https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQ3cORhkJSsFVih79zyWhivaALDEz6kcd I found the 2000 version. No subs and a slideshow for some reason... They must've had a really low budget for this one. I would also like to find the 81 special, the screenshots remind me of early Toei animation.

Technically speaking, it should be included in the Ayakashi anthology series. https://myanimelist.net/anime/586/Ayakashi__Japanese_Classic_Horror So don't feel too bad, it's still possible to experience this ghost story.

So I found that it may be impossible to find on the internet but there are several things that I did find about it.

1) https://pt.qwe.wiki/wiki/List_of_animated_feature_films_of_1981 Portuguese wikipedia for all the films made in 1981 list the two creators as Yasuo Ôtsuka and Ryuji Sawada. Yasuo Otsuka is known as one of the big Toei animation directors and at the time in 1981 would have been working on "Chie the Brat" with Isao TAKAHATA, the ghibli director.

On Otsuka's Wikipedia page in the 1981 section, he has 2 bullet points for the films Chie the Brat and Kao Expert Theatre. The film "Anime-ban Toukaidou Yotsuya Kaidan" is nowhere to be found. However, even when I saw the screenshot originally I had a sneaking suspicion that it was a Toei film, just based on the art style alone. We may be looking at a 1981 Toei project, if that is the case but I've found no evidence to support it. It seems undeniable that Yasuo Otsuka was at the very least the main animation director if not the director, but I cannot find any information on MAL or Imdb to support it. It would be very interesting to learn if Takahata has had any involvement in the project as well.

2) On RedditAnimeList several people have rated this movie so I've messaged them all in the hopes they can shed light on how that was even possible. I think perhaps they watched the youtube videos of the 2000 version by Hino Hideshi and thought it was the same thing. Which is this one https://myanimelist.net/anime/17405/Hino_Hideshi_Toukaidou_Yotsuya_Kaidan

I'm going to continue to post here if I find anything else I'm hoping to find if there is any way to possibly experience this and if there is I want to be able to share the anime.

https://www.allcinema.net/cinema/234244 The database for the film is all right here and all of the staff members, it also lists an amazon link for a region 2 disk that doesn't ship internationally, unfortunately. As far as I know, nothing has any answers to how to actually watch this.

Well, never say never because video of the broadcast was found. https://twitter.com/doctoruwatson/status/1029288866283307009 It's a 2-minute clip but I have a feeling this is all you need to watch to get the gist of it. Looks to be half animated and half live-action storytelling. Yasuo Otsuka directed the animated parts and Ichiryu Sadamizu performed the story. It's a part of the Kao Master Theatre which is also known as the Kao Expert Theater mentioned in Otsuka's Wikipedia page. I have to say I think it is incredibly well animated for 1981 and I wouldn't be surprised if the Toei production company was apart of many of the animated sequences. If anyone wants to go down the rabbit hole further they can, but I'm satisfied for the most part. I didn't find the whole 45-minute broadcast but I did learn more about a man who was extremely influencial in shaping the careers of both Miyazaki and Takahata.

If I do happen to find it I will post the link here but I probably won't get any closer to the answer unfortunately.

Thanks for the clip, that looks amazing, hope the entire thing can be unearthed at some point. Also I think you might have quoted the wrong post.
