most likely accidental duplicate or was created wrong and decided to recreate instead of edit), the number would not go back down to reflect that change.

Another way to calculate this is to add up anime from the studios/producers, but you will run into duplicates since many anime are co-produced by multiple studios. Someone on Quora mentioned adding up the numbers from this list and they somehow got 29117 from 4 years ago (I added them up and got 12137), but that list only has 637 companies listed while this list has 2046 companies listed. Like I said though, most anime have multiple companies working on them, so this is not a good way to find the true total. Some anime have 5+ companies listed.

The current number in the top anime list is 21038, which is probably a good estimate, or starting point. It is obviously missing a lot of anime, but it is also bloated with hentai and multiple entries for the same anime since many anime are broken down into seasons, or parts. For instance, #5 of the top anime is Attack on Titan Season 3 Part 2. Movies, OVA, ONA, etc. also bloat this number. For instance, One Piece has over 50 of them, each giving credit toward the total number of anime. This number is basically the upper threshold of the total number of anime.

We can remove the movies, OVA, ONA, etc. bloat by searching specifically the top TV anime. This list has 6106 listings. This still includes seasons/parts of the same anime, but that extra bloat may make up the difference for missing anime titles. Searching this way now removes anime that were only OVA, ONA, or movies, so this is basically the lower threshold of the total number of anime.

To summarize, there are somewhere between 6106 and 21038 anime. I would estimate it is near the median of the those numbers, so about 13572 anime are currently in existence.

While the number of existing anime is finite, it is getting close to infinity.

It cannot reach infinity though, however it can reach the size where it would be impossible for any human to ever watch it all.

It depends a lot how you define "anime". Anidb has a different policy, they aggregate specials with the main TV show, and that makes a difference of over 3000 to MAL already.

- there are foreign ones that don't get to call themselves anime when clearly the style can only be anime
- many make them and don't publish or release them
- number may be too high depending if you count seperate seasons as seperate anime counter on final number or does entire seperate seasons count as 1
- some music videos are considered anime, or are they? depends on general concensus I guess
All these factors and more will never give us accurate or close call number.

My rarest anime on MAL is clocked in at 15'000 and some, so it can't be less than that

Accordingly, there are 12,487 anime being released. This is based on the survey made from this blog post, which you can refer if you interested. This survey excludes Korean and Chinese anime, it also exclude adult-rated anime, I am referring to H-anime, and solely focuses on standard anime. The post is quite interesting, it statistically analyzed the major elements of anime like the distribution of sources, genres, themes, and many more.

It's kinda difficult to count in MAL because older series are 1 complete entrance, (e.g. Naruto / One Piece, etc) while newer series are put into several seasons (multiple entrances, every season you give different rating).. So Naruto you count as 1 series while Hero Academia has 6 series..

@ryo-san That would likely not be possible because the database also includes lost anime. Many anime released before the 1960s are lost.

I have a feeling that if porn takes up 50 percent of the internet, anime probably takes up 25-33 percent
