Good and realistic ending sadly Mari/Yori didn't ended as a couple. At first I thought that Yori was some kind of obsessive stalker hehehe. I saw that ending coming since chapter 30-40. Was clear to me that Mari had some mental disorder and Komori was inside her head (thankfully was not some paranormal bs). 7/10 same level of Aku no Hana. Next: Happiness.

Started great but never became as good as it started that I was looking forward to. Yori's constantly screaming or her self-centered character was disturbing to read through on the later chapters.. but at least comparatively better ending than Akh anyway I think this would been much better if it could been shorter imo.

So, all of the chemistry that Yori and Mari/Isao had is gone now? It seems like it was implied that they'd eventually part ways. Sad, but it kinda makes sense considering the Isao construct that Yori fell in love with doesn't exist, and that the Mari she admired was also a facade in a way. There were so many layers to this.

Very compelling.

Chapter: 5/5
Overall: 8/10

I have just finished this manga and I loved it, I can understand that having to wait to read each chapter makes it lose some points because it's a very graphic manga with many moments in which "nothing happens".

As many say, it was obvious that something was wrong with Mari's head since mid manga, and in my opinion there were excessive clues about what it's happening that make it lose its intrigue, but I found fine that it's all explained and that the story is closed at the end.

On the other hand, the one month timelapse of the last chapters is weird and meaningless, and the way Yori met her friends and how her relationship with Isao/Mari's cooled off seemed rushed.

From what I understood, Mari appears to have been hiding her lesbianism because her idol personality can't accept it, so Isao/Mari is an open door to her real feelings. Maybe it's like Arbean26 said, although Yori told her sister that she loved Isao/Mari, she liked Mari due to their encounter in the nursing when she had problems, however, she loved Isao/Mari because the good time they spent together (also she's afraid that if Isao/Mari dissapears, Mari's body will become an empty shell again). When the three personalities inside Mari's body coincide, Mari told Isao/Mari that she knows that Yori doesn't really love her and in the end Yori will probably leave her after they graduated, so she decides to start a relationship as friends.

Finally, Mari personality stays as the dominant but complemented by Isao and Fumiko, so she smiles when she doesn't see anybody when she looks back at the end because she's now feeling complete.

I did not expect this kind of story when I started reading it, wishing to read other works by this author.

Waw... I just started to read this because it has gender bender in it. But, waw ! The story is way more complex than i thought. I boost to read it in just 2 days, and now my head is still a little bit hurt.

The story is really drown my mind, it just like every time i switch chapter, there's always "why it can be ?" "How would just happen ?" bla bla bla.

I actually still confused with "what actually happen with mari". But, IMO, i think it just like Multiple Personality, right ? The Isao's personality might be developed after she saw the real Isao, the guy that she consider "The lucky person". It might be started from past conflict trauma between her and her mother, especially after change her name from fumiko to mari. Yeah, that just my opinion though.

Score ? I actually want to give it 8. But, the final chapter is actually show too fast. So sorry, i will drop it a little bit to 7/10

Ahh, now please let me go for a head compress and a nice pillow...

Yeah, all the clues point to her having multiple personality.

Like you, I started to read it because the gender bender and didn't expected how it evolved. It's one of these mangas where you want to know what happens next and it's also very quick to read so it's easy to miss some details, I found later this site:

This series started out so good I couldn't stop reading and then about half way through it looses steam and gets boring. The characters aren't very likable or interesting but at least the ending gives some closure. Overall this manga starts out a 9 and ends a 5 for me, shame as this series had such an interesting premise. For those interested the mangaka has a new series called Chi no Wadachi which like this series has a very interesting premise that reels you in, hopefully it actually delivers.

Did the real Isao Komori stay friends with Mari and Yori? I mean god without him none of this would have happened and Komori's own sadness is that he doesn't have any friends. So by the end of the manga I know we get a showing of him helping out his parents and Mari and Yori joking about him. But does that mean that there friends?

Btw... does anyone know of another *great* manga (or anime, though that's probably less-likely) that's very-similar to this?

I.e. a great, deconstructive body swap story with mental illness elements, esp. if the mental illness is hinted at but not truly revealed until late in the series. Particularly if the story *doesn't let on quite as "early" as this series* that "It may really just be a case of DID or MPD."

It kind-of seems, from what I can tell, that Inside Mari is an "outlier" (or, rather, one of a kind) within the body swap genre :(

Just finished reading after 3 days-in-row... God i had to say myself, no, don't read it too fast, let's get this for some time! Unfortunately there's no hope for human being like me. I came to this manga during of waiting for new part of "Chi no Wadachi" which is from the pen of the very same Oshimi, Shuuzou. When i started to read it i was kinda disappointed a bit, because i am not so much in to gender transformation. More likely i am in to some romance scenes where is a girl with a boy. Unfortunately for me, the first scene i saw was that kinda lesbian in nurse room. And there's a still question by me, was Mari lesbian/bi or there was just in role another kind of personality as her imagined Isao Komori? Or it was her true personality? The end was kinda speeded and compared with many other chapters it was a bit disappointing.

But honestly i am not experienced with manga and mainly what i was focusd most likely was ecchi genre, but that as masterpiece and for me one of the most amazing experiences ever. Love it so much

My signature is coppied from another forum, because currently i don't have nothing better

I read through this pretty quick as some of the others here because I got sucked into the story and needed to see what happened next.
I liked this overall although the ending with Yori was a bit of a bummer. On the other hand it seemed that Mari had made amends with herself and could move on to a full life. One thing at the end kinda threw and that was Mari saying she wasn't going to college because she wasn't as good a student as Yori. I thought Mari was some sort of straight A student.

On a related a note I found a live action series of this on Dailymotion which thankfully had English subtitles. Haven't finished that yet. I also saw the tropes list explaining the series and that helped me with some things as well.

The theme of gender swapping is interesting in of itself. Yet I was constantly looking to see Komori 'return'. Yet I've finally realized that it was just all in her mind. I'm going to assume the first chapters were here imagining that is what Komori would think, because he said he never really knew who she was, which means he never stalked. It was just her. It was interesting to see her 'seem' like she was a male discovering things a female had to get accustomed to. I wasn't really that interested in much of the characters, and mainly cared for the plot.

In the end I can't really relate with Fumiko, so I think I was simply hoping that Yori would grow to like Komori. I feel that would make us all like her, which would show that she developed as a character. There were at times that I thought 'if I were her, I'd tell her to shut up and just go away'. I don't know. I feel like she was too mean to Komori, who had the seemingly bad luck of getting swapped into such a situation.

I was confused at first because I thought Komori may have found his true home, but in reality it wasn't Komori at all, it was Fumiko. I only realized this after reading Chapter 77 and Chapter 78. It shows her stalking Komori, and then the truth of 'him not being real'. That confused me a ton because I was still thinking those were 'souls' instead of just parts of her own psche. I was like 'what the eff... we'll go together?' Then the dissociation disorder made that make much more sense. She was someone entirely different from who I thought she was. That is all.

Eh, it was interesting. I'll give it a 7. Honestly I would give Yori a chance only if she lightened up.

Liked the overall eerie, what-the-fuck-is-going-on feel of the manga but I somehow knew the twist past halfway through the chapters and was just eagerly reading the rest to confirm what I had on my mind. The story was really well-written but it could have cut a lot of stuff and it would just still make sense. I don't like how there's little to no content on some of the chapters wherein it literally cover one conversation between Mari and someone else and that's it. I think this would really go well if adapted as a live-action movie though.

Still it was definitely a good read and I look forward to more psychological thrillers from the same mangaka.

For a manga that presents itself as a gender-bender genre this becamed a thrilling mystery as such that i couldn't stop reading fast. But my problem, such as much people that commented here, is not soo much as the ending itself, but also the non body swap revelation. Not that i'm against Mari recovering her true self, but in the fact that who in the end who is really Mari?
Yes i know Mari had the three personalities (herself Mari, Mari/Komori and Fumiko her younger self).
From the point were the supernatural body swap is thrown out we knew that in the end Mari had to come back. In the process we lost the connection between Yori and Mari/Komori that was all we knew and cared.
We readers who first where subconsciously rooting for Komori to bring back Mari to her own body, then for Mari/Komori to reconcile with Yori and finally for Mari to come back by uncovering her past self, Fumiko. We are left with a feeling of emptiness because we end up knowing little about the real Mari and not giving any credit to Yori, if not even disliking her. Not to mention Komori that actually didn't knew Mari until she came to him claiming that she was him.
It was a good story, but as many good stories do, they end. And this one ended as we knew it would but with a bittersweet feeling.
Thanks for reading this and sorry for my Engrish :D

The last chapters and ending were so disappointing. As many have already said, I felt an empty sort of feeling at the end. I started reading this manga on the assumption that the manga was focused on Komori, not Mari. And in the end the opposite has proven true. THAT was the thing i didn't like. I expected Komori to be the main character and I was looking forward to see his development. Also, I really don't like Yori as a character. She was simply annoying, from beginning to end, and she was worthless on the outcome of the story. Anyway it wasn't so bad, I'd give it a 7/10, overall.

You know, on second thought I think I don't really like this manga at all. I don't give a damn about Mari's mental illnes, why would I relate to something like that? If the author made clear from the start that the premises were these, I wouldn't even wasted my time reading this story. Also fuck Yori, she was obnoxious from beginning to end, one of the most annoying character I ever seen in a manga.

Overall a 5/10.

Seems like a lot of people here don't know what Dissociative Identity Disorder is, how it's caused, and how to recognize it. This was a great manga, to me. Even after the ending, I still felt a emptiness and sadness inside. I hope she found happiness.

For anyone confused, Komori was never the one stalking Mari. In fact, Komori had no idea who she even was. Mari was the one who was actually stalking him, and following him to his apartment and spying on him. She even broke into his apartment. She desired his way of life, and because of her illness, manifested her own persona of him. Mari didn't love Yori, the Komori persona in Mari loved her, and that's the persona that Yori loved. That's why they didn't end up as "lovers".

This was 9/10 for me. I've loved all of Oshimi Shuzo manga that I've read so far.

So in the end it's not a body swap phenomenon, the problem is with Mari's personality....it's a shame that the manga doesn't dig deeper into this or give a straight final answer to the cause...

The "Fumiko" thing is not as impactful as I thought it would....

I also hated how Yori played more role in the end of the story than Komori...

Well, in the end they all move on with their own life, good enough for me....

Jesus.... this gaves me so much nightmare fuel. It made you question your idea of self, your self image, your consciousness, your reality and your perception of the world around you and how the world sees you. This is the kind of work that evokes disturbing question to yourself.... one that gives you existential crisis.

Downright haunting. I can tell that this is one of those works I will come back to again. It probably gets better every time you read it. Notice something new, develop a new theory.

What was up with all the foreshadowing of the male classmate that always said "Good morning" and got ignored? I thought it would've gone somewhere.

Anyways, as other people have said, reading this too fast loses a bit of the thrill of the mystery, still I enjoyed it.

What. a. TRIP. I started reading this on a whim because of the unique premise (body swap gone existential) and finished it in one sitting. I had kind of a difficult time understanding the ending and stumbled upon this blog post that does a good job explaining the gist of it. The juxtaposition of the pathetically useless Isao squandering what life has given him with the beautifully tortured Mari fighting to work through her mental illness and childhood abuse, even though her entire world and identity are crumbling around her, is like a punch to the liver for underachievers.

Even after reading different analyses, it still leaves you with more questions than answers. It's hard not to interpret this story as a kind of "lesbian accepts herself" tale. The female "love interest" Kakiguchi Yori's name even sounds like "yuri," which is something I almost immediately noticed. There's also the scene early on where Mari squeezes Momoka's ass when they embrace, a type of boundary crossing that a young, budding lesbian might unknowingly engage in. You even have the preoccupation with typically hetero male things (video games, porno mags, hamburger steaks), since lesbians are sometimes stereotyped as men in women's bodies. There's also two scenes in the manga that really drive this one home for me: Hiroki forcing Mari to kiss him (you'll notice Mari doesn't want to invite him in; it is only at the behest of her mother that she gives in) and Mari giving Isao the handjob. I think both are there to support her nonexistent attraction to men.

I got a bunch of other thoughts, but I'm just rambling now... greetings in advance to any future posters.

I assume that Mari has some kind of personality disorder, at least I interpret it that way that she has 2 personalities Mari and Komori, which makes the most sense in my opinion. Unfortunately the ending was quite rushed, I don't even think it's bad that too many questions were left open, that leaves room for speculation, but it could have been rounded off more nicely. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it very much.

This was a pretty interesting manga, and probably the first psychological type like this that I've ever read, as I generally avoid these types of things, but something made me want to read it.

Overall, the ending wasn't bad, but it's sad that Mari and Yori didn't end up together, and only stayed friends. It seems that all high school romances in Japan come to an end once people graduate, which is kinda cruel.

If we had hints that Mari could be suffering from a personality disorder from the beginning, this ending would certainly be more satisfying, but you can tell that this was an idea that Oshimi had after he had already started the manga.

This was solid as fuck. It's not his best work, but the relationship between Yori and Isao is extremely compelling, and the exploration of identity throughout is really engaging. The ending also shines a light on how ridiculous the concept of a body swap is, too, and while I saw it coming, it was still worthwhile. I think the ending managed to shift the focus of the material upon re-reading it to how "Mari" is just a persona that has been crafted for the character not only in name, but in the oppressive actions of everyone around her.

Her friends control and belittle her, her mother controls and neglects her simultaneously, and her ideal life is that of Komori, who, while pathetic on the surface, at least has the luxury of choice, which Mari never had. It's unique and interesting, however, one of my problems with this twist is that it renders the exploration of the connection between one's identity and physical body pretty void when it becomes a matter of dissociative identity. I also think the way in which Yori figures out that Mari has "changed bodies" is extremely contrived, and very presumptive of her. I mean, it's a strange conclusion for a girl to hear a new word in somebody's vocabulary and quite literally take it to mean that her body is being occupied by an intruder. I get it, it speaks to her wealth of knowledge as a secret admirer of Mari, but the conclusion she arrives at is hardly sensible, and it feels a bit rushed, and as though Oshimi couldn't figure out a way to establish the Komori/ Yori bond naturally and/or soon enough into the story.

Besides those complaints - this thing is a fantastic read. 8/10

all the past commenters who whined in this thread about how the story is about Mari and not Komori are telling on themselves so hard lmao. so SO dreadfully sorry that this wasn’t your wish fulfillment fantasy where a hopeless loser transforms into a cute girl with a perfect life.

instead it’s about how the cute girl (Mari) is actually fucking broken and needs to heal from the trauma of having a fake-ass life with shitty friends and an abusive mom (who herself was suffering from her dipshit doormat of a husband), instead of stalking the man whose supposedly perfect life she pines after so badly, and then having a complete mental break when she finds out his life isn’t so perfect after all, because it doesn’t fit HER wish fulfillment fantasy.

it’s about how the hopeless loser (Komori) isn’t really all that hopeless or a loser after all, he’s just a square peg in a round hole, and he needs to quit lying to himself about his current situation, go home, reconnect with his family who actually cares about him, and live a simpler and more humble lifestyle instead of chasing after one that isn’t working out for him.

and it’s about how an obsessive stalker (Yori) doesn’t get to win the heart of the girl she’s stalking in the end, and instead of pedestaling the object of her affections, needs to realign her expectations to something more realistic, more human, more healthy, FAR more fulfilling, and—most importantly—actually mutually reciprocated.

could the ending have been executed better? sure. maybe if the last chapter didn’t feel so rushed. but the content of the ending itself is flawless. not a single character gets the ending they WANT. but, unquestionably, all three of them get the ending they NEED. and all of them will be so much better for it.
