The Boruto: Naruto Next Generations stage at the Jump Festa 2019 event on Sunday has announced that mangaka Masashi Kishimoto will start a new series. Titled Samurai 8: Hachimaruden, the sci-fi manga will be illustrated by Akira Ookubo and begin its serialization in Weekly Shounen Jump magazine in Spring 2019.

Masashi Kishimoto is popular for serializing Naruto franchise, which received anime adaptations. He also released Bench, Karakuri, and Mario one-shots.

Eh Kishi won't be the one drawing it? I like Naruto art style though.
Kickstarter for Rokujouma is fully funded. Good work everyone. Lets wait for the result of our hard work together.

Okubo is a ex assistant of kishi in that case. His art seems pretty good.

Lol so he's going from a ninja manga to a samurai manga. I'll go ahead and check this out when it comes out.

And like the person above me said, this will unfortunately be compared to Naruto constantly.

a little disappointed about the artist since Kishi's action choreography is A+
but if I had to chose between a weekly serialization with different artist and a monthly serialization I'd chose the former, and based on the PV it seems that Kishi is doing the storyboards and not only the script, which is a bit reassuring

If I recall, he once said in an interview that he's physically unable to.

Those are one-shots. Therefore, they are not "series", which means they were not serialized (made into a series).

Well, the assistant's art is pretty similar to Kishi, much better than whatever that is in Boruto manga.

I don't really mind that Kishi won't be drawing, I mean I always liked his art but if he can't draw anymore that's understandable. I'm hyped to read his new story nonetheless!!

ngl, I'm pretty disappointed that Kishimoto won't be drawing it. I hope this is a battle shounen, though, just with sci-fi elements. But it's cool that it's weekly.

Why surprised? his most popular series Naruto has also been a weekly series and ran in the same magazine as this one

Now,i am really happy that kishimoto is doing a separate new series which does not revolve around naruto universe but can it become as popular or as good as naruto? or will his other works will always be overshadowed by naruto?

looking forward to it

Kishimoto not drawing it is fine since he can focus on the story telling part more then (this is what Hunter X Hunter needs)

and its sci-fi too so thats a plus for me since i like that genre

Disappointed that:
- it won't be a monthly work like promised,
- it won't be drawn by him. (although I know from Katsura X Akira that this kind of experience can work)
But I will try it, of course !

Still happy to see him distant himself from Naruto. I hope he succeeds where Toriyama did not.

PS: what happened to the mangaka, making him unable to draw?

====
@Kiriikun No idea either why people are "bitching", since this is not what i did. And, of course, I am aware about the work itself. A short monthly series would have been beneficial to everyone: less deadlines, less need to stretch out indefinitely or filling the void, a demonstration of mastery story-wise since working within duration limitations, etc.

With "drawn", I didn"t mean only the actual outlines of the drawings who'll be read (it's been a long time since I didn't find Kishimoto's drawings appealing/good). I also thought about the layout of the pages and anything else that comes with a comic. "Story" is not the number 1 thing in this kind of production. I'll use Toriyama again as an example: while his own manga show a certain sense for dynamic composition, movement depiction, etc, the DBSuper books are devoid of any talent in that department. Meanwhile, take a look at Katsura X Akira and Katsura actually offers a better rendition than Toyotaro while working on materials delivered by the same person.

Hope this manga doesn't have overpowered power like sharingan, rinnegan, etc that messed up the power level like in Naruto, so side character could shine too..

Super disappointing he isn't drawing it, I thought Naruto artstyle was the best of the Big 3. It'll be better than Boruto for sure, I'll just follow it like how I've been following Fire Force or Edens Zero, simply cause I was a huge fan of their previous work.

Nothing, Kishi said he won’t do a weekly series again a while back but it looks like he found middle ground by making it weekly but having another artist.

Toryiama said he flat out can’t do a manga on his own anymore because he doesn’t have the stamina, he is kind of old.

If you read or watch Bakuman, you should know that Weekly Shonen Jump is best place for him because its sales circulation is still highest in Japan. But maybe because his health condition, It will be hard for him to do both story and art weekly. So for this new series he decide to collaborate with another person and this person is his assistant when he made Naruto. In term of art from what i see, Akira Kubo is far more close to Kishimoto than Ikemoto who draw Boruto. What i concern is Sci-Fi element. Just like Hiro Mashima add sci-fi element to his RPG story in Eden's Zero, Kishimoto also do it despite its Samurai instead of Ninja.

For me its stil good decision. I admit that I really like his art more than his story, but considering his age and maybe his health condition, i don't want this series will be Hiatus x Hiatus 2.0

Looking forward to this. Though hopefully if it becomes a long running series, it won't suffer in the same dip that Naruto did in quality. Maybe the fact that Kishi won't be both drawing and writing this series at the same time might help him not get as burnt out creatively (well that, and i doubt this will go on for aas long as Naruto did lol)? Time will tell.

I can understand why he's not drawing. Drawing Naruto for so long fucking killed his hands so its a good idea to be working with someone.

I like sci-fi, I love robots, and cyborgs, and shit especially if their all fucked up.

Hopefully this series has a lot of that.

I was never into Kishi writing per say and kinda on the meh side of it being similar enough to Naruto in stylistic themes. I'll judge it off it's own merits but I expect since he doesn't have to balance writing and drawing now. And he's matured more as a creator as well.

Shall see.

the mangaka work load is crazy it's a lot easier on him to just focus on the story instead which also gives him free time to chill with his wife and son he gave it to his assistant I don't see why everyone is saying I wish kishi was doing the art I wish ikemoto was working on this for everyone to start bitching

- since the story teller is Kishimoto himself and the artist is his ex-assistant,then it worth to take a look.
- Samurai+Sci-fi... it would be nice, since there're lot of legendary Sword, kenjutsu, and ronin on japan (especially, the legend of 47 ronin). And i think Miyamoto Musashi would appear on this story.
