Got to episode 9 but thought it was garbage. Does it get any better?

For some reason this has a high rating from the community.

Why do people like this so much?

I finished episode 9 but have put off watching it for now because I thought it was so bad.

Does it improve any?

Your are getting to the good parts. Continue this arc. If you did not like this arc, then skip it. There is another final arc, where you will know tatsuya is called a 'god'. He is solo OP in that one.

But he's boring, he's sooo boring. Does he become more interesting as a character? Like, one punch man is both OP and interesting, interesting because he has desires, goals, obstacles. Kurogane Ikki is interesting and OP, he too has strong desires and obstacles put in his way, he needs to reform the system and show the world that even non-magic users can do great things. Etc.

This guy Tatsuya is just a boring character so far, I have no idea what his motivations are, there's no character depth, he seems to have nothing that can stop him getting what he wants (maybe because he doesn't have anything he wants.)

Does it get better?

If you asking for emotion forget it. You heard him in EP 9 right(the end). He doesn't feel anything. Like anything. If you like people like OPM then no. He suffered like ikki more than him actually, but no he cannot have any emotion. The anime skips most of his family problems.

If you watched 9 episodes and just aren't feeling it, then I don't see that changing. I doubt anything about the show itself will significantly alter your opinion in future episodes. The arc you're just now starting is the best (and longest) of the 3.

I'd recommend reading the LN if your looking for more depth and characterisation with the characters, a more detailed look at the magic system and world building, and overall better flow with the story.

If you don't like it through 9 episodes, you just won't like it overall. The mahouka anime is pretty polarizing, you either really like it or you really dislike it with a small grey area in between.
