The official website for the Tokyo Ghoul live-action film has announced that a sequel is in the works. Tentatively titled Tokyo Ghoul 2, the film will premiere in 2019. Shochiku also posted a teaser announcement on its official YouTube channel.

Masataka Kubota will reprise his role as Ken Kaneki and Maika Yamamoto will now cast as Touka Kirishima, replacing Fumika Shimizu. Shouta Matsuda will cast as the film's new character Shuu Tsukiyama.

The first film premiered at the previous Anime Expo on July 3, followed by July 7 and 10 in Berlin and the Marunouchi Piccadilly theater in Chiyoda, Tokyo, respectively; ahead of the wide theatrical release on July 29 last year. Funimation screened the film in US and Canada last October, and released it on a Blu-ray and DVD volume on April 3. The film grossed over 1.1 billion yen.

The psychological horror manga is drawn by Sui Ishida that ran in Young Jump from 2011-2014. The sequel manga, Tokyo Ghoul:re, published in the same magazine between October 2016 and July 2018. Both manga collectively have 37 million copies of their compiled volumes in circulation worldwide.

Studio Pierrot adapted Tokyo Ghoul into two anime series in Summer 2014 and Winter 2015, respectively. An anime adaptation of the sequel manga also aired in Spring 2018, with its second season airing this fall.

Well, the first movie wasn't that bad, at least it was a pretty decent adaptation. I cringed so hard, but it's fine. I'll watch it for sure.
