The CG kinda threw me off, but what really threw me of was the sound design of the loud noises, which happened all the time in battle. It overpowers every other sound, and kinda pulls me out of it. It's like Youjo Senki's sound design (no surprise, it's the same guy), but amped up.
Other than that, good episode. I loved it when OSTs from the game came up. It made the experience so much better.

Surprisingly, the pacing was actually good, huh. This might not be a bad adaptation after all.

This is going to be hard to get into for anime-onlys, but my biggest concern is how they'll handle

It will not make any sense from the perspective of someone coming in not knowing the story from the previous singularity, in fact, as of right now not even the concept of grand servants has been explored even though it was the most important part in the first 5 singularities.
Releasing Babylonia before Camelot was a mistake.

aLotQuestion_ said:
the humanity last master and servant are so freaking weak in this episode, how are they even completed saving all other singularity?

this must be a joke.

They got help from other servants in the other singularities, obviously.

Am I crazy or did Mash pronounce Fou's name two different ways. First time when they land she says "Fu-san" and during the introduction with Ishtar she says, "Fo-san". Just a minor nitpick lol

Because they weren't good enough, the writing on the first singularities was very lacking, especially the second Singularity, Septem, wich is considered by many players to be the worst chapter in the whole game,

It was only after the America singularity that the writers began to step up their game, since that's when FGO started to become really popular.

They did a survey among the FGO player base and one of the questions was about which singularities they want to see get an anime adaptation. The top 2 vote getters were Babylon and Camelot, thus they are getting anime adaptations.

You will use water for many anime, but will only use this boars on this one.

Japan, and the answer is... Magic.
No, really, it actually is magic.

Definitely a show for the grand order fans.

We had a fair amount of action for a first episode, that's quite nice, and production seems doing good. I feel like more characters/servants gonna be introduced on next episodes. Exciting to see more historical figures as Servants here.

This series is not for everyone. Especially for those who haven't play the game, they will be so damn confused and rely on information from Fate/Grand Order players to fill up those gap.

For anime-only fans, you're lucked out. Play the game or watch the gameplay for the story.
For FGO fans, good luck with doing all of the explaining.

Btw, people need to stop assuming Rin when it's Ishtar because when her double is introduced, they gonna be more confused.

Well, there sure were a lot of ass shots from Mash in this episode... Not that I'm complaining tho.
And also... did just Ishtar knock Gudao out with her butt? xD

Overall, quite impressive first episode. I really liked it.
Regarding production values, the animation was really decent and the CGI didn't look that bad in my opinion. And though he didn't do much this time, I'm finding Gudao a bit more bearable here than in the "First Order" OVA which is nice.
The introductions of Ishtar and especially, Enkidu were quite enjoyable as well. Can't wait to see some interactions between these two, by the way.

That said, I'm really excited to watch this adaptation week by week.

Let me be clear about this: I don't hate the Fate saga, I just find it hard to get me emotionally invested in it because of the massive amounts of lore and content to keep track of. The Fate saga is big on alternate universes, parallel timelines and what-if scenarios, so you'd need an encyclopedia's worth of knowledge to understand what's going on. I watched Fate/Apocrypha and Fate/Extra a few years ago, but they weren't really my cup of tea, so I hope this show can give me a more positive impression of the Fate saga.

I watched the movie and the OVAs, so I do have context of what's going on here, but I don't have the mobile game, which is said to be the source material of the Fate/Grand Order, so it looks like I'm missing a substantial amount of information about the characters and the setting. That's okay, I'm not here to learn about the mythology or the superpowers of the setting. I just came here to watch a good story unfold. I'm a casual fan and I'm just watching this show for the entertainment value.

The production values are nothing short of extraordinary, the fight scenes were exceptionally well-done, the vocal performances were amazing and the characters' movements look fluid and seamless. Still, this show will stand or fall by the strength of its narrative and characters. You can have innovative world-building and interesting concepts all you want, but those things won't matter if you don't have characters to care about, so I really hope Fujimaru and Mash can carry the story all by themselves. All in all, the newest incarnation of the Fate saga is off to a good start and I can't wait to see what happens next.

You may be having some difficulties in getting certain plot details explained in (unadapted) previous chapters of FGO, but you seem to already be keeping that in mind, and yours looks like the right attitude to watch this for an anime only.
So, I hope you can find it entertaining and stick with us until the end.

(if you have any doubt, you can always ask others for clarity, like game players and such. There are some nice ones even on MAL, if I can call myself one lol)

Btw did you watch the "classic" Fate series, other than Apocrypha and Extra? Like UBW, Zero etc? (honest question)

Most opinion from non fgo player or haters:
- Why rin here?
- Why da vinci is female?
- What is grand order?
- What is chaldea?
- Why mc looks bland
- Looks like going to be harem anime?
- etc

Well, dont take seriously. What makes babylon chapter is so loved because its story progression. Early eps is standart singularity prolouge & just tells about world building. But once prolouge estabilished and some eps, you will know why this chapter is loved by fans.

Non fgo player probably need 5-6 eps to enjoy this adaptation because its pace. But as fgo fans, that pace is fine for us and epic scene are one of most thriling anime/manga scene ever I seen.

As for harem, trust me, our main stars in this adaptation mostly are male character such as gil, merlin, & ziusudra

Da Vinci is a man but he altered his saint graph to look like Mona Lisa.
That's not Rin, that's a servant that is using her body in order to be able to manifest as a servant since she can't be summoned normally.
This isn't a isekai, if you wondering. They just time travelled in order to restore the singularity.

Whoever directed this episode is a man/woman of culture.

So.. that was better than expected. It was nice seeing Not Rin kicking some ass animated, and Ritsuka already has more personality than Cardboard-kun Sieg which is good, considering he's a self-insert in the game. So far, so good.

Don't worry while it has some elements of isekai since they went back in time I can assure you it is in no way a harem anime! Unless they somehow magically manage to fuck it up, which I highly dough this is going to be the most epic Fate series yet, at least in scale of the battles and the power level of the enemies. If you haven't played the mobile game just be patient stuff is going to be explained in do time and obviously these boar lion hybrid demonic beasts are not the real enemy of this arc they are just trash mobs.

The first episode is meant for established game players and does nothing to make itself accessible to newcomers, and is the problem in general with fate animes they do not care about being a self-contained show, you are obliged to read their visual novel or video game to understand the context completely, and this is the last straw.
I don't understand why they would start adapting a story from the end, it doesn't matter if it's the best part or the most epic these characters don't matter to me at all. No boy, you have not earned the public, you have not established anything, we do not know context, characters, or motivations, It is like adapting naruto starting with the arc of Pain, however epic that arc, you have not given any context it is simply empty action show and also unintelligible because you do not know how the powers work and try to explain in the middle of the fight only ruins the rhythm and enjoyment of these, but what else does it matter? There you have your waifu beloved Mash will not have any personality, but being cute is enough for them.

I couldn't help but notice the surprising amount of butt shots for both Mash and Ishtar. I applaud whoever in the main staff that decided on this. =3

Anyway, I think I've made the right choice in watching this, even though I'm only in the 3rd singularity in the mobile game so far (and trying to play through it as fast as I can, too.) Cloverworks have job a really nice job with the animation quality so far in this first episode. Action scenes were fluid and the CGI backdrops and ground movements were very good, too.

Ishtar does a great job beating the crap out of the demonic beasts so easily, although I like her interactions with Mash and Ritsuka more, though. =)

So this was a pretty good start overall. Hopefully I can complete this singularity in the game before the anime finishes. ^^;

How can anyone compare Ishtar to Aqua? Ok maybe they have similar personalities but can Aqua nuke entire armies from orbit? Or does she even stand a chance in hand-to-hand against her? And lets not forget Ishtar is nowhere close to her actual power level as a goddess since she is a pseudo-servant in Fate. Aqua is powerfull in her own domains of Water and Healing but she doesn't stand a chance against an actual War goddess like Ishtar.

While I do get your frustration you need to understand that this series is for fans of the game first and foremost. You wouldn't go into Avengers Endgame with the expectation of them recapping all 21 previous movies during the movie would you? About the arcs the thing is that arc 1-5 wouldn't make good adaptations since the story in them was very thin and most missions in game where of the type "go there kill that" repeat about 20x. It would be terrible like the worst Naruto/Bleach filler arcs. The main story really starts picking up in Camelot and Babylonia. That said they should have released the Camelot movie first in my opinion to help newcomers some what. Still don't drop it just yet they will explain most important stuff in do time you just need to be patient...

The animation is pretty good (will CloverWorks be able to keep producing sakuga sequences like these?)

But the first episode hasn't really established a compelling premise. All we know is the protagonist are gonna kill some monsters to restore world order, but there is no indication whether the main characters have any sort of personal stake in it. The characterisation is very thin. Nothing about the main characters is interesting so far, unless you're already a huge fan of the game and you'd be satisfied just to see them animated.

Will give it another episode to see if the characterisation gets better.

much of the characterisation hat you hope to see happens in the previous arc Camelot, which is being adapted into a two-part movie. I'm speaking about Mashu's characterisation, not Ritsuka's. He is an avatar in-game rather than a fleshed-out character, although he has been given some basic sarcastic troll tendencies through conversation choices in-game
