I really hope for a second season. As it is now the story is clearly incomplete, so many things left unresolved. I enjoyed sports parts and characters are quite interesting but that's not enough to outweigh all the mess it seems to be now.

Oh man, they could ended the anime at the end of match itself if they don't have sequel planned yet. When the match ended I had no idea why the rating plummeted to 7.77. The next 5 minutes gave me the reason why it ended up at 7.75 instead of 7.95.

Why leave with so many cliffhangers and introduce more plot when so many plot points were already hanging by!!

sigh, this is why I avoid MAL discussions but here goes nothing:

People need to understand that this was meant to be a drama with sports as an undertone. So obviously people who watched this as a sports anime are gonna be disappointed and vice versa for drama fans because it might've focused too much on soft tennis.

This is half the show, the other half was trashed near the end of the production which didn't leave any room for the staff to fix this. So that's why it's "unfinished"

Moving on, the episode was fantastic and so was the show as a whole. I don't have a problem with all the drama, because the 12 episodes that it should've gotten were more than enough to resolve these.

The characters were likable asf, the soundtrack was great and the art and animation wasn't flashy but easy on the eyes and consistent.

8/10, someone please save this anime because that cliffhanger was brutal

What really grinds my gears is all the bad ratings/scores the series is getting / going to get, from too many people who don't bother finding out the reason why it is the way it is. Almost all the issues the anime has stems from the fact we basically have half of the story - because of corporate shenanigans. Disgraceful, disgusting, shame.

I mean, you should be mad with them too. You're not gonna praise a half-baked pizza that's served to you because corporate took away the pizzeria's oven while they were still cooking, are you? You're not going to rate the pizza well, and you're gonna be mad that it even came out of the kitchen. That's the normal reaction.

This totally ended without ending. I mean, the match was cool, and they did really well considering who they were playing against. And I'm glad that Mitsue is being true to what she wishes to draw, even if she is losing her followers. New ones are bound to come since her art is amazing. But the thing with Touma? I think it's for the best in the long term, but she didn't need to use those words to hurt him further like that. The thing with Maki? Just what happened to his mother? And to think that he is about to try and kill that man who torments him and his mother so. It's understandable to despair when it seems the pain is going to last forever, and it's just so unfair, but this? He shouldn't need to dirty his hands with that scum. We need more, for the other characters too, there was no closure to be had. At least the director came forward and confirmed that 24 episodes were planned, and that he still wants to finish it somehow.

The show's episode count was cut this Spring after the show had been worked on for 2 years and animation had already begun. It would be even more of a mess if anything had been changed at that point.

If you want a 100% sports anime, then watch Diamond no Ace and Haikyuu. If you're looking for a bit of drama/romance with the sport then I'd highly recommend Major. And of course if you don't mind "super powers" then also check out Kuroko no Baskue

Apparently this anime was supposed to be 24 episodes long but the company decided to cut it off to 12 when it was already too late to get it properly adapted to its new length... so that's why the weird ending. I really hope there's going to be a second season because what a cliffhanger... Things were just starting to get more and more interesting and it's a pity that in the end we got a lot of soft tennis scenes instead of the family drama and other characters' problems getting resolved or better explained. There is a lot of potential in many of the characters and this series bring up topics no other anime does.
I loved it so far but the fact that there's more of it and that we're probably never getting to see it annoys me. I gave it a 10/10 though! (。• ω •。)

It is logical to assume that they can make a 12 episodes length show that has decent quality at the point of spring. If they cannot do it, they didn't and shouldn't change the course. And if they changed the course knowing that they cannot do their job properly, it's also their fault.
Furthermore, at least, they could tweak the last few episodes, but they didn't. It's only the director's selfishness.

The way both the OP song and ED song suddenly cut off half way through was rather unsettling. Almost as if the staff are expressing how they feel about the series' production being cut in half. Anyway, after reading that poorly translated Twitter post from the director, Im still confused as to whether or not we should expect a 2nd season; is did they just decide to delay the second half; or did it just completely get axed...

Most likely a manga or something. I highly doubt a second season will ever be made.
Since sponsors would have some influence for the crucial matters of the contents like the ending of the show, this production incident might be a tricky advertisement for the sequel. XD

When it became apparent that this show was trying to cover the personal lives of several of the characters in just 12 episodes, I realized this was a bridge too far.
And what's with this cliff hanger in the final episode? Sheesh!
This series could easily run 50 eps with all the drama going on in the background.

No because if you do then those with the power to decide will think it's okay to put out unfinished products because people rated it 10/10.

Even still, a half-baked product is never good. If you don't like food analogies, how about a house? "Fantastic architecture with a great view of the city. Comfy and chic looking furnitures. I have my fair share of problems with this show especially with how messy it can get but I won't lie, I did enjoy this show a lot mostly because of Maki and Toma's dynamic even though this show devolved into what it is now. It ends in a cliffhanger which we have no guarantee of ever seeing the rest of it even if the director promises to show us the full narrative. Knowing the anime's current situation, I'll still give them the benefit of the doubt since this is literally half the story.

Stars align was a nice surprise this fall season, i've come to really like sports series, but this mixed it up really well with drama and social issues, the first episode being one of the best first episodes i've ever seen. It's such a shame with what happened with it's development and i sincerely hope that it gets the continuation it deserves.

It was saddening to see it dip in quality, especially in the last episode but I still enjoyed it all the way through, the many complaints people have with it such as it being an unrealistic portrayal of drama are perhaps the silliest thing out of it all, most people and families deal with a myriad of issues, some a lot more severe than others or just different and also, it's fiction trying to discuss these issues with family relations so why wouldn't it feature a lot of dramatic elements. I think it was handled really well, Mitsue and her drawing troubles especially spoke to me. I hope all the characters get their resolutions with their families/issues and get a happy ending, and i hope that on everyone else too.

That's a poor analogy because the show still stands on its own. The ending didn't ruin it, and they can complete it in the future, it makes no sense to judge purely on things that were expected to be resolved, especially in just 12 episodes it would be rushed to hell.

Honestly, anyone who expected this to be centered on sports at the 12th episode after the previous 11 clearly were never centered on it is a simple idiot. This show obviously wanted to convey a message and not just be a silly spokon about stupid sports. If anything, the sports club was a way for these poor kids to bond and develop a relationship, it was never the center of the show.

Anyway, I'm legit really sad that it got axed. I recognize the decision was made because not enough people tuned in to watch it, but boy do I hate that it was canceled this way. Like, at least they could've given Akane a few more episodes to tie at least some of the loose ends and not cut the damn thing in half. That was a silly ass decision on their part.
But Akane wrote on twitter that there are plans to give this a sequel, it's just not certain on which medium. So I think the most obvious pick would be releasing a manga special of sorts, or maybe to greenlit a movie just to at least end Maki's arc and a few others. I'm really not expecting it to be a full second season, but something cheaper like that should be doable. And of course if you care about seeing a conclusion to this show you should watch it on Funimation or on some other legal platform, buy the merch and promote the show.

Sorry. But can you explain how the higher ratings will show people’s satisfaction with the industry’s choice to cut it? If anything, it proves more as to why there needs to be a continuation to the series... Solid high-raving, fan support is what shows the need for anime to continue. I mean, look at this season’s lineup of anime and the rankings: the top 10 are filled at least with half of the series being sequels (ex: SAO, Fate, My Hero Academia). The industry is willing to continue these series because viewer support is solid. I can go onto another whole rant about the actual quality of these continuations, but I won’t, but here’s what I will say: these series are from the past and there is already an over saturation of many of these series’ themes in the anime market. Their support is crucial to the boost of these anime’s sales. With the growth of anime, (starting around 2012ish to 14 when anime series made a breakthrough with some of these themes that are now just being put into sequels), this has been a relatively “new” issue, but the consequences are severe. Creativity, risk, deviation from consumer’s love in anime, and all factors that once made exceptional series has become devalued, and the destructive result is that other anime is left in the dust and unrecognized.

However, we as consumers can change that too, if we actually show our support for series that do play the risk of deviation from the standards of anime.Stars Align has arguably the factors of a unique series compared to what has become common in many anime series. We need to bolster our support in any way possible where the anime industry would listen for Stars Align if we want to push for another season.

Overall I liked the show ... but the serious drama part was so dumb and poorly written (undoubtedly by someone who don't know jack about domestic abuse ... that part was ridiculous, almost insultingly bad (<_<) ) it should have been cut off entirely. :/

I mean ... it was gratuitous everytime: "bwahahaha I am mean bwahaha" ... srsly, what a lazy narrative, not ONE substory was touching, they were all ... written after reading the news ?

Anyway, no need for a second season (why the drama ? Why the petition ?), they don't have enough material/good writer to tell a good story and the sport part is just so-so.

Yep, overall I liked the show but it's dispensable. :/

First of all I want to start this by saying that I am aware of the fact that the director got screwed over by the production committee and he was forced to cut the show in half now then, with that out of the way let's dive into this episode:

1. I appreciate the show not giving the win to the Maki pair, but you're actually trying to tell me that Maki, that started playing tennis for 3 months, was so good that he was able to push the TWIN champions into a mental breakdown they couldn't get out of until they were nearly defeated ? Bullshit. I refuse to believe that the chemistry between the two twins was that fragile, for they have probably played for much longer and have solidified their teamwork for much longer than Maki and Touma. But holy hell is Maki an absolute Mary Sue.

2. The matter of fact is, this show is still incomplete. The are loose ends everywhere and the way they decided to end the show makes 0 sense. Again, I am aware that the show has basically been cut in half, but what was the thought process behind the decision to just roll with that ending ? The ED song also just awkwardly stops because they have to end the show lol. Just so bad. If it DOES get a second season then I'll come back and tweak the score, but until then this does not deserve anything higher than 6/10

Good effort from the staff, i guess.

THIS. You summed up everything I wanted to say. If Maki and Toma won, I would've given this show a 6 or 5. I refuse to believe someone who only started recently would overpower champs. That's utter bullshit.

Also, lots of loose ends, it's hinted that Ryoma and Rintaro look alike and most likely look like their mother but Toma looks different, probably he takes after his dad. Honestly that ending was not satisfying at all and there's no manga to read after.

I started with 8/10 because I had high hopes, the first episode blew me away. The last episode left a bad taste in my mouth and I'm being generous with 7/10.

I don't think these analogies work here, tbh. Or does that mean that any "first season" of any anime is also bad because the story is incomplete? We know the story is not over yet since it was meant to have 20+ episodes.
I DO think, as someone said, that it would have been better ending the episode at the end of the match, but I think it was overall a very good anime.

That's a poor analogy because the show still stands on its own. The ending didn't ruin it, and they can complete it in the future, it makes no sense to judge purely on things that were expected to be resolved, especially in just 12 episodes it would be rushed to hell.

According to you lol. Sure they built up the foundations and it stands but you can't call it a house, not even a hut if there's no roof. I'm not saying the ending ruined it though, I'm saying having no prospect of closure and continuation is what makes it bad.

Those are adaptations though. This is an original. Season twos work for them because there is demand for the source. Originals doesn't have that so when it's cut there is no tangible metric (and by that I mean ¥¥¥) to give as a reason for a continuation.

Also, I don't mean to not cut it but to stop them thinking it's okay for them to put out unfinished products. More of a prevention to show that it's not okay to half ass something.

Generally, first seasons cover arcs and they end with an arc ending. This one didn't feel like an arc ending. And when a story is incomplete generally we have an announcement of a continuation. If we do get one though, I'll be changing my stance, but for now I'm standing on this hill.

Wow all that excitement turned into just that? I really hope that we'll get a season 2 because it's fcked up that they ended Hoshiai no Sora like that.

Overall, it's a good anime that tackled issues that are commonly happening in our society and to all of us.. Though it's disappointing that they weren't given a proper solution. It's like they only added "that certain conflict" to add more drama to make this series look appealing while in reality, it only ruined the potential that this series possess.

What a shame.
I'd give this a higher rating but the ending really bummed me out.

EDIT:
Went to twitter and it seems that Hoshiai no Sora was meant to be 24 episodes (it was written to be 24 episodes) but the second cour got cancelled.....
THAT EXPLAINS A LOT

This anime is perfect case study of wasted potential. It needs a second season to wrap all the things.

It did feel like an arc ending, the classic tournament arc ending.
Everyone in the club has progressed over time and are now a support network of each others.

The cliffhanger with family drama is like an after-credits scene. Beastars did it too, teasing Louis in the next season at the last minute. Kimetsu no Yaiba did it too, teasing the train movie that's coming next. Hoshiai no Sora's diretor already said he intends to continue the story, so the cliffhanger serves as a preview of what's to come.

Wow even 7 was a high score for this needlessly overdramatic show posing as a sports anime.
