THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
I had thought this was going to be good from watching the trailer - but wow, it beat my expectations! I'm so happy to see the characters come to life, it was animated beautifully. Makes me want to re-read the manga. The scene in the sandbox was my favourite, but the ending was really sweet too.

SO
FUCKING
CUTE

I am so glad Doukyuusei finally received the adaptation it deserves

Personally I do not like A-1 pictures that much but there are times where they truly manage to pull it off and this is without a doubt one of them

I'm not sure if it's because of Hiroshi Kamiya's (<3) and Kenji Nojima's sweet, sweet voice acting or Shouko Nakamura's (who, by the way, also was the chief director for one of my favorite anime, Mawaru Penguindrum) excellent directing but I actually found myself enjoying the anime more than the manga

Hopefully this'll make people realize that BL actually is a pretty diverse genre and that it's not just all about gay porn shit for horny teenagers/middle aged women cough cough Junjou Romantica cough cough

Last but not least I hope A-1 decides to adapt the sequels as well and that Asumiko Nakamura eventually will earn the recognition she deserves

Final verdict: Strong 8/10 10/10 for the love scenes

The manga series was the first BL I noticed years ago it was actually good, not some guilty pleasure abusive crap.

The movie was pretty great and I wish to buy an official version to support future adaptations of actual good BL.
My only problem with it was that they took off a chapter that was quite important for Sajou's characterization, as why he's in that school and his anxiety attacks. And more characterization for Hara-sensei etc.

I feel sad for those who are starting BL with Doukyuusei, because everything after it will be terribly bad. This movie is basically the only legit good BL animated so far.
There's tons of good BL manga around, but these sell far less than shit like Ten Count (which probably will get an adaptation in the future)

LKMalika said:

Around 5 out 6 chapters were animated but that's just the first book, and the sequels are shown in the manga's page, here on MAL.
If I'm not mistaken, there's around 6 volumes with their story plus some other characters. It's kind of confusing since they all have different titles, but every info on MAL's database seems pretty correct.

Yeah, this is the only major complaint I have about this movie, I think they should've shown more of Hara and Sajou's past

This movie was so cute ;0; the romance made my heart melt!

The animation was unique but really cute. I really loved the way the characters moved, it was really flowy and nice! It's really nice to see a shounen ai movie without any sex scenes, too.

Polished art and animation, as per usual with A-1 Pictures. Hiroshi Kamiya, Kenji Nojima, and the rest of the cast matched their parts perfectly, and the atmosphere was refreshingly subtle. It wasn't gaudy, exploitative, or rapey like the typical shounen-ai.

The first kiss between Kusakabe and Sajou played out much better than I thought it would. I liked that it looked more intentional rather than accidental. The love confession and second kiss were a little awkward. The transition would have been smoother if they had said more about their first kiss beforehand.

It was satisfying to see the difficulties of being in a closeted relationship. This may be the first time I've seen this done in a convincing way in a shounen-ai. I'm not sure how I feel about Hara coming on to Sajou. That scene came out of no where, but whatever—it's an anime.

Lol @ Kusakabe recording Sajou's gasp in his heart. Lmfao @ Kusakabe bluntly asking Hara about how guys do it.

Very nice movie overall. Doukyuusei is a good Aoi Hana companion piece.

Being this my first shounen-ai series, I’ll say this was pretty good. I thought the main character relationship was well portrayed.

Overall: 8/10
OST and art-style/direction: 10/10 (main reason I decided to watch this. I'm glad I did though)

but, sadly, this was a case where u had to know the manga story to understand more about sensei and his feelings/actions towards sajou. i think they should have cut those parts about sensei out of the Movie if they weren't going to elaborate. i recommend the manga series. they go much further and i really enjoy them.

Yes, yes, yessss! The first good anime adaptation of a BL manga is the one that pulled me into the genre years ago, I cannot be any happier today. I was shaking in happiness while watching the movie.

It was PERFECT. The atmosphere, the voices, the music, the interactions and conversations... I could feel the tension when Kusakabe threw down the water bottle and all the other little scenes - the hot springs conversation, the concert, were given so much life. Kusakabe's honest and slightly blunt personality shined through wonderfully thanks to a wonderful job by my favorite seiyuu Kamiya Hiroshi. And the kisses omg.

Ofc the movie ended on a bit of a vague note and, but Sotsugyousei (sequel) really solidifies their relationship and takes it to the next step. I have my fingers crossed for that to get adapted as well, though they actually do the deed at the end of that one so I'm not sure how they would handle it. It's a pretty important development so I would hate to see it cut out. (Albeit I think it wasn't explicit in the manga.) I barely noticed that they skipped the chapter about Sajou's anxiety issues (thus he gets sick on trains) and his relationship with Hara-sen. But that's okay. Would've been great if they adapted that though - and I think they could've if they extended the film by maybe 10-15 minutes. Strange they decided to cut it out since the actual film is on the short side for a movie anyway.

All in all, fucking fantastic. I would love to see more of Nakamura-sensei's works adapted or at least more sweet shounen-ai series coming out. They can cut back on the molesty stuff and appeal to some of the fujoshi market with content less susceptible to censorship. They're missing out on (my) $$$!

BEAUTIFUL. I was hyped after seeing the PVs and this just...I loved it. I have read the manga over and over because I love the art and story. I wondered how it would look animated because of the art style but I loved every aspect (color palette, direction, style, music, EVERYTHING!!!)! I am so happy with the way it was translated to animation! So beautiful!!!

The seiyuu!!! I love both seiyuu so much already! I love Kamiya-san so much - his voice is beautiful, I love his singing and acting. I was so happy when I he got this role! Nojima-san omg!!! I loved him so much as Ginoza in the Psycho-Pass series (please, Anime Gods, let there be a prequel to s1 when Sasayama is still alive & Kou is still an Inspector!!!). I am in awe of his performance as Sajou. He truly captured this character with his voice. I feel like both of these roles were very demanding and both seiyuu created something really beautiful that was true to the characters. Perfect casting!!! Beautiful performances!!! I want to rewatch this over and over - will be getting the Blu-ray without a doubt!

10/10. And yes, I know I said "beautiful" over and over but whatever...this is worthy of me "omg beautiful-ing!!!" all over it. LOVE!!!

As expected this movie was absolutely beautiful and sweet. It made my chest feel heavy a few times though. It was enjoyable nonetheless. Characters gradually fell in love with each other, went through ups and downs but it never felt forced. Not one bit. This is how you make a good romance story. Wish there was more BL anime like this.

That was sooo cute. This is the type of BL I like, cute, light drama, and overall, relaxing. I also couldn't stop smiling, it was wonderful watching the two's relationship. I love how there was no misunderstanding when Kusakabe saw Hara-sensei making a move on Sajou, but instead, immediately went to hit Hara-sensei and took Sajou away. I clapped my hands at that part.

I think the spending time apart was a good decision, because it's hard to talk rationally when you're too emotional, and both of them were at the time. It turned out for the better, as they both were able to calm down and realize that they wanted to see each other. The yellow ribbon part was so cute. Kusakabe has such a good outlook (even though it didn't actually happen), that even if you cut it, you can tie it up again. It might not be the same, but it's also more interesting that way. Things don't have to be the same to be good. I really like stories that focuses on relationship(s), and I think Doukyuusei did really well in that.

The chapter that apparently was skipped (haven't read the manga) sounds like it could've fit in the movie, I mean 1 hour is a bit short when it comes to movies. Standard is usually around 1.5 hour? But I think I can also understand why they chose not to incorporate it in, aside from maybe budget constraint. They might've just wanted to make the movie as simple as possible. I mean even without the two characters being fleshed out, we were still able to understand who they were as people. And without the knowledge of either character's backgrounds, the audience is basically on the same level as the characters. What we know about them is what we see.

I appreciate how much silence there was in the background, and when needed, soft guitar pieces came in. It really contributed to the overall calmness of the movie. Also the watercolors and light color palette! I couldn't stop marveling at the backgrounds. As for the directing choices such as using panels, I actually liked that, it made the film feel a bit more artistic I guess :)

Overall, I really enjoyed this. It's the type where you just feel very good afterwards.

I'm still surprised at how much non-garbage A-1 is when they animate SoLs.
I can vaguely remember not liking this manga but this was a good watch, not sure why they would skip anything though.

The voice acting was fantastic but dang Kamiyan blew me away more than he usually already does.
I don't know if it's because I haven't really heard him in a while or what but he sounded so good here.

So heartwarming, best CV, perfect art, fitting background and great ending. I hope we get a sequel cuz the movie sales is impressive. I thought Shungiku sensei BL is the only one that sales great, this movie sold more than Junjou romantica season 1 Vol, 1

That's why I love A-1 picture, they always make my heart feels good. Hope the sequels of the manga get animated. I should read the sequels as well. Will read the Doukyuusei as well since some of you are saying that some parts got skipped. <3

i really enjoyed watching this. it has a quit, relaxing and fun feeling to it. it was interesting to see everything painted in watercolors.
(i couldn't remember half the plot even though i read the manga in may xD)

+ the panel style of the transitions
+ i quite liked they went through the move during the seasons. it always showed plants or scenery but it felt much more natural than other series/films where you see someone go to bed or wake up. they just started with the parts where an interaction takes place.

- not adding a line (e.g. as thought process) that explains that Sajou had anxiety problems before (the whole manga chapter wouldn't be necessary. i think it would destroy the flow.)
- moving mouths from afar without eyes o.O (i didn't have a problem with them not having distinct features. it kinda made you look at the protagonists more.)
